Frisk....and Frisk Again

This mope should have been searched at least three times before hitting County:
  • Chicago police are investigating how a Humboldt Park man with a long criminal history got a loaded handgun past officers and into the police station lockup over the weekend.

The .22-caliber handgun was discovered by a cleaner while tidying the holding cell at the police station at 2452 W. Belmont Ave., according to police and Cook County prosecutors.

Authorities said Miguel Acevedo, 38, was picked up by police early Saturday when they discovered him and another man, a documented gang member, “using narcotics” inside a car on the Northwest Side.

Acevedo, who was on parole for a 2017 drug conviction, told officers his name was "Luis Rodriguez" and then "Angel Gonzalez." Police later determined Acevedo's true identity and his status as a parolee. He was arrested and charged with obstructing his identity and a parole violation, authorities said.

Acevedo was processed at the police station on Belmont known as “019 West” and brought to a cell where he was alone, authorities said. Surveillance video caught him hiding the gun, loaded with five rounds, underneath a mattress.
Frisk #1 on the street. Frisk #2 before hitting lockup. Frisk #3 in the lockup. But no one found this gun? Come on people - fetal doesn't mean "stupid," and this was stupid in the extreme.

Once a person is under arrest you can do more than a frisk, which is generally an external feel of the garments. Once under arrest, a search incident to arrest is allowable and necessary. This allows for the reach into all pockets and anything in the personal control of the arrestee. Of course, in this climate the law doesn't matter. Police are always wrong because we have been branded a racist, outlaw profession, so it's amazing these arrests are still being made at all.

IAD needs to take ANY case that a cop failed to search a prisioneer multiple times and was later found to be armed during the entire process, with the highest scrutiny possible. IAD should hand out massive time for this. Mistakes(incompetence) like this could have ended up being a terrible story on the national news! IAD should review every minute of video from the first custodial search all the way through. This is the most dangerous type of mistake a police officer can make. I feel any cop that fucks up like this should be stripped and sit and think about what they did during the investigation. They placed a lot of cops in danger. No excuse to miss a gun. Ever!

My question is will there be any punishment administered to the officers or will this be an "oh well live and learn" moment? Someone's ass should sanctioned big time because innocent officers could have been killed if jagoff decided he was going to go postal. What a complete fuck-up this could have been. Someone should be suspended for at least 7-14 days just on principle.

Happens too often. I've witnessed some pretty pathetic putdowns that would miss a bowling ball in the pants. Custodial searches should be much more thorough and invasive but often are not. Cops are afraid of putting hands on people. Add black if training and leadership and you wind up with situations like this one. Lucky break but the next one might turn into a tragedy.

Three problems:

1. There is a big difference between frisk and search.
We should never frisk. We should search.
A proper search is a legal sexual assault.

2. Young coppers are afraid to touch someone.
They are afraid to GRAB down there.
They are afraid to get into trouble.

3. Nowadays the bad guys usually carry big guns, large frame
9mm and 45s. The old Saturday Night Special (clerke) in 22 or
25 cal are rare. Hard to look for something you have never seen.

4. PPOs are being trained by people just off probation.
They maybe book smart but don't know procedures.
The old drunken wagon men of the '70s knew how to search.
When they found a gun or dope they knew how to embarrass you
for weeks. You learned. Most would show you how to search.
If you missed money, you never knew about it. ;-)

Trust me this wasn’t the first time this has happened. Probably happens more often than you think and how many suspects were in a squad and released without finding the gun or I imagine in other cases were placed in the lockup and later released on bond taking the gun with him.
I am surprised tho how quickly other po’s want to throw these po’s under the bus. Not saying they shouldn’t be disciplined and that a tragedy could have occurred also with the new group of PPO’s being hired, it doesn’t surprise me

Why not take a few funds from the CAPS community nonsense budget and buy metal detector wands for the Districts and the Lockups.
These devices are under $100 each and probably DHS/TSA has loads of them no longer being used and likely destined for salvage auction.

Too much to ask for from the city.
$100 only gets 2 hr rental for a inflatable block party jungle gym.
$100 buys COPA a half box of community announce flyers.
$100 supllies (not buys) 10 feral homeless freeloaders with Sanctuary ID’s.

Penalties for that infraction will save the city thousands.
The parolee goes on paroling unscathed again.

This is because the Lockup aid at 019 does not do his job. He is never even in the Lockup he's sitting at the desk with the desk crew all night? Yes the desk sgt. lets this happen. Most of the time he doesn't even go back to help process a prisoner. He does whatever he wants and when you bring in a prisoner he gets all mad he might just have to leave sitting at the desk and go back to lockup to do his job.
What a joke. No supervision with these guys whatsoever.
And this is when he is even there, he seems to take off must every weekend. Anytime he wants too.

Airports have big metal detectors and body scanners for people who haven't been suspected of any crime to pass through to make sure they aren't carrying weapons. Police stations have the hands and eyes of a few people to make sure that people suspected of violent crimes, often involving guns and knives, aren't carrying weapons. Lockup has those cute little handheld metal detectors, but it's too late once they get back there. We should have some of this fancy technology where it's needed, at police stations. I know it's "too expensive." Actually securing our stations with locking doors, walls that aren't made of huge panes of glass, secure parking facilities, and a policy that doesn't allow any and everyone to come and go as they please would be nice as well. But it all costs money, and it would send the wrong message to "the community." So the safety of the police, and the ability to properly do their job, comes second. This city will never spend the money to properly equip and protect its police, so it's up to us. We need to do better searches. Homeless people carry knives and razor blades. Just because it's "just a shoplifter" doesn't mean he can't kill you or someone else. I don't care how dirty he is. Put some gloves on and do your job. When arresting gang members, you should always do a thorough search. These people are violent criminals who don't like you, and you're taking away their freedom. Do you think they won't hurt or kill you if given the chance? Protect yourselves and your fellow officers. We could also use better training on custodial searches. Make everyone do it over and over in the academy, especially the snowflakes who get all uncomfortable with touching certain areas. Force them to do it right or they don't pass. Tapping someone's pockets and shaking their pant legs isn't a custodial search. Saying "Empty your pockets" isn't the same as you actually going through those pockets. Take their socks and shoes and you search them. Use gloves and do the search instead of having the arrestee be in control. If someone gets hurt or killed, including your arrestee, because you missed a weapon in your search, that's on you. The discipline and lawsuits won't be fun.

This guy was a big dude (i.e. Fat ass) he cheeked the gun the whole time. Unfortunately we aren't able to get up in there anymore and check for guns, dope , knives etc. this is what happens when you keep taking away the ability for police to be the police. Think about how many gang bangers have a gun on them while talking to the police on a stop because there was no RAS for the pat down. It's scary and that's why I'm leaving (retiring) by the end of the year.

I am reading a lot of these comments, and missing a gun is a bad thing, but many coppers don't search prisoners the way they should. I don't know now that a metal detector wand would help, and they won't buy those scanners they have in airports. Also, would it detective a gun in someone's rectum or vagina or behind the testicles. I was always taught to search someone, even if they have been searched. And I have almost missed a gun, it was in an ankle holster, luckily I saw it before he got to lockup. I have found crack pipes, dope, and other things others have missed. But I have missed cell phones on prisoners too. And I have heard many times, female officers cannot search male offenders. The next time I hear it, I will tell the male supervisor to search this prisoner or write me up. I don't want that of course, but I could not live with myself if a gun or knife was missed on one of my arrestees.

Not saying this was not a terrible mistake, but it happens. We need to come up with a better policy, and figure out how to search without getting into trouble for strip search, without authorization, read the order, in a day when many supervisors don't want to make decisions.
