$16 Million - Move On
- City of Chicago lawyers have reached a proposed $16 million settlement with the family of the innocent bystander shot dead by an officer who fired at a teenager carrying a baseball bat in December 2015, according to multiple sources with knowledge of the agreement.
The tentative settlement with the family of 55-year-old Bettie Jones emerged late last week with the lawsuit’s trial date looming at the Daley Center courthouse. The city is still scheduled to go to trial this week with the survivors of 19-year-old Quintonio LeGrier, who approached officers with a baseball bat as they responded to a domestic disturbance. Officer Robert Rialmo fired, hitting LeGrier and accidentally striking Jones, killing both.
The settlement is among the largest ever for a shooting by Chicago police, though the circumstances — a churchgoing grandmother killed by a bullet intended for another — have little comparison in city history. The proposed deal, which will require City Council approval, is the latest in a string of multimillion-dollar payouts by the city in lawsuits alleging police misconduct or excessive force.
Not comparable assholes. There has been no finding of misconduct or excessive force in the death of Jones - it was a tragic outcome. Wrong place, wrong time, and while that does not diminish the loss suffered, neither should it be license to slander the police due to the accidental nature of her death. No one intended for Jones to be injured or killed, but she was placed in that doorway by a family unable to deal with the hellspawn they created via years of abuse, neglect, apathy and indifference.
We can disagree about the payout - high, low, correct, whatever. But removing Jones from the equation should allow the City to better defend the legal and proper actions of the Officer when confronted by a bat wielding assailant.

Keep paying out-- the circus continues. $16 million is the new standard it looks like
Rahm shouldn’t have closed the mental health centers. He created and made this problem worse.
Don’t approve it . Vote out every alderman that votes to approve it .
Now a sex offender working for CPS was able to resign before investigation was completed .
Parents weren’t notified , this was done to protect tutu Tiny dancer 💃
No crocodile tears will save this clown .
16 million dollars.
All the people on her block combined, when she got shot that day, will not in their lifetime earn 16 million dollars.
The bullet that hit her went through the intended target.
It was a tragic accident.
250,000.00 and funeral expences would be generous.
Who are her estates attorneys and what are their connection to city hall ?
A lot of money, but it is going to the poor and not into some politician's pocket.
And had the Asshole Lived, he would have been charged with Jone's murder. I would have paid a cent. But that's just me
As tragic as this may be, the officer did nothing wrong and Quintonio was the cause of her death. I can stomach a payout of a couple million if need be, but this is beyond excessive. Taxpayers are once again on the hook for one's criminal actions. This is nothing more than campaign financing paid by taxpayers in order to gain the votes of the black voting block. Once again, a tragic occurrence, however, taxpayers should not be held accountable for Quintonio's actions.
We can disagree about the payout - high, low, correct, whatever. But removing Jones from the equation should allow the City to better defend the legal and proper actions of the Officer when confronted by a bat wielding assailant.

