Moron of the Month

  • A Texas man facing a felony gun charge after he allegedly threatened to kill off-duty Chicago police officers in a Bridgeport bar was ordered held on $25,000 bail Wednesday.

The Englewood District officers were attending an event at Fat Fish Bar and Grill, at 234 W. 31st St., Tuesday when the confrontation with 29-year-old Johnathan Barnes took place, Cook County prosecutors said.

Barnes, of Houston, Texas, was at the bar intoxicated when he got into an argument with the officers and was told to leave, prosecutors said. When Barnes tried to re-enter the bar, he was confronted by a police sergeant who blocked his way.

Barnes then threatened to “shoot the sergeant and to kill everyone else in the bar” while putting his hand to his pocket, prosecutors said. The sergeant grabbed Barnes’ arm and found a 9 mm handgun in Barnes’ pocket, which was later determined to have been reported stolen in Houston, prosecutors said.
Good thing he got caught in Cook County. He might have faced real prison time in Texas.

The assistant public-defender also said Barnes denied he was convicted of a crime in Louisiana.

If Barnes posts bond, he isn’t allowed to leave Illinois, Judge David Navarro ordered.

Post bond?????

Now he knows who the victims and witnesses are. The city will probably let him FOIA their info. Good God.

$25,000 bail for carrying then reaching for a stolen handgun while threatening to kill everyone in a bar. Anywhere else he would have been shot by an off duty officer not crook county. It’s open season on police officers when criminals are given low to no bonds and police are being scrutinized for using deadly force on armed offenders.

"a Bridgeport bar"??? Typical media incompetence.

The bar is two blocks east of the Illinois Central raised track line, which marks the border between Bridgeport (on the west side) and Armour Square (on the east side). Bridgeport used to be all-white - is now white, Latino, and Chinese (spilling over from Chinatown), less than 3% black. Armour Square is mostly Chinese (Chinatown being the north half), but the south half (south of the Stevenson) has been about half black for decades.

Any competent Chicago beat reporter would know that.

Just A Civilian (who knows how much things can change in two blocks)

OT. Please SCC please revive this story about Kyle Preckwinkle arrest after beating a homeless man.
The Judge tosses the case of the Man whose Mom signs his pay check.

minorities are behind bars. But then this happens:
The son of Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle is facing a misdemeanor battery charge for allegedly kicking a man and “punching him in the face several times,” court records show.
The board president was in a South Side courtroom Monday morning when her son Kyle Preckwinkle, in his early 30s, appeared before Judge Tommy Brewer in the municipal court’s Branch 34 at 51st and Wentworth, sources said.
Neither mother nor son spoke during the brief hearing.
What kind of child are you raising there Toni?

And of course, the lawyer had this to say:
Victor P. Henderson, a lawyer whose downtown firm, Henderson Adam LLC, is representing Kyle Preckwinkle, scolded a reporter for writing about the case, explaining it had nothing to do with Toni Preckwinkle, and said the paper shouldn’t be taking aim at her son, a private citizen.

“It’s a private family matter, it doesn’t involve the president, it doesn’t involve the president in her official duties — it is a private family matter.”
Right Toni. Mums the word. We won't tell a soul.

The law as enacted by the legislators of the state, says that the "victim's" state of mind is what counts. If you, the "victim" actually believe that this person is capable of making good on his threat to kill you or others, then your actions are justified. BUT, today, in Cook County, with Kim Fox as the State's Attorney, someone who selectively decides how to interpret Illinois Criminal Law statutes, I would wait until I actually see a gun coming out before I smoked him. If you have a concealed carry and you display your self-protection weapon, thus intimidating him into leaving, I believe that you could easily justify your actions by telling the police (who inevitably will be called by some SJW) exactly why you felt threatened and felt the need to prepare for a deadly encounter.

You better have a witness or witnesses to the threat and be able to demonstrate that you were in fear of your life. Another aspect to what you described, what led up to the Assault, for this person(s) to suddenly make death threats. Their going to ask if you attempted to defuse the altercation, verbally or attempt to take leave of the area. Personally, I would draw my weapon (keeping at my side) and attempt to back away from this individual. I investigated one shooting involving an offender who did not have a gun. He said he had a gun and attempted to rob someone who really had a gun. There were witnesses to the Strong Armed Robbery and the shooting was justified.

hey sir thanx for the comprehensive response ! yes i admit that in my original post i should've added a few more hypothetical details... to expand my original question, let's say no witnesses or video/audio of the incident, and also let's say there's no room for me to easily retreat or flee...and i'd also add that before simply drawing & firing that i'd probably draw first & at least give the (potential) offender a chance to back off. Trust me, absolutely last thing i want to happen(besides him shooting me) is me having to fire. I am well aware of the potential implications (legal/monetary etc) of lethal self-defense esp in Crook.
