Negligent Discharge
- A Chicago police captain was shot in the leg Tuesday afternoon when a gun accidentally went off in his squad car in Albany Park on the Northwest Side, authorities said.
The officer drove to Swedish Covenant Hospital on the North Side, where he was stabilized before being transferred to Illinois Masonic Hospital, according to police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi.
“The officer was talking, alert and in good spirits," Guglielmi said in a tweet.
Few details were being released, but the shooting occurred around 1:35 p.m. in the 3200 block of West Argyle Street, police said. "The accidental shooting happened while the officer was in his vehicle,” Guglielmi said.
The shooting prompted Chicago police Superintendent Eddie Johnson to leave the Police Department’s budget hearing at City Hall.
Since he got Special Ed out of a tedious and boring political meeting, he will probably be promoted to Commander.

Will the Capt. be stripped for this negligence?
Finger straight and off the trigger, captain!
This sounds like what happened to the retired boss Chasen.
slightly off topic but......
haven't seen the 016 midnite W/C for over a month, maybe the department finally caught on to his OC connections??
Ouch. That’s gotta hurt.
Superintendent must have made the Captain.
Merit?????
Let me guess, it was a striker-fired Glock, which has no manual safety. You That said, firearms do not go affect accidentally unless something pulls the trigger
Ahhhhhhhhhh!!! The ol' "gun accidentally went off" story.
Uh huh. Right.
And what's this we're hearing regarding the chain of events that precipitated the whole incident?
Let's see just how quickly this one fades away. Remember... the Brassholes are held to a completely set of standards.
Before you all go and start knocking the captain, dont be so foolish to think this cant happen to you. These striker fire weapons are nothing to fool with, and if you're around these types of weapons systems long enough, you will eventually have an unintentional duscharge.
Commander? Well please don’t send him to 12. The last time a capt was shot we got stuck with bubblehead.
Hmm... sounds like somebody's finger was in the trigger guard when it shouldn't have been.
Keep the booger hook off the trigger... it’s not accidental it’s negligent!
Disability jackpot!
Oh wait he's a Captain? Nothing to see here move along. NO disciplinary action will be taken.
Yep, only the best and the brightest!
I'm sure Eddie would have added a great deal of insight to the meeting, as he had just opened his new box of 64 crayolas. Eddie Fenner, the black Jethro Bodine.
Couldn't have happened to a, uh, nicer guy.
“The shooting prompted Chicago police Superintendent Eddie Johnson to leave the Police Department’s budget hearing at City Hall.“
I sure Kidney Bean was more prompted to go and take a shit and fire a PPO than anything... But does anyone have any faith in Kidney Bean’s accounting skills— why he is a budget hearing? When he should be at a town hall meeting talking with the local citizens.
Nice guy.....but dumb as a box of rocks.
Isn't Merit wonderful. One down so many more to go. Did Ed suspend him?
In good spirits? Bet he and Fat Head Ed had a good laugh over his stupidity.
He’s an idiot who should have been fired long ago. But, he’s got that Daley clout...
will heyjackass count this as a selfie?
inquiring minds need to know.
You have got to be kidding me.
Well this is proof of who cpd promote to supervisor are total jokes.
Guess anyone can shoot themselves but you have to ask how this happened?
NEVERMIND, this is now the circus and they want us all to fit inside of the clown car......I have got to go.
How the fuck do you shoot yourself with your own firearm ?????????
Captain E. O. Is a goof. As a Tact Sgt always took box 1 instead of giving credit to his Tact guys. Wonder how this will help his excessive ego?
I bet that he was Merit
Was he trying to scratch his ass?
Dumb ass
Glock Leg ???
Does Mr. Wheezy have more questions than answers at this point?
Rub some dirt on it..... he’ll be fine.
That never happened with my revolver.
How the fuck do you shoot yourself with your own firearm ?????
Probably the only good shooting he’s ever been in. I see a Supt medal of Valor and a promotion in Forest Gumps future. And why was he trolling around 017? Was he going to reenact the time he was a Sgt there in the late 90’s and jumped a 6’ wooden fence only to land in a 4’above ground pool? Classic
Barney Five!
The fact that this guy made captain is a miracle of modern science. His exploits are well known to us up north. Long live zoolander, the consent to search king.
Was he stripped???? And is COPA investigating???
Yes, right, take guns away fro police for their own safety. The old Los Angeles Police chief ordered officers in 1950 to not load revolvers with any thing more powerful than 38 round no’s. The reason given was too many cops being shot with their own guns, and less chance of being killed.
Old - timer wheelies never “accidentally” shoot in your vehicle. If you can’t safely handle your semi-auto, don’t carry one. Glad to hear the Capt is ok, but maybe he should be sent back to the academy for some range training safety techniques. In the meantime he’ll be on medical for months.
I’m betting Big Ed will now reward the shooting capt. by making him Cmdr. Stay tuned.
This guy is mush. Came off the medical to squeeze into a Lt's class a week late. The gold stars like him because he'll do anything they ask without thinking about the repercussions.
Keep them French fries away from your weapon, ban French frise NOW.