Oddly enough, all other savage city media sources continue to report that he was just "holding" the bat when he was gunned down by the white Policeman...
I love how they describe it as an exuberant youth carrying a bat. That is why no one trusts the media. The over the top media bias is beyond obvious. I can't wait to leave this state, let the animals have it. But when all the working tax payers leave who will support the non working class?
Why doesn't the city appeal these outrageous amounts I can see maybe $4 Million tops?
I can see giving the family a settlement, but the amount is excessive. Can't see the article, looks like the Slum Times is behind a paywall now like the Tribune. Won't pay to read either of those rags.
Not to worry. 16 million = the lawyers will get 10 nillion. The family will argue about and piss thru the remaining 6 million in less than two years and be right back where they started.
"A lot of money, but it is going to the poor and not into some politician's pocket."
Oh you naive stupid little boy
Why doesn't the city appeal these outrageous amounts I can see maybe $4 Million tops?
Because that would cut down the amount kicked back to the politicians. Bribery is Illegal So now it's called campaign contributions, lobbying, and TIF funds Wake the F up people
The city lawyers are following Rahm's pandering orders.
How the hell they arrive with these amounts?
If an officer ends up accidentally shooting and killing a neuro-surgeon, how much is that gonna cost taxpayers?
$100,000,000?
Another excessive pay out, the mayor is just trying to buy votes from the black community spending millions in taxpayer money, and payouts that should not be made! This is a tragic circumstance the mayor should make a payout out of his campaign funds. The mayor closed multiple mental health centers it is totally his negligence that is causing all these mentals to lose their minds without proper care. He does whatever he wants he closed over 54 public schools, now he is spending billions building brand new public schools in many areas, where the capacity has diminished due to people fleeing the city.
Then we have the sexual assault scandals throughout the Chicago public school system, why are some of the predators allowed to retire get their pensions and not be prosecuted? What kind of bullshit is this? But then again the mayor wants the votes of the Chicago teachers union which is very liberal and that on the side of the tax payer and the police
Unreal settlement. I have a friend who's grandson was electrocuted by accident while working for a power company. 25yrs old, 2 kids under age 3, and was making about 80K a year. Total combined payout from various entities held responsible along with SS for the kids, and workmans comp. until 18 was around 5 million. How many pols and connected ones are gonna stuff some cash in their pockets after this setlement?
Abandoning the city's legal strategy of suing Quintonio LeGrier's estate shows 9.5 is not looking out for the taxpayers. It shows he is only worried about being re-elected.
How much of that do the attorneys pocket? The higher the settlement the more in their pocket. Blood suckers !
Does this mean Rahm's deposition will never see the light of day?
Biff and Muffy sure are gonna welcome their new neighbors in Wilmete. Yo.....wasss up Muffs....
Where do they come up with these outrageous lawsuit payouts? It was always explained to me (by lawyers) in a wrongful death lawsuit, they take your worth. So if you made 500k per year, your family gets more. They're paying millions and millions to families who had family members killed and I highly doubt made tons of money. It's insanity.
Wow, sounds like a kickback is involved. Seems the lawyers involved got an inside scoop,
So would your spouse and/or your family receive 16 million dollars from the city if you were killed in the line of duty. So how much does the city do for it's own besides the spectacular send off?
Very tragic but there shouldn't have been a dime given out. This is why assholes like Obama should never be elected, or Hillary, or the rest of the rich Liberal elite running this shit show.
You see THEY are already rich and dont give a shit what their socialist policies do. In fact they want the money taken from the working poor and given to the non working poor. Just like they want the kids of the working class to hump black rifles on the other side of the world because, hey fuck it, their kids are tucked nicely away in the Ivy League, waxing eloquent, ready to become the next Leftist Leaders.
Just like these Hollywood assholes like Bob Deniro. The Police are nothing but ditch diggers to assholes like that, "then again our so called Leadership pretty much feels the same."
Rialmo’s Attorneys need to take this all the way to the Supreme Court if he is fired.
How does the city appeal an amount it settled on and agreed to, genius?
If only that “bat holding” twirp had more body mass, that round would not have gone through him and struck her. Now that’s the real reason for her death !! Put Officer Rialmo back on the street !!
If it went to trail in crook county your looking at $50 mil maybe more.
It is bad what happened, but what her expected remaining life time earnings?
A cop, with our better than minimum wage, will gross under 2 million over 25 years.
$16,000,000 / 25 years of work is the same as making $640,000 each year. That is way more than any top surgeons make.
The tax payers should not be on the hook for what bat boy did, and for what bat boy's dad did.
The citizens of Chicago need to get informed about how their tax dollars are spent. Yes it was tragic but $16 million is ridiculous
So now her family gets to live large because she made the mistake of being at the wrong place at the wrong time. If it was up to me, the family would get my sympathy and a lesson to stay out of the way and let the police handle the situation and that's all.
$16 Million is the number Rahm arrived at adjusting for inflation in the three years since he awarded $5 Million to the family of McDonald, under the cover of night and with the election safely in the rear view mirror back in 2015.
The Mayor followed a forward trajectory using this simple premise: McDonald was young and still could have fucked up even more than he had, so his estate was awarded a lower dollar amount. Bettie Jones, by all accounts, had lived 55 years as an upstanding citizen. Therefore, subtracting 17 from 55, and multiplying it by X, the Emanuel administration arrived at the number, based on that number, then further multiplying in on the rising cost of market forces surmounting against the Mayor from the black community, with the multiplier being .3677.
It's Rahm math. It doesn't have to make sense. It just has to be paid by you and me.
$16M because some fool was too stupid to stay in her apartment, or leave the building through through the entrance that didn't have the bat-wielding lunatic in it?
Fuq dat nonsense. Tragic that the woman was hit by the bullet which went through the shithead, but that's what happens when you stick your head up in the middle of a melee.
I'd refuse to pay. Pull a old school Phillip-Morris and tie it up in court forever until everyone involved is dead. Pay no one a cent or the floodgates open, and this isn't corporate $$$, it's taxpayer money.
You know this will get approved - they ALL get approved. And you just flushed another $16M down the toilet. I predict that within record time, they'll coke out on the cash, get kidnapped/killed for the cash, and the whole thing will end up creating more problems than it will solve.
If you HAVE to do something with $16M - put it in the pension fund!
$16 mil? Jesus fucking Christ!
The writer makes it seem as if Quintonio LeGrier were headed to a pickup baseball game. As far as the innocent grandmother who was so precious only 16 million could begin to compensate for her loss, I would like to see how many crimes her spawn and their spawn have committed, and how much taxes they've all paid compared to the benefits they've received. If 16 million dollars can't be justified in assessing the grandmother's value, then the award becomes just another robbery, this time of the taxpayers.

