- Laavion Goings Jr. was out of jail only two months when the 19-year-old walked up to a bus stop about a block from his home, pulled out a gun and tried to rob a woman on the Far South Side.
But the woman had a gun too and fired first, hitting Goings in the chest, according to Chicago police. The teen ran back to his home and made it as far as a stairwell in the foyer of a building before collapsing in the 400 block of West 103rd Street.
That's where officers found him shortly before 6 a.m. Tuesday, just minutes after the shooting. He died within an hour at Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn.
Note that the Tribune has started with the "teen" description again instead of "armed offender" or something similar. And they don't mention the woman's gun was legally obtained, registered, and she had undergone training until paragraphs later. This wasn't the offender's first run in with wrong choices though:
- The teen had a record of arrests, mostly for drug charges. But last June, he was charged with attacking a sergeant and a police officer after he and his father were arrested during a narcotics raid in Englewood where the father lived, according to court records.
[...] As police escorted the younger Goings downstairs, he became “very irate, stiffened up’’ and “pushed”’ and “grabbed’’ a sergeant, the report said. Another officer got him under control and into a police car.
Was he charged?
- Goings was charged with six counts of aggravated battery to a peace officer...
Six felonies? That's fantastic. He should be in jail for .....wait a minute:
- ....but they were dropped in October after the teen pleaded guilty to a drug charge. He was given probation and released from jail in early November, just days before his 19th birthday.
Great job there Crimesha. Six felonies pled down to "dead in a justified bus stop shooting because no punishment equals no feeling of consequences."

The criminals have nothing to fear fighting the police as the SA's office will not prosecute those in a plea deal (which is every case they have ends in a plea deal) thus making it apparent to even the dullest offender that you should get your licks in while you can with no consequences. The upside (for the offender) is if the police defend themselves and happen to hurt the actively resisting offender then he uses that to bargain an even better deal and maybe even a dismissal of all charges. Why would anyone want to be the police these days?

Glad there was a happy ending to this story. Now if the police shot him there would be a big investigation with COPA, the SAO, the USAO the news media. The officer(s) would be stripped and shipped off to callback. There would be depositions and court hearings. There would be family members on the TV wailing and saying he was turning his life around until the police shot him and he was an aspiring rapper. The officer(s) would have endured 2 or 3 years of misery until they were exonerated. But still, but still, the City would drop about 2 million to the family for their "loss". This is the way to eliminate the robbery problem. Let the citizens handle it.

SSC - I take issue with you stating that the hero’s gun was “registered”. Illinois does not have a registration for firearms. We have a FOID system, but there is no system where LE or anyone can determine what firearms I own.
Fun Fact: A government-run gun registration system was made illegal by the Firearm Owners Protection act of 1986. I’m not a lawyer, but I believe states with registration in place before the law was enacted could keep their registration systems. Illinois was not one of them.

Hunter did not react verbally or physically, the suit said. The two officers allegedly brought trumped-up charges against him in order to excuse their use of force.
He was charged with two counts of resisting arrest and 12 counts of aggravated battery to a police officer, the suit said. All charges were dropped last August.
Hunter is seeking over $50,000 in compensation for mental and emotional suffering, humiliation and other losses, the suit said.

Years ago I did time in County. Richard Pryor has a skit about jails, about how black men are mistreated until he did a movie and spent time in jail. I feel the same way. Guys locked up spend time planning crimes, not doing better. They also told me the best rap to beat is a murder rap. You can make people forget details. Also most guys would rather do 3-4 years in county wearing the victim out by endless court dates, get a plea deal and go home. I made sure every guy I was in with I kept his name, sure enough most of them ended up arrested again. The system is designed that way. Ghetto payday for sure for some but others get a lenient sentence.