What fucking guns do we carry with manual safeties? They are all DAO or stryker's, 1911 actions are not on the approved list.

He's not the sharpest knife in the draw, he has a Sgt. that helps him make decisions so he doesn't look stupid. Imagine he's not going to do gun checks to soon if ever.
Should have stuck with a sig
>>>>> 'A Chicago police captain was shot in the leg Tuesday afternoon when a gun accidentally went off in his squad car...' <<<<<
So.... was it his 'gun' or not, Tribune? Or was it just some random 'gun' that was walking down the street and decided to jump in his squad and fire? Oh well, just chalk this incident up to that 'gun violence' we read about almost every day. Though being a police Captain you'd think he'd know how sneaky 'guns' can be and are always shooting people ... and folk.
Okay, mocking of Tribune reporting aside, SCC's title for this thread nails it. There was nothing 'accidental' about this, it was a Negligent Discharge, and that's that. (these 'no safety' Striker-Fired Glocks (and others) is why I stick with my 1911)
And enquiring minds want to know -- Why was this Captain messing around with his firearm while sitting in his squad car? Hopefully Supt Fenner asked that question and will share the answer with the public.
Gta be a glock! You can’t give me one!! I prefer double single!!
10/31/2018 01:04:00 AM
You're a moron
Why the hell are you messing around with your weapon while you’re driving. As the great Forrest Gump said ” Stupid is stupid does”. They should put that on the side of the squad instead of to serve and protect
Old Retired Guy Here, Again .....! I do not know if this incident involved a Glock Pistol. So I will not comment on the actual incident. What I do "KNOW" is Glock Pistol's Must Be Handled, With All Due Care ! Yes, I have heard all the arguments. Yes, I know they are "Fabulous". In my opinion, over fifty years of carry and shooting handguns, they never should have been manufactured, without a slide safety. That three quarter disc on the trigger, in my opinion, is NOT a safety. It's a JOKE !!!
Be Careful Out There !
Have nothing bad to say about this Capt....worked for him years ago in 025 and encountered a dire family situation...he could not have been any better to me and my family...i guess it is just par for the course to talk garbage on here, but I could not have asked any more of a supervisor. Heal up, Capt. and know that you are in our family's prayers
My Glock went off when my curiosity got the best of me. On the job many years and put my finger on the trigger. Doesnt take much to go off. Thru mattress and wall. Thank God for old brick houses. Costume for a new comforter for my bed. Wifey was not happy.
I don’t get all the “he must be merit” comments. No shit, everyone above LT is made. Now I do not know how he ascended through the ranks be it score or merit. Would that change anyone’s perception of how this happened. If he somehow scored well enough and shot himself does that change anything?

10/31/2018 01:04:00 AM
Wrong. The approved striker fired weapons approved by the Department incorporate internal safeties, meaning that they cannot be fired UNLESS THE TRIGGER IS PRESSED. Further, unintentional/accidental discharges have occurred with ALL types weapons. Keep your finger away from the trigger, and it WON'T happen to you.
With the cold weather, jackets with dangling cords can get caught in the trigger. Make sure your weapon is in the holster and not tucked with a piece of clothing caught around the trigger guard. Inspect your jackets for material that dangles and can get caught in the trigger or holster.
Also the seat belt can depress all sorts of parts of the gun. Not saying that this is the cause, but it is a known cause of accidental discharge. Be careful when wearing a lot of layers of clothing.
That's one way to earn a purple heart.

Coupla things:
1). You're a fucking moron.
2). Get off the Captains nuts.
3). It won't happen to me because I'm smart enough to not place my finger (or any other instrument capable of manipulating the trigger ) on or anywhere near said trigger UNLESS I PLAN TO IMMINENTLY FIRE THE WEAPON

ISP transitioned from S&W 5904 9mm semi-autos to .40 cal Glock 22's back in 2000. Within the first month we had an accidental discharge on the range where an officer shot himself in the leg during reholstering. Never cared for the Glock myself. Fingers off the triggers boys and girls.

