ISP Trooper Killed
- An Illinois state trooper who was heading home for the night in his squad car but pulled over to help at an accident scene was struck and killed by a vehicle Saturday afternoon in the north suburbs, police said.
Trooper Christopher Lambert, 34, stopped to help at a three-car crash in the northbound lanes on I-294 near Willow Road in Glenview, Illinois State Police Director Leo P. Schmitz said at a news conference.
Lambert, a five-year veteran, positioned his car in the lefthand lanes to protect the people involved but he was struck by a passing vehicle at 4:43 p.m., Schmitz said.
Lambert was given CPR by an off-duty nurse at the scene and was taken to Glenbrook Hospital in Glenview where he died at 7:24 p.m., Schmitz said.

Who is the brain dead idiot, approaching a 3 car crash, plus the trooper car on scene with his light activated so that's 4 motionless cars.. Driving fast enough in a big fucking hurry to strike a human being??
It's unbelievable. I drive around 008 everyday and encounter people who have zero business owning a license and a car. Driving is a privilege, not in this state though. Face it, our politicians have failed us. Everything is about money.
Too sad for words.
May G-d bless Trooper Lambert, his family, his colleagues, and all who loved this brave servant.
What a sad and unnecessary loss for all of us who lived under his protection.
Rest in Peace our brother
And also killed was a Birmingham, AL police sergeant; critically wounded was another officer. This is starting out as a terrible year.
I'm heartbroken....RIP Trooper
Several media sources claims both accidents were due to the light slippery snow. I believe the cause is more like "TOO FAST FOR CONDITIONS". The expressways and tollways are out of control. Cars routinely passing you in excess of 100 mph and due to the state being broke from corruption - you hardly ever see a state trooper enforcing traffic laws. Truly a shame and more will citizens and troopers are likely to die as a result of this.
RIP, Trooper. I am so sorry for your coworkers, friends and family.
But sorrow doesn't cut it. I am angry. There have been far too many officers injured and killed recently on the road -- and pardon this old timer's rant but I think the very equipment that was supposed to make patrol vehicles more visible is significantly (and fatally) impairing real visibility.
I'm old enough to remember the Mars lights -- and the Federal Twin Sonics -- and we thought they were cool in the day. The rotating gumballs got a lot of jokes but they painted an area with light. Now we have extraordinarily bright flashing strobe lights that seem to be more of a distraction than a help (like a moth to a flame). Approach them and your eyes are overwhelmed and confused, perhaps delaying reaction times. Unmarked? I was in a trooper friend's and the Fireball "Kojak light" was been replaced by an indoor light show that is simply blinding. I have no clue how you can safely drive in one of those vehicles.
As older readers know, once a cop, always a cop. So early this morning here in Florida I saw an officer who had a speeder pulled over. He left the customary safety zone where he positioned his squad but the light show at the scene was blinding. I paid particular note of the driver's side door area of the patrol car. The lighting distracted attention away from that one critical area and it was "the darkest part" of the scene. At least in the old days the gumballs painted an area with light. Coolness doesn't always mean safer.
I'm up for going back to the old style lights. Yes, I know the new ones are lower maintenance but they may not be as safe. We lose too many officers and I don't think it's always the fault of the drivers. Maybe the very light show that was meant to make patrol vehicles more visible is actually decreasing real visibility. We can't keep losing people. We did not have this many accidents involving officers at the scene "back in the day" and we had a lot more drunks on the road then.
Flashing lights! Cars crumpled on the side of the road! And your ass "still" speeds by with no regard for other's safety?! I don't know which is worse in this situation, driving while intoxicated or driving while stupid!
Good. Bless you trooper I work in 016 come in contact with the state police often nothing but a professional first rate police agency
RIP Trooper Lambert......God Rest your Soul.......
RIP Troop.
RIP Trooper
Condolences to the family and his ISP family.
heart dropped when saw the headline,, relative works that stretch of 294 ,, he
says speeders drive 75-85,, too many to catch , worse when he stops someone ,
passing cars don't move over to next lane,, being shorthanded doesn't help ,,
careful when driving 294
He was on his way home, could have just called it in, but didn’t. His calling was to help others, so he stopped to do just that. I have always admired the state police. Most work alone on stretches of highway where at times, help is a long way off. God bless you and your family sir.
Rest now sir. To everyone else...slow the F down and pay attention. A car is a 2 ton weapon waiting to kill someone.
Rest In Peace Sir
God bless you and your family! RIP
Rest In Peace brother
Blessed are the peace keepers.
That part of 294 is truly the Illinois Autobahn.
Another Trooper was killed in that vincinity by a speeding driver about 5 years ago. Burned alive in his car.
God bless Trooper Christopher Lambert and his family. RIP Trooper.
To all the men and women of CPD,
Thank you for your support early this morning.
We love you and be safe.
JP
Very sad. Prayers for he and family, especially little girl who will live with a huge hole in her heart. And it should not have happened. Some of the worst driving is on the tollways and yesterday was no exception. Reckless, careless morons in abundance yesterday. Condolences to the group at Butterfield and Lloyd who I often see at coffee on may way to work. Good guys all.
“Never get out of the boat” or your car while off duty.
Just call it in and stay safe. Your family needs you more than these
mostly ungrateful police hating strangers.