Cook county and the state of Illinois no longer need to pay to house him, transport him to his court dates, feed him, wash his jumpsuits, cut his hair, take him to the doctor/dentist/therapist. They won’t have to pay for his medication or his jail house diploma. They won’t have to pay for the medical bills of the jail guard he attacks, or the cell he destroys, or the inmate he stabs. There’s a reason the Cook County jail population went from 13,000 to 4,000 in 13 years, and it has to do with one thing, money. I think it’s hilarious and pathetic that Kim Foxx has been largely silent on just about everything. Then she watches TV one night and sees a special about R. It’s purely embarrassing that this is the head prosecutor of cook county and she’s tried how many cases? Less than 20 felony cases in juvenile (kangaroo) court? Only in this great justice system we have here in Chicago could this happen. I tell victims’ families hey, I can’t promise we’ll get this charged, but I’ll figure out to the best of my ability at least what happened, because we live in cook county. Our states attorney LOVES criminals and our sheriff buys them pizzas if they don’t jerk off on the jail guards. Their response is.............what? If you want real change, get your story out there, call the news, whatever and have them FOIA the case work to see that this is your offender. They try cases on the 14th floor and at the area, not in a courtroom. Most cases never even make it to 26th st due to a mixture of felony review and the values and ethical behavior of the community. Kelly was prosecuted prior to this. However, the victims accepted settlements and refused to press charges. The video depicting a man urinating on an underage girl was so dark the man could not be positively identified as Kelly who later suggested the man in the video could be his brother. His brother later demanded Kelly pay him for lying on him. As he is supposedly in jail, Kelly obviously did not pay him or settle with him. Maybe he will get what he deserves this tie around.

They’ll never admit it, but this is how the powers that be want it now. Cook county and the state of Illinois no longer need to pay to house him, transport him to his court dates, feed him, wash his jumpsuits, cut his hair, take him to the doctor/dentist/therapist. They won’t have to pay for his medication or his jail house diploma. They won’t have to pay for the medical bills of the jail guard he attacks, or the cell he destroys, or the inmate he stabs. There’s a reason the Cook County jail population went from 13,000 to 4,000 in 13 years, and it has to do with one thing, money. They’re all out on parole, probation, EM, plead down cases, nolle cases, time considered served cases. Cook county has slowly released its population back into the public. This is the new normal.

Went back to the 45 after a friend in Arizona had to shoot a home invader seven times before bad dude dropped his weapon. He was still standing when the police arrived. Offender died two days later. To all of you who would say, home owner used the wrong ammo, his shot placement wasn't right and you can't base stopping power of a cartridge on one shooting. First off, this isn't the first shooting I've heard the 9 failing miserably. Five of the seven rounds hit center mass and the others hit his left arm and hand. The ammo was critical defense plus P and the gun a 9 Glock. Over the years I've heard these types of stories, 9/380 failing to stop some asshole. If this type of caliber is what you can shoot the best with, so be it. If you can handle a larger caliber, then go for it.
This is a great story on many levels. The 19yr old thinking he's the badest of the bad, then runs into real resistance probably for the first time in his life. Then what does this pretend predator do when shot, turns and runs like a Deer. Usually if you wound a bear or any other real predator, it still has the intent to kill your ass. I'm not say these sissy punks are not dangerous, what I'm pointing out is be prepared. This lady got the drop on stupid and make the shot. We have to have our heads on swivel and be alert at all times. Practice when you can and think like a gun fighter, always looking for an angle to get the advantage. Be fetal and safe CPD.

Modern ammo is pretty much as good as it's ever been but
in this instance, the CCW Lady would have been well served
with an old "Man-Stopper" load.
Hard cast lead "Keith" slug driven at brisk to vigorous
velocities from say 900 to 1200 feet per second and designed
to crush flesh, break bones when used for "social work."

If your children are overdosing, try not being a shitty parent. Laws don't make drug users stop using. Laws don't make drug dealers stop dealing. Parents can fix all those problems, especially those who shouldn't be parents in the first place. Stop having kids you can't or won't raise properly. Stop expecting society and laws to parent for you. Teach your snowflakes instead of coddling them.