Transport of authorized take-home weapons must;
- Be empty of all explosive projectiles.
- Be secured by a lockable cable loop and secured in a proper armored container outside the driver or passenger compartment.
- A prescribed single bullet ammunition cartridge of authorized caliber is permitted if secured in the upper pocket of an inner garment that is buttonable or sealed and not visible to the tender, fearful public.

How does this happen!?
"These striker fire weapons are nothing to fool with, and if you're around these types of weapons systems long enough, you will eventually have an unintentional duscharge."
No weapon is anything to fool with. Period. I've been around striker-fired pistols for about 35 years and somehow managed to avoid an unintentional discharge. Maybe, just maybe, it's because I understand how it works, I keep my finger off the trigger, and I don't get all rammy reholstering it. Most of them you can throw, fully loaded, against a concrete wall with zero consequences. They're among the safest designs on the market. But they're not stupid-proof.
I heard that Kim Foxx is charging him with one count of aggravated battery to himself.

This has to be the dumbest comment I've ever read. If you can't keep your finger off the trigger of any gun and can't keep your thumb break out of the trigger guard when reholstering, you need to carry a wooden gun or possibly just a sharp spoon on duty. I've carried a Glock every day for the past 17 years and it has yet to go bang when I didn't want it to and it goes bang every time I do want it to. So feel free to stick to your silly S&W or Beretta boat anchors with 12 lb triggers but this is not the gun's fault. I wonder if this will be added to the statistics of gun violence and when the protests of this latest police shooting will begin.

The merit tag doesn't work on this guy. Made all rank by score. If you count capt, then yes, he was appointed to his current position, but I wouldn't classify it as merit, as merit is a percentage of the total, Capt and Commander and up is 100% appointed. He had better than merit-he had a subject matter expert counsel him for the sergeants test. This moron should have been fired after being caught on camera high sticking bus passengers in a desperate search for an imaginary offender that shot a 015th Dist sergeant years ago. The goof sergeant who shot himself with a pen gun. Yep, only the best for merit captain!
If you want an external manual safety for any Glock pistol, Google SIDERLOCK. Without violating any Glock warranty, it replaces the trigger with a trigger which includes a cross bolt pin for both left and right handed shooters. Assume you have your Glock holstered with the SIDERLOCK in the locked position. You can unlock the Siderlock on the draw with your trigger finger and be prepared to shoot in a nanosecond.
I'm now CPD retired living out of state. I also am pleased with my laser aimers manufactured by Crimson Trace or Viridian. Get the GREEN laser because, unlike the red laser, you can see the dancing GREEN dot even in broad daylight.
It’s not the gun, it’s the person handling it.
Don’t point the weapon at anything you’re not willing to destroy or kill.
Don’t put your finger on the trigger unless you intend to fire it.
If you follow even one of these basic rules you should avoid that burning sensation and the messy cleanup.
Same thing has happened to officers with all types of weapons over the years.

So wrong, not just grammatically, but your statement all together. All of the "newbies" have been handling striker fired weapons safely since 2005 and I've seen more people with time on the job having a NEGLIGENT DISCHARGE with striker fired weapons than those newbies. Sounds like the asshat Captain was complacent with his weapon handling skills. Learn how to manipulate your weapon before handling it improperly. No one is perfect, however after 30 plus years of handling different weapon systems, safe handling and knowing the system has kept me from having a Negligent Discharge.

Nope, his leg.
why would he unholster his weapon in the car? and why would he point a pistol at any part of his own body? and why would he have his finger on the trigger at any time unless he was ready to fire?
FYI, the Tact Teams in 007 were given a choice to stay or go...it was already known that most were either drinking or gambling buddies with Bubblehead and had major gambling debts. I worked in 008 and knew most of 007 Tact. It is sad that you all fell into Bubblehead's trap and followed him down the vice sewer. The good ones stayed on Tact and the garbage left.....very simple. Go visit Bubblehead in the nursing home when you can, he needs some money to get out of his BINGO debts!
Or maybe they didn't want to get indicted from the stupid and illegal shit he did and likely still does. You don't get 20 POs and 2 Sgts leaving tact because they just suddenly didn't want to make arrests. That indicates a problem with the Lt. The teams that were left were mostly locking people up for DOPW, reckless conduct because they ran into the street, a pinch of weed, or gang contact parole violations. No stellar police work being done by those who stayed. The people on the watches were doing the search warrants and bringing in the guns. You don't need jeans and hoodies to get good arrests in Englewood. And you don't need to give in to the pressure from a roided out oompa loompa with an unbelievable ego to go out and get some numbers. Fuck numbers and fuck EO. He's a liability, as he just proved by shooting himself... which has nothing to do with the type of weapon, and everything to do with the carelessness and stupidity of the person holding it.