R.I.P. Brother!
No words, just prayers.

Heartbreaking
God Bless you Trooper. May you R.I.P. Prayers to your family.
Too damn bad the public can't just pay more attention while driving. It's a 1/2 ton mass you are moving at 70+ mph. KEEP IT UNDER CONTROL
GOD reserves a spot in heaven for first responders. There's is excuse for this death. That person should be charged accordingly. Rest in peace brother, we'll keep the watch.
10:38am. That was my friends son, ISP Trooper James Sauter, 28 years old and on the force for four years. He was hit, while sitting in his cruiser by a tractor trailer whose driver fell asleep at the wheel. The driver was cited for several felony commercial vehicle violations and served just two years in prison. He's out of prison now, living his life, and Jim is a memory who will never be forgotten by his family and friends. RIP Jim and Trooper Lambert.
To our CPD brothers & sisters-
Thank you for your continued support, especially in this most difficult and trying time.
Your Department is always there in time of need.
ISP M/Sgt.
I was on I-53 yesterday in the snow, the road was slick as hell, and people were still going over 70. I could not wait to get off of it - it felt like someone would spin out and get killed the next minute.
R.I.P Trooper, prayers to his family as well. I hope my gut feeling is wrong, but I am thinking he may have been the trooper Inwould see every morning in the coffee shop. I really hope I'm wrong, but I have that sickening sinking feeling.
Very sad and tragic. RIP ISP TROOPER LAMBERT. May GOD welcome you into his open arms and grant you eteral peace.
BTW, ISP displayed and showed a tremendous amount of support to our recently departed CPD MEMBERS at the procession and funeral services. ISP Is family, very sorry for your loss.
2 hours before Trooper Lambert was killed my wife and I were on 294 N.B. as we approached Willow Rd. I noticed that the road salt was taking effect and there was water and slush on the pavement but beneath all that was " black ice." I was doing 40 mph due to conditions and morons most likely on cell phones, eating, drinking and who knows what else were passing me completely oblivious to the road conditions. I got off at the next exit in fear of being hit by one of these morons, they refused to slow down. And because of their irresponsible behavior a young Trooper paid with his life. God Bless Trooper Lambert his wife child and family. Once again penalties for traffic violations are not severe enough to prevent further tragedies. ♠️
yeah and the police hating and hopefully soon-to-be out of business Sun-Times buried this story way down below in their online Sunday front page this morning. fucking bastards... it was even below a legal marijuana story and some asskiss JB pritzker bullshit story. At least the fib Trib had it as their lead story. RIP trooper. Sad...
Too many dying protecting us.
Big thanks to all in blue with sincere prayers God and angels protect you every moment.
Travel from Chicago to Milwaukee on numerous occasions to visit a daughter who lives there. The stretch of the tollway from O’Hare to the Wisconsin state line is totally out of control. If you are not doing at least 80 to 85 you become the hazard. Amazing there are not many more accidents with fatalities on that stretch. I’m sure the State Police are short handed just as many other Departments are. Condolences
to the family of the deceased trooper.