This looms very large indeed.
Well... Only for those who have actually paid attention.
But as it is, local MSM is still engaged in warring against
The Police on Rahm Emanuel's order.
Hotted-up faux outrage and the constant demands for and
promises of "Reform" are needed as a sop with which to
try and satisfy the un-satisfiable and provide the little
Malignant Sissy Manling with a political fig leaf try and
hide his deliberate upward-fucking of this city as a safe
and orderly place for taxpayers to work, live and raise
their families in peace and some expectation of safety
and being able to freely move about unimpeded and
unmolested.
Behold... After 50+ years of state sponsored "gibsmedat,"
"Tha Communerty" has reaped their reward of being pulled
over the societal abyss by their increasingly violent,
hateful, uncivil, ungovernable, gleefully and willfully
ignorant children who are deep in the throes of being
all about themselves.
If you're a student of these things, you'll notice
something interesting that doesn't get as much play
as it should...
Some who are of "Tha' Communerty," like to joke about how
"Tha Communerty" being concerned about the day when society
hardens it's collective heart (over the wails of protest
by "Liberal Whitey") and finally elects to cast off
"Tha' Communerty" to finally fend for and rule itself
without any funding, support or sympathy from society,
"Tha' Communerty" will demand to society: "We ain't lettin'
y'all get away from us!"
It seems that for all the shit-talk from "Tha' Communerty"
to the rest of peaceful, law-abiding everybody else about
the "debt" owed to them, they have absolutely no desire
to allow true self-determination into the picture.
They actually revel in being a drag on society so that
society overall will be hobbled from moving forward and
leaving "Tha' Communerty" behind.
We recall conversations with a REAL old time West Side
Preacherman. Doctor of Religious Education and just
a down-to-earth and quite amusing man to pass time with.
We kept this nugget of wisdom he shared:
"Some folks just need to be left behind
so that everybody else can move forward
and prosper."
Heh... Very biblical POV.
God burned-up the sinful generation
of Israel by making them wander the
Sinai for 40 years before letting them
into the promised land.
"Tha' Communerty" is terrified of getting
similar just desserts and being left to
perform the same old song and dance with
only each other as an audience.
When the societal sympathy card finally
gets voided of their own volition since
they have so much hatred and disdain for
the principles society is founded on.
Look.
Point & Laugh.
Leave.
So just who makes the payoff? Is it an insurance company or the good old taxpayers pockets. Guarantee a big tax increase next year the money has to come from somewhere. That somewhere is Rahms money tree, the stupid Democratic voting taxpayers. LOL at your stupidity for allowing this to continue. So glad in left city years ago, so many fond memories but the city is not that city anymore.
I agree it was tragic that Ms. Jones was killed in this incident and her family should receive something. But c'mon 16 million? Hate to say it but she would never make this in a lifetime and neither will any one on this job. This is just way too much. 2-5 million would have been more appropriate. I am sure the City was extorted into 16 million or else we go to trial and get more... More wasted tax dollars.

