What a Bargain!
- The foundation behind the planned Obama Presidential Center in Chicago has a tentative agreement with the city to pay just $10 to use 19.3 acres of city park space for 99 years, according to a report.
The accord is described in legislation that Mayor Rahm Emanuel's administration will send to the City Council on Thursday, the Chicago Sun-Times reported.
If approved, the proposals will bring the estimated $350 million project closer to reality.
And again, this ISN'T the "official" presidential library:
- The foundation said in May 2017 that Obama’s official presidential library will not be housed at the Jackson Park campus. A permanent location for the Obama Presidential Library is still being determined.
Which will be yet another monument to an oversized ego.

Never knew this wasn’t the OFFICIAL Obama library. What a joke. Worst President in history for many reasons. Not the least of which is what he did NOT do for race relations and what he DID do to create hate for police all across the nation. Hope and Change huh. Screw this guy. Give him the corner lot so ewhere and call it good.
$350 million? This boondoggle will definitely run over budget too. Lots to steal.

It appears construction of the Barack Obama Presidential Center has been halted (at least temporarily) over trees.
The Chicago Sun-Times reported in August that the park district was cutting down trees in Jackson Park despite a federal lawsuit, city and federal approvals pending, and a pledge from the Obama Foundation CEO to keep trees intact until the permitting process is complete.
Given the controversy over the tree cutting and federal agencies becoming more active in reviews, the city at the beginning of September decided to slow down construction of a new track field – needed because the proposed Obama Center will be taking over land where an existing field is located.
The city decision to stop the work came after a Sept. 11 meeting with the National Park Service and the Federal Highway Administration.

So this is the pretend BHO presidential library? 350 million and it isn't even the real thing. As big of a joke as his presidency except for the fact that we are paying for it still. All MLK got was a road and this jacko-- gets a pretend library? O'Well it is Chicago after all so dig a little deeper after all it's for the children.
Its certain that NOBODY in city council cast a Nay vote on this stroking of Obama's ego by his former chief of staff. The friends of the park were successful in blocking the Lucas spaceship on the lake but this bullshit edifice to eight years of failure managed to get through with a cheapie lease to boot.
If this thing has to be built, and there are so many concerns in the black community that some benefit to them be shown, why not put it where infrastructure improvements costing millions wouldn't be necessary. Every day the Metra rolls past the site of the old Kennedy King college which is now nothing more than flattened land. Or, didn't his Obamaness come to Pullman to declare it a national landmark? Surely there's some space there. Or, didn't they extend Lake Shore Drive further south, towards the shuttered steel mills?
The whole project is nothing more than a huge and expensive ego stroke, that will contain nothing of presidential substance. Were that not the case, there'd be no need to put a branch of the Chicago Public Library in there for filler. And those that want to worship the memory of the 44th president wouldn't mind taking the trip to more accessible areas of the south side.
Short of those locations, maybe they could do a switch and put the thing up on the site proposed for the Police/Fire training academy near Chicago and Keating. Or better yet, maybe Mythbusters could wise up Chicagoans about the fiction and fabrication this Hope and Change panderer did during his time in office and we could forget the whole damn thing.
Build it on the dumps where it belongs.

Imagine the real estate tax bill would be on 19 acres up in Edgebrook.
1/8 of an acre (8500sf) acccounts for about $3000 a year on a tax bill for a basic 1 story 1400 sf bungalow.
Think of all the funds that could be used to support education and healthcare for the folks that voted the absent rectal abscess.
The biggest threat to overspending on this financial monstrosity is going to come from the next obama supporting mayor and governor.

It will be stopped by the feds. It is not a presidential library, so it can not take park land. It is a private corporation. Nice try city hall. The park district bosses should do some jail time for cutting down the trees, since it is a historic, protected asset.

Did you ever think that this project was all about developing that area to payback all of those who speculated on Chicago getting the Olympics? Lots of politically influential people got the inside tip on where the Olympic sites were going to be and bought up the property. I bet some "friends" are sitting pretty with their investments in the near vicinity of this new project.
Blair Kamin, who is the Chicago Tribune's architecture critic since 1992, appeared on the PBS-WTTW-Channel 11's Chicago Tonight program on Thursday-20 September 2018. He related part of 9.5's legacy will be the success of getting the Obama Presidential Center to locate in Chicago. He said New York and Hawaii wanted it!