I am one of those Troops at the 7-11. Feel free to stop on over and have a convo with us. It’s the only down time we get during the day usually.

I was Jim’s friend and teammate on evenings on 355 before he left for air ops. Miss him to this day. God bless both Jim and Chris.
The tollway is the wild west for asshole drivers. They pay the toll and think that gives them the right to drive like *uckers. This upsets me greatly. RIP Trooper.

Trooper James Sauter. He was my nephew. I retired from CPD last 15 February. He was called for both the city and the state at the same time. I told him to go with the state, it was a better job. Will regret it until the day I die.
OFF TOPIC
HEY special ED what you gonna do with those few thosand feet of extra office space at the closed courts ?
Im guessing YOU AINT even thought about it.
Dont worry its only real estate and cost money to heat and have power.
YOU also might not know the City of chicago owns those building area look it up Executive.
May be put them mission team in.
Give the homicide guys space so they can actual have files.
Put the internet guys in an area made for internet.
Stick the diaper dicks way on the other side so they can interview those annoying domestic victims.
OR even put more locker you have them at the storage warehouse if you did not know that either.
Rest In Peace Trooper Lambert. May God guide you to his kingdom and watch over your family! CPD RETIRED
Let us not forget Trooper John Kugelman (Sgt) who was murdered at a roadblock by a speeding car trying to outrun the police and didn't even stop.
May Trooper Lambert eternally rest in the peace of the Lord and may the perpetual light shine upon him. What a terrible loss of a fine young policeman.
The jane adams is like the autobahn in germany since the construction was completed. The only place I ever see troopers pulling anyone over is by the woodfield mall exchange-- rt 53. 294 is no different. What a dangerous job, pulling people over to the shoulder and getting passed by bozos doing 80-90 miles an hour. RIP trooper, our prayers go out to you and your family as the law enforcement community again suffers another tragic loss.
Another great loss for us. RIP.
Prayers and peace to the ISP troopers family. A tragedy that should not have happened.
Maybe it's time to reduce the speed limits on all our roadways.......go back to 55.......on the stretches where it is 65 or some even 75, cars are doing 10+ miles over that, even in hazardous conditions such as were out last evening. And if you drive the speed limit, there is always that car/truck/SUV behind you, right on your tail, pushing YOU to speed up. It's getting insane. And when you add in distractions such as phones, GPS maps, texting, snow, sleet, rain, tired long haul truckers, it's just another tragedy waiting to happen. Not to mention that our vehicles are not as body-friendly in crashes.....yes, we have air bags, and seat belts, but so much of any new vehicle of any kind is plastic, no longer steel which did protect the body inside in the vehicle better.
Most people driving nowadays are on 20-35 mile long trips, whether to work or pleasure......so at 55 MPH that's about a half-hour, at 65 MPH that's about 25 minutes......is 5 minutes worth your life?
God bless Trooper Lambert and his family.

Do not put that burden or blame on yourself, it is not your fault. 99% of CPD in similar situation would of told him to take the state job.

I hear what you're saying but in this day and age, the idiots on their cell phones texting or doing Face Time are probably more dangerous than a drunk driver.
RIP Trooper Lambert.
I hate to even think it, but perhaps speed cameras would help to slow the tollway traffic down.
Given what I have seen, a few months of tickets to bozos doing 90+ would pay off the Illinois debt.
May he rest in peace a true "Trooper." As for the expressways people drive with zero regard for any laws, flying around you like your standing still, cutting everyone off rapidly, maybe it is time for that "wolfpack" mission to be used on these toll and expressways, they could hook up with sheriffs and towns surrounding the roadways a message needs to be sent! From troopers being killed, maimed injured time to reset the morons that think they can do whatever they want. Tow the dam cars if they don't have a license, excessive speed, etc.
If the asshats will not move over when a trooper has someone stopped or at least slow down stop and ticket their ass when do we say "enough?" God bless law enforcement everywhere and prayers for his family!
Rest In Peace Trooper. ISP is a class act. We (CPD) could learn so much from them. We have become a ghetto police Dept.
And again...my heart is broken.
We just lost an officer here in Arizona to a driver who was texting. It’s almost too much to bear.
Praying for all. Rest In Peace, son.
Signed,
Mom of a cop
