The best thing to happen to me at CPD was never getting promoted. I did my 21-years and when the opportunity presented itself I bailed. I moved out of state. I started a new job and last year I made as much as a deputy. For those of you who are young enough and healthy enough and have the education and I don't mean the diploma mill online, you should consider your options and get out. At my new gig promotions are legitimate, they value and appreciate your work, and you have to be reinvestigated every five years to make sure you're not doing anything s***** like collecting a deceased person's check or not paying your taxes. If I had been promoted by CPD I probably wouldn't have left. I would have been all twisted up and eaten up with all the political nonsense and resentment. I look at my life now and I cannot believe I'm here doing the things that I'm doing. I'm a completely different person. I loved my job at CPD and I miss my friends there terribly, but the department and city have been destroyed. I rarely even visit now.

Most funeral parlors will do the notifying but I don't believe they're legally obligated to do so. They provide that service as part of the package. I've never been involved in a family member's death where the funeral parlor did not notify social security.

This is stolen money used for God knows what. Bill collectors may settle for a pay off amount, but not the Social Security Administration.
Even if a recipient goes missing prior to check day the social security administration wants to be notified before the next check day. They’ll put a temporary freeze on next months check. If a person dies in June, the payee can’t collect July’s check and bury them with it. Social social will make you pay July’s check back.
This is why payees must have their own income prior to becoming a payee of a recipient. The Administration runs the SSI# of all payees prior to approving them. Social Security don’t want anyone other than the recipient, benefit from the money.

false story. When a person dies and a death certificate is issued, the state department of health and the county notify the social security admin and the number goes on the death index. The death index used to be open to the public, but by law was closed in 2014 because of fraud. You would have to keep the dead kin in your basement in order to keep collecting the checks. You might get one or two that are not authorized, but you would have to pay those back, in full.

Ex-cop turned funeral director here. When someone passes, I have 7 days to file a "Statement of Death" to the SS Administration. I fill it out and mail it in otherwise I get disciplined by the state. The only way to keep getting a person's checks is for that person to go missing in action- and not even report them missing.

I worked with a copper years ago who kept cashing his father's SS checks after he died. SS notified the bank and they stopped payments on checks. The bank knew the district police and told the copper to just repay the money. He refused so they filed a beef, he caught time and still had to repay the money. Lucky he didnt get charged. You must notify SS folks immediately.