Agreed, why not go after the crazed criminals "estate?" If rahm wants to give away "our money" why doesn't he open up his flowing in millions campaign account and he can personally pay the fambly with his personal touch! The lady was innocent, but according to reports the bullet passed through the mental on drugs and stuck her, why are the taxpayers again paying for a police officer that went home safe and did his job by the book? Notice the 50 sheep sign off quickly on this but yet none of the 50 morons stood up to properly fund police pension quickly,or stood up when rahm viciously took away police retirees health care!
From welfare to millionaire what a city. Only in Chicago could any ghetto rat expect to strike it rich. The only sacrifice was a pos and unfortunate person behind him. That's ok the 16 million will be circulated back in the blink of an eye. Then they will be wondering if they can get back into section 8 housing again. Living out of their Escalates is getting old.
Big payout even for an election year. Who approves these outrageous numbers? The city council you say bet there will be some outrageous campaign (payback) contributions next year.
Making it out to be a problem with the police, it’s training and it’s low community trust factor.
Quite the timing, the settlement that is, though tentative, how many council members are going to object? Two, three?
If anything needs reform it’s Tort.
Besides Term Limits for Elected City Office, Tort Reform comes in a very close second.
Blair Holt and Haydia Pendleton.
Where’s their “justice” for being unintended victims of the unchallenged to this day, Chicago Cook County deliberate and intentional gun violence and restorative justice handouts?
Oh, there were “laws” passed.
Laws that effect only the law abiding citizens.
If anything, monetary compensation should come from the campaign pockets of the elected, appointed and the responsible catalyst not the taxpayer general fund. Make it the police fault. It’s these political hacks giving away money that they only control and are not necessarily wholly entitled to.
Leave these compensation settlement pacts to voter referendum and not politician whim.
FunFact:
$16,000,000 is approximately the annual real estate tax revenue generated by just 2,300 single family homes on the far NW side.
Approximately 8,000 Rahm TinyHomes could be built (on the far NW side) to house almost all of Rahm’s growing unwashed homeless voter contingent.
Blaming the police is easy.
Stay Fetal, arrive safe enough to take reports, advise warrants and refer community members to seek legal outlets for resolutions to their many problems.
Why doesn't the city appeal these outrageous amounts I can see maybe $4 Million tops?
================
The answer is simple, but you won't like it. The credibility of the Chicago PD is at an all time low. Does not matter whether it is deserved or not.
It would be different if there was video showing the guy with the bat actually attacking the cop who fired the shot, but without such video, it is just the word of people the average citizen has lost faith in.
The city probably figures that they get into federal court that there is serious potential for an even bigger award by the jury just to make a point.
There is also the problem of a whole series of wrongful conviction cases that are about to hit. The sheer number is going to make CPD look even worse. And juries are composed of human beings. They may well feel the need to punish CPD today for things that happened 20 or 30 years ago. you want to be the lawyer defending this case after 20 or 30 or more people have their convictions overturned?
If you speak with a life insurance guy or gal they will tell you that no one is worth that in their lifetime this isn't life insurance, this is the city being taken to the cleaners at our cost. Guess crime pays. except to the average tax paying citizens. If you don't know what staying fetal is, you have delusions going inside your head that you are Cpt.saveahoe.
I completely agree the woman's survivors deserve some compensation for this terrible outcome, but $16 million? What is that based on?
Attack a cop, get a check. Welcome to Chicago.
Just remember boys and girls, they settled and taxpayers are going to pay for it.
Nobody asked me???
A lot of money, but it is going to the poor and not into some politician's pocket.
6/12/2018 12:35:00 AM
If you believe that, i got some oceanview property i can sell you in south Dakota ! Who gets a large chunk of the settlement....Lawyers.....and who donates large chunks to political campaigns ??? Follow the money !
How about we take this case to trial? 16 million? How was this figure reached?. I say let the people of Chicago vote on this one, it's our money!
Just give it away to someone to buy more black votes it is rahms "values" as he gives away cities "values" in currency! Then we have "crazy Toni" over here:
Officials break ground on $1 billion overhaul of long-vacant Cook County Hospital

Excerpt:She joked the developer will move “expeditiously” on the project because they’re “probably going to lose their shirts on it.”
“But they will make a lot of money on the subsequent phases, so they have a real incentive to get this done,” she said, laughing.
Hmm Toni "laughingly" wonder how much she got in the envelopes stuffed for allowing this? Nowhere in the article does it say how or if the county taxpayers were paid from the buyers!

