How Many?

Anyone have the attendance totals for the Entrance Exam this past weekend? Did all those text messages and Barb West phone calls work?

Because we heard they didn't and the total number is the lowest ever for an exam that used to be held at the (in various years) the United Center, the Merchandise Mart, and (?) McCormick Place.

Theother strong rumor is the Academy is going to go into hibernation mode - not because Rahm filled the "thousand" he promised, but because there isn't any interest in the job. All you kids who just got hired, get used to being the bottom in seniority for a while.

SOUNDS like great new for all of us.

Economic 102 PAY to LOW if nobody applies for job.

Yep FOP the City will be over a barrel.
Im kinda thinking maybe we should jump on this consent decree and let crime soar.

My son is gonna be a computer coder, making a ton of cash money that would make Pregwinkle happy to tax— but too bad so sad dog breath— he is moving out of state and not taking this shit job that old dad got sucked into— fucking job stole my soul. But just go to cook county jail for your recruitment efforts. Traffic and misdemeanor court will do, having a background with a bunch of dismissed cases should be no problem for new hires

Guess not that many people want to be "The Change ".

Or roadkill.

Not even for a $73K job.

Maybe instead of looking at consent decrees that make the job more difficult and dangerous, they ought to be looking at making it more attractive.

Chicago’s antiquated forced residency requirement is a huge killer to get people to apply for this job. With the constant attack on the police making it very undesirable, forcing residency doesn’t help and will drive outside applicants away and to other departments that don’t force it. At the very least lift residency after 5 or 10 years of service. The city better start making this job more desirable though pay, benefits, pension etc. So many people have went to other departments because of the residency and many current POs have left because of it.

Laura Ingraham had a segment just earlier tonight touching on the very same phenomenon.

It seems police departments hiring around the country have experienced a drop of roughly 2/3rds of applicants. The report cited the usual reasons why anyone with even a room temperature IQ is shying away from becoming a cop these days. Hell, New Orleans has +/- 900 openings for officers that they can’t fill.

For most, being a cop used to be a calling. A profession to be proud of as you knew you had the opportunity daily to make a positive change in someone’s life. The uniform was respected by most and, when called upon, feared by truly bee-a-dee motherfuckers who knew what time it was when we came looking for them.

Not any more.

The young bucks that can’t seem to get it through their thick skulls that it’s Game Over for proactive policing are living on borrowed time. See the forest for the trees, people. This is no longer a calling or vocation, IT IS A JOB.

RIP Proactive Policing.

Gee, maybe they should raise the pay commensurate with the risk.
What other job do you get fined, judgements, of 50, 75, 100,000.00?
Oh yeah, pro sports.
Paid like policemen and fined like football stars.
Not to mention the risk of imprisonment if it suits the politics of the times.
Only an idiot would take this job now.

I took the test twice in the 80's. Once at Lane, I think it was August, 1985. People lined up around the building, thousands. You'd think with the money they pay us, there would be interest in the job until you realize, you're the enemy and the progressive public hates us and sides with the criminals. No matter. 20 and out is all that matters now.

This shouldn’t have anyone scratching their heads. The politicians created the perfect storm for lack of interest in being a Chicago Police Officer. Police are treated like garbage, go many years without a raise/contract and then the destruction of the pension fund on top of it. Then force residency too. No thanks. Theirs plenty of departments outside Chicago to go to and you can reside anywhere. At this point the only thing Chicago can do to attract a larger qualified applicant pool is to lift residency. If not they better raise the pay dramatically.

I know of at least 4 of the new guys on the watch that are actively testing and waiting to get hired in the suburbs due to the sole fact that they dont want to live here and just took the job to get a little experience before moving on. The only people that dont care about the residency are the people that grew up in the city and this is all they know. Theses new kids coming up dont want to be told anything, let alone where they have to live and the older canidates with familys know better than to move here. I know we all knew we had to live here when we got hired but times have changed and the city has to find ways to hire qualified people and this is holding them back. It has to be addressed sooner than later.

Why not take the Job?

Because when you factor in what comes with that oh so coveted 75K a year starting salary you soon see how that's just a number. Being forced to live in Chicago costs money plain and simple if you don't want to live in the ghetto. Going on 2 years CPD. Came over from Cook County. Although I was making "LESS" money at county on paper i was actually making more in the long run!!!! It blows peoples minds when i tell them that. Going from living in the burbs to the city is crippling. Everything from the price of gas to home taxes. The only ones who don't notice this are those 30 year olds still living in mommies basement. To them yeah 75K a year is great!!! Chicago nickel and dimes you at every turn. Its sickening. It's hard to talk someone into wanting to move to a place with fixer upper houses starting at 300K when 300K gets you a gorgeous place in some burbs. 10K a year taxes vs 5K. It's only going to get worse. Taxwinkle when she gets Mayor will need to find new revenue streams. Middle class will bear the load again

