Why Not Record Teachers?
- Paul Boron is 13 years old. And he’s facing a felony eavesdropping charge that could change the course of the rest of his life. His story stands as another chapter of controversy surrounding an eavesdropping law some experts have criticized as ripe for abuse and misapplication.
On Feb. 16, 2018, Boron was called to the principal’s office at Manteno Middle School after failing to attend a number of detentions. Before meeting Principal David Conrad and Assistant Principal Nathan Short, he began recording audio on his cellphone.
Boron said he argued with Conrad and Short for approximately 10 minutes in the reception area of the school secretary’s office, with the door open to the hallway. When Boron told Conrad and Short he was recording, Conrad allegedly told Boron he was committing a felony and promptly ended the conversation. Two months later, in April, Boron was charged with one count of eavesdropping – a class 4 felony in Illinois.
Firstly, shouldn't a parent have been in attendance? Sure, the kid seems like an out-of-control ass, but as we are all aware, asses of all stripes are expected to be treated with kid gloves and god forbid you violate their rights in the tiniest manner.
Second, public school teachers and principals are public employees, right? And the big push is to record public employees in the performance of their duties, correct? The core argument is that if you performing a government function, then you have no expectation of any sort of privacy interacting with the public - police especially, but why not teachers, principals, building inspectors, aldercreatures, and dare we say it? Mayors.
At the very least, we'll have all sorts of proof in the event of false accusations against teachers, classroom attacks by students, and liberal indoctrination efforts.

It won't change the course of his life. Once he hits 18, his record will be automatically expunged, just like all the other juvenile felons in Illinois. Voila! Clean slate.

I have all the respect in the world for teachers. It's a rough job. Nonetheless, there are some bad apples in the profession same with ours and every other. Most are hard working people with a tough job but a few are predators who are there to commit sexual crimes on one or more of their underaged students. It's a job that attracts sexual predators because they're in control of kids and it's the kid's word against theirs unless there's DNA evidence. And what kid wants to admit that this happened? And some think their parents won't believe them. The times when a teacher is locked up the media buries the stories or plants them on page 9 of the paper because it would cause a crisis if parents were afraid to send their kids to school. These types of crimes breed the worst of criminals. So yes teachers should be watched. Notice that the CPS scandal is dying down. A few principals got fired and its business as usual.

I thought recording a public official by a private citizen was no longer against the... school districts have always pretended to be above the... one downstate district prohibited recording during open meetings. During the Ferguson protests a few years back CPS employees sure seemed to be in favor of video and audio recording... you know for prosperity's sake.
There's no such thing as privacy anymore. Everyone is being recorded, I used to do a part-time at a school and there were cameras everywhere. This law is stupid. And finally Rahm should be recorded at all times.

This morning, before the demonstration, you should drive around the neighborhood and warn all the fine upstanding citizens standing around on the corners, and in front of the bottle shop, that they should be careful, that the police are going to be really busy at the demonstration, and they need to look out for themselves. I am sure that they will step up and keep their neighborhoods safe.
Consider it a community service.

Positions of authority, whatever the nature of that authority may be, are presumed to be held by those sufficiently qualified to utilize said authority as designed and intended to be applied to and upon those so designated to be imposed upon.

The public educational system within our nation has been, for nearly a century now, effectively a monopoly, funded by compelled taxations, and intended to produce a conformity toxic to both the individuals subjected, by law and financial conditions, and our nation as a whole, via the designed end results imposed thereupon.
It has been quite the racket.
Disregarding individual talents, propensities, natural abilities, sincere interest, enthusiasm, innate individual determination, family support and encouragement, etc., and insistently imposing mickey mouse levels of chicaneries upon students, (CPS being one of many of this ilk), the continuation of this jamming, cramming and slamming individuals into the same, useless, retardedly assinine bucket of moronic mediocrity is all that these public systems are fervantly dedicated to doing.
Any individual actual teaching minded employees, rare as they may be, are thus compelled to create ways and means to help their students, despite all the many obstacles imposed upon their efforts.
Older students, ie., middle to high school, have already been subjected to these impeding effects and carry these handicaps of perspective expected conformity with them into their most important stages of approaching adulthood.

Teachers are public employees and should not be above the law especially with all the sexual abuse that has ocurred in the CPS schools which was highlighted in the paper last week. Besides the students complaining in certain cases other school employees complained and at least there would be a factual account of what was reported, said and when

To everyone who is complaining about the state's attorney approving charges my question is when did we start calling the state to approve juvie charges? Is this something new that I was unaware of or have those questioning it never arrested a juvenile? And yes I do realize that a capital crime is on a different playing field but I don't think this or most other arrests fall into that category.
I read a few articles about this earlier in the week. I do agree that if police can be recorded, then so should teachers & school administrators. I also have a problem with a 13 yr old kid to be “arguing” with authorities. If that was my kid I would of beat his ass. But he was stopped in the hallway because they wanted to talk to him because he had detentions that he was suppose to have served but refused to keep going. So something tells me that this kid is a Lil Asshole and has No Respect for authority. I am sure that when he starts having regular interactions with the police as he takes his act to higher levels, he will be doing the same thing.

SCC, I am taking the other side of the argument....I think we need less big brother and more give them a kick in their ass and when their parents find out they get another kick in the ass. I am more than willing to go back to those days when people had respect and politicians were a little corrupt! We are only getting worse as each day passes under this liberal sanctuary anti-police agenda of today!
Fuck Baron the little left wing jagoff. In my day you got called to the teachers office when you got home you caught a few cracks or got grounded. You never talked back to adults, the police or teaches because we had respect.
At work, I conduct myself professionally on principle, but always assume a student could be recording (they do), someone could eavesdrop on the intercom, sites visited on the work laptop might be monitored, not to mention school cameras, and on all my devices the cameras are covered, only the microphones vulnerable to hacking (not much to hear.) There's no expectation of privacy anymore. As far as students taking advantage, I don't worry much about mine, but as a matter of policy, always leave a door open when alone in a room with one.

I think any interaction with a public employee acting in his/her capacity as a public employee should be fair game for recording. This should be litigated. i don't see how anyone acting as an agent of the state has any expectation of privacy.
I'm a teacher. I have no problem with it. Might be good to show 'shield mom' what her lil darlin is up to when she's not around. And it serves as a good record of the discussion in case it all goes south for the parents as they flail about trying to blame me or my staff. 'Cause I don't blame the mom for the kid's behavior, that's on the kid, but I do hold her responsible for her response to it, and I've dealt with enough 'shield moms' to expect another one when an entitled brat acts up.
I suspect the real reason is that some of the 'lawyer dads' don't really want to have to accept what they have helped to create, or be caught on tape/video threatening the staff. Seen enough of them too.

Government buildings are, by definition, not privately owned property.
Nor are individuals, employed by government, while actively engaged in their employment duties, entitled to privacy concerning those duties' performance. Especially whilst performing those duties within said government buildings.
The few exceptions to this are not relevant to this particular instance.

Another news flash- It's a big country and there are other teachers like me, we are fully willing to be recorded because we could throw it back at all the misinformed. And not all of us support the union politicos but this is Illinois (maybe changing now!) we had to become part of it.

The kid may have been a little terrorist but he wasn't charged for acting up. He was charged for secretly recording on his phone. I don't know how I could possibly care less. He could have hauled off and gave a classmate a two piece combination and wouldn't have been charged like this. I certainly don't care about a principal, teacher, other govt worker for that matter being audio and video recorded. It's better than pushing people back on the sidewalk while they are holding their camera phone in your face. The kid needs a kick in his behind from a father not a felony.