Bingo again and again votes bought and paid for!! The Chicago way!
dont forget the family isnt getting all of the money , im sure rahm and a couple of alder creatures are pocketing some of the money just as well.

It's by statute and contract. Go to FOP web site, under Departed Members/Death Benefits
There you will find what else is done for a KIA's family besides a parade and bagpipes. Read that and you can be the one that informs everyone else.
Other Benefits May Be Available Through
Chicago Police Memorial Foundation
100 Club of Chicago. (Cook County I think, run by Joe Ahern, former boss of several TV stations in Chicago. But he makes nothing near Phat Phil's huge salary)
CPD Credit Union
Bet they take the money and run to a lower tax rate town. Texas, Florida or las Vegas.
Rahm says, Sorry no money for your pension just gave it away to a bunch of pos that needed it more then you. No they didn't earn it, just thought they deserved it more than you. He is playing you suckers because he knows there is nothing you can do about it. He wins again.
I think the big winner may be the horseshoe casino?🤔

It's based on previous settlements for wrongful death by this and other Police Departments. I would guess that many top plaintiff's attorney's would rather take it to trial also. Potential for a larger settlement.
The only one who will get their money here in one lump sum is the attorney. The family will get what's left of the $16 million in the form of an annuity over 20 years or more. They don't publish that but that's the way it is.
So does that mean they should no longer be on welfare, right?
Sad but true fact, but it costs the city much much less when a PO is maimed or killed than when peeples or folks get killed or injured as a result of police action. It kind of reminds me of the movie "They were expendable". I guess we can call our officers expendable since the city obviously prefers the lower cost option. Stay fetal my friends.

Gun control "die-in" protests downtown. CPD Sergeant and Officers posing for pictures with the anti-gun protesters, supporting their political agenda. Is anyone being reprimanded? The two black Officers took time for the "black fist" pose. What say you IAD?
Cameras should have been recording.

Many smaller benefits add up.
Never enough for some, it is what it is.
Family or spouse receives one year of deceased officer's full salary. Then it goes to 75% widow's pension, tax free, for life.
Kids get a free ride in school.
No, they don't become millionaires. Neither do they scrape by for groceries. Still bitter? Stay safe. Maybe you would rather get a job in the steel or aluminum industry.
I got through the career more or less safely. Retired 5 years. Over $300,000 paid to me so far, for not working. Plus the part time job I do, wearing a smile. I have no complaints, but that is just me. The further I get from the job, the better I feel.
I check out SCC to catch up on all the whining and complaining I don't fucking miss one bit.
Take it easy boys and girls. There's a good life out there. If you can't enjoy it while on the job, sorry for that. If you can return to the human race after retirement, after about a year you'll see what I mean.
They said “alleging police misconduct”. No one said it was sustained.
Ridiculous. Of course the attorney said it not about the money. Yeah right!!

Nitwit, no one gets a check for $16 million. It is an annuity. After lawyer's fee, expenses etc, the family gets the rest over 20 or 30 years. That's how the City pays these large awards. Lawyer gets his in one lump, no one else.
Rarely does anyone suing the city get their dough in a lump sum, one check.

Rahm is getting the money now being paid into the pension fund, per state law, from the money that formerly was used to pay for retirees health insurance. All you still on the job will suddenly say upon retirement, "What the fuck, I get no retiree health insurance?" That's right. The City put the FOP in the health insurance business. You choose between the blue Cross plan they put together or the Aetna. But you pay. And if you are not on Medicare, you will pay more.
Haven't people been reading that Trump wants to cut Medicare? Yup. Ot just leave it to run out of money. Then retirees can go back to the cat food diet. Better make plans on insuring yourself upon retirement.
The lawsuit against the City by Krislov is just about in the tank. The latest big decisions have all gone against the retirees. And coppers being coppers, few were sending any money to Krislov to fund the lawsuit.