Don't take the job kidos. If you do, the dept will throw you under the bus or put you in a trick bag. You will be forced to live in expensive sketchy areas where copers pay high taxes and pay high private school tuition like idiots. While your house and car insurance goes up every year because of Chicago zip code ins pay outs and accidents.
Once on the job, the comamnders will instruct supervisors to force you for activity even though quotas are against the law in IL. You will be threatened to be on midnights or bounce cars for refusing, yet the stripper co-workers will work days or 2nd watch without activity or seniority, some will work caps for decades. You will not.
You will have to fight mentals with knives without weapons as they are very limited in use as a defense. You will respond to 40 percent of mental calls and no CIT officers available, the back up is less as this is a trick bag for every officer on scene proven by past copa (not law enfrocement certified) investigations.
Once you past 5 years of trick bags and bus runs overs, you will take promotional exams, which you will pass...but cheaters in units (study groups with answers) and lietenants (subject matter test creators with answers) will pass your number. Hold on, if you wait your turn after 3-5 years more on the list...merit (political appointed brown nosers) picks will pass you. You will miss your promotions due to cheating and political appointments.
Then, the next thing is tac, but you don't test for it, just violate civil rights as a condition. SUpervisors will brain wash you that they will cover your liabilities and court expenses, and will sit with you in civil court and criminal court. You will do this while there are body, car, and pod cameras rolling in 1080p and zoom hd. Plus the shit head recording on thier stolen apple cells positng you on fb live or YouTube.
If you did not get sued, imprisoned, disabled, avoid taxes, or filed for chapter 14,you have reached 32 years. You will be compensated only at 80% retirement vs. 25years at 80% like other competitive depts.Congrats! You have made it only if you took the job at 30 years old. If you took it at 21-27, your fuked.70k after income and fed taxes and cost of ilving in the city is like 40k. All in all, not worth it. But be my guest, increase my senority.

Do you really think Chicago is the only department that has good pay and benefits? Are you kidding? They are all competitive. Many have better health care. They also have overtime too. The one thing other departments don’t have that Chicago does is the terrible treatment of their police officers and the ridiculous forced residency. Other departments also don’t hire every idiot that applies.

Too many snowflakes out there and liberal peer pressure to take a $70 k job when it goes against everything a chickentender was taught in public skrool. Then there’s the 21st Century model that has a community reflection standard to meet.

Construction for that $95 mil new Academy (to be renamed to reflect the Change) won’t be mothballed, even if Burke drew up the plans for the current academy property.
Build it and they will come...or not.

When I joined the force you were told if you did not make arrests, you were derelict of duty. Now it's the opposite, they tell you not to chase, not to arrest, and the State refuses to prosecute. You have no mission, law enforcement is no longer, tell everyone to stay away from the job. If the police are not doing their job anymore, who is BLM going to blame.

My younger son played baseball, football and went into the Marines. A while back he asked me about coming on the job, naturally I discouraged him. I took out a second mortgage and told him to go to law school which he did. He's an attorney in Bolder Col in a law firm. The money was worth every penny. The older son is good with his hands and is in the construction. The family helped him start up a company and he's in Texas rebuilding homes that were destroyed during the hurricane. My ex-partner sent his son to Chief School five years ago and he's doing great. Do whatever you have too. Keep you kids and family members off this job.

Considering how looked down upon policing is, and how much millennials and Generation Z hate he police, why would most of them ever even consider the job?

Many of the people within this age group don’t want to be tied down to a career which limits their ability to investigate jobs in other cities after gathering some experience. Most of them don’t want to buy a house, and would rather rent since it’s easier to pick up and move. That’s part of the reason for the apartment explosion downtown.

Add in a great economy, and the fact that these kids expect to be upper management within a much shorter period of time than CPD would allow, if you even had the clout to get there. There’s just no benefit to them to even consider this job.

People on this job act like $100k is a ton of money, but many of these kids get out of school and make that within a couple years, if not right away. The ONLY real benefit to this job is the pension. If that ever went bye-bye, I think you’d lose at least 50% of the already abysmal entrance exam takers.

They are so stupid and living in the past. Chicago’s forced residency is the number one complaint I hear from people interested in law enforcement. They laugh and say “no way am i moving to Chicago” In today’s day and age new police officers do not want to be forced to live in a certain area. Many Chicago Police Officers have left for others departments because of residency. I personally know of 4 that left this year and residency was the reason. Just imagine how terrible the applicant pool will be if we get Preckwinkle or Lightfoot as mayor? The only chance then would be to lift residency.