Oh, gee, that makes it all so much better.....why, this won't effect my taxes at all!!!!
In fact, this seems suspisciously simliar to the entire democratic party politicians conception of economics!!!!!
It reminds me of the fable of the two bank robbers, you know, the old school learning from the new guy.
What, you never heard this one?
Old school bank robber dead set on stealing a cool million, planning on doing it on a given day.
New guy says, that ain't smart, really risky.
Old school, feathers ruffled, ejaculates: Well, smart ass, how'd you do it!!?? (always wanted to use the word ejaculates in a non sexual sentence)
New guy says, Well, we could just hack into the bank's system and take a buck from each of a million accounts, cover the withdrawls coded as fake fee charge, and no one would even know they were robbed.
Old school then erupts with a stream of copious profanties, concluding with a pathetic sounding admission that he don't know how to do that.
New guy, after pondering the wisdom of not replying with the obvious, wtf do I need you for then, gently explains that getting access to the bank's connections will be the old school's task.
Thus, old school does not immediately whack the new guy.
Taxed to poverty by a thousand, thousand penny cuts.
The democratic party politicians preferred method.

Begin with some seemingly indisputable facts, segue to the onerous implications of those seemingly indisputable facts, insert the always revealing deceitful shot at our President, never as subtly as desired by the deceivers, then conclude with a bit more shit tossing upon those they want to antangonize.
Yep, democrat troll.
All ambiguous shit talk, little to no specificity, no actual, effectively helpful actions, equals, democrats.

Didn’t the Illinois Supreme Court rule in 2014 in favor of the state employees lawsuit saying their retiree health insurance was protected by the state constitution? Then when ours comes before them, they refuse to hear it. What does that tell you?

Not sure except that our retiree health insurance was never in the contract. It was "an understanding," that everyone took to be a "Promise." Both Daley's stuck to it. This jagoff Rahm had to come up with pension money on that yearly catch up shit enacted into state law. He got the money from canceling the retiree insurance.
He found out he could cancel the retiree insurance so he did and said "sue me." We did, but all we had was sort of a "past practice" thing and it was heard in the Daley Center courts, not Federal Court. Contact Clinton Krislov's office and get on the email list to stay informed. The last email I got was a "this isn't looking good" sort of thing. You can send a check for $50 or $25 because there was nothing else paying the bills. We paid the bills by voluntary donations. I sent him $300 since he filed the case.

Subject: Retiree Update: Pending Matters
Participants,
Our Fourth Amended Complaint and new Motion for Class Certification are on file (attached).
The City and Funds, and the Court all wanted new amended versions to be filed. We resisted, but the new complaint includes all of the Korshak trial transcript, which shows that the Funds cannot now seriously dispute their obligations to provide coverage for their annuitants.
Read the complaint and exhibits here: . Retiree Healthcare - amended complaint". The exhibits now are so lengthy that as a single package they would exceed your email limits. We have the exhibits up on our website as separate items, and we’ll suggest things to look at individually.

This is good, really good. If you have a few bucks, send something to Krislov to help pay for this. There is more than one attorney in his office working on this. If he doesn't win, he doesn't get paid. Police are under no obligation to pay, do it because it is the right thing to do. $10 at least.

And you present this without the slightest compunction, nor the tiniest bit of commentary on why the fuck would anyone expect any positive result from filing in any court in this county a lawsuit opposed to the workngs of the democrat socialist party of crooks?
Fuck, you must be the slickster lawyer.
And then you beg for money?
Democrat.
When this travesty is filed in Federal court, now that there's NOT a democrat continuing to ruin our country, maybe you'd be taken seriously, and not deliriously.

Wait till you retire and find yourself without retiree health insurance. Probably you'll complain about democrats again and wonder why "someone doesn't do sumpthin'". I try to get people interested but most are like you. Can't be bothered and think you're being cheated if you are asked to send $10 or $20 or $50. But hey, if some drunken cop wrecks and get's suspended, "he's a good guy." Right? Just don't spend any of your martini money on something like a law firm that's been the only one's fighting for restoration of our retiree health insurance. Maybe you can find a Republican lawyer who will do it for free.
So happy not to be sitting in a squad car with the likes of you. You think I'm a lawyer? Oh that's good.

It will never be filed in Federal Court. Statute of Limitations among other reasons.