Here in lies the problem Sport. 10 years ago you graduated with that underwater basketweaving degree or maybe it was the niche liberal arts degree. Yes THOSE DEGREE HOLDERS are serving lattes at starbucks with those oh so coveted Masters Degrees. I love it. Sitting there serving espresso trying to figure out how to pay them student loans but hey a masters in womans studies. I talked my daughter off the ledge from one of those liberal BS degrees. Got her into nursing. 2 year degree. Hired 3 MONTHS after graduation for 60K. Did a online 1 year program to get the bachelors. She jumped to 75K.

Guys and gals do your children a real service stop this "follow your dreams sweetie" stuff and letting them get these Degrees that hold ZERO VALUE in today's world. Take a good hard look at the job market, future job projections, ect.....

People in healthcare and the trades are making $$$$$ money right now because years of kids "following dreams" has left the market dry for hard middle class workers.

I know 7 people in the last year that came on the job within the last 2 years. Most were in their 30’sand the resin they came in was the money. Don’t know one that was making 50,000 most were in a dead end job making 30 to 40K
Not one came on to be the police. If you come on after 30 you don’t want to be the police, but for the paycheck
Of course that’s excluding people who have taken the test previously and for reasons weren’t hired
Tests have been given annually for a long time and if you didn’t take one for 10 or more years you really didn’t want to be the police. Took 10 to 15 years to decide this is what you always wanted to do
Years ago tests were given every 3-5 years and lists were taken down before everyone was called

Old Retired Guy Here, Again !!! I know the times now, are totally different. This post is only a reflection of my service on the CPD. It is "Not" meant as a endorsement for a CPD career.
The Chicago Police Department Was The Best Thing That Ever Happened To Me !!!
I met and worked with great people. Had the time of my life. Worked many, many, part time jobs Met great people, there also. Never let all the negatives of the job, keep me from having a Great Day.
Yes, I always worked the street. Different districts and units. Yes, just a patrolmen.

Ditto. It’s a shame these new guys will never get to know the job like it used to be when guys actually wanted to come to work and loved the job. Guys didn’t want to work inside, but enjoyed being on the street. No more , what a shame

Why not take the job? Pay and benefits are good, and overtime will be plenty cause less people want the job. How is 100k a year with overtime a bad deal to these stupid college kids nowadays? They're not getting that kind of money with their useless liberal arts degrees.
Adapt to the current reality, which is no activity, and collect the paychecks. It's hard to get in trouble when you do zero. Every potential call that might go south, call a supervisor to the scene, and wait for instructions. Hands off policy on every minority, and not seeing anything in the ghetto, will get you a nice, easy career. Retired after 23yrs, and recently moved to Tennessee. Take the job kids.

You know what the problem with residency is? When you can’t have something, you want it. You want to be able to make the choice
To prove my point, I am retired and live on the far northwest side of Chicago. The area is loaded with retired fire and police. I mean loaded In the 2 or 3 blocks around me there must be 5 to 29 retired fire and police that gave nothing or shall I saw are not required to reside in Chicago and they are all here. Can leave tomorrow and are still here. You would be shocked at the number of retirees that remain in Chicago. Wish the pension board would give those statistics

If you are incompetent and lazy this is the job for you. 72k to ride around all day and not do jack. Seems to me a high percentage of new hires are like that. If you are a cps grad even better. Let’s be honest though, the joke is not on them. It’s on the good cops and tax paying citizens of Chicago.

15$ an Hour 10 years ago I graduated college

Proudest moment ever seeing my daughter buy her first house while her high school best friend still lives at MOMMIES slinging lattes working on that Masters in some dead field with no job outlook. Go get em darling!!!!

Yes!!!! Preach it brother!!!! The day will soon come when colleges can stuff their liberal arts programs up their asses!!!!

want to make 100 k? go in the trades. our unions are paying for tv commercials and other outreach begging for applicants. im semi retired now, if i work a summer its an extra 60-70 k on top of the pension. guys at trump tower were making 300 k when the building went up. great medical and pensions no politician can touch. i applied cpd in early 70s and while waiting fell into an apprenticeship. kids all went to private schools and colleges, lived in nice areas and saved mucho dinero. baby boomers are all headed out the back door now and there is a huge nationwide shortage of skilled tradesmen. huge shortage. the only ones taking advantage of it are the flood of immigrants happy to make 50+ per hour and cadillac bennies. if you are union the union provides all your expensive training free plus great legal representation. its hard and the weather here sux and you have to go to were the work is but its honest work with most of my freinds pulling down 8000.00 month pension and health care for life. loved when working in the loop the looks we would get from the snow flake one suit sidneys working the mail room for peanuts but he had a suit so he thought he was a superior being lol. most guys develop skills that allow them to have a good cash side gig too. seeing what these communists have done to our fine city and police dept i dont think police work is a safe option anymore.
