Good Question

  • He was initially identified by California authorities as a retired Chicago police officer. But a spokeswoman for the Chicago Police Department said Pastini was never employed by the department and was carrying a Chicago police badge that had been missing since 1978.

Carrie Braun, a spokeswoman for the Orange County Sheriff’s Department, said the metal police star recovered from Pastini’s body “appeared to be legitimate.”

It’s unclear how Pastini got the badge.

Braun said Pastini was born Jordan Isaacson and changed his name in the 1970s.
Evidently, he was quite the shit-talker, too, claiming to be both cop and criminal, a veteran of all sorts of ethnic battles between Greeks, Italians and Germans, which would put him growing up in the neighborhood of 012/013, generally speaking.

The recovered badge was reported missing in 1978 - who had it last? That might provide a starting point to see who owned it last. We can name about a dozen stars that went "missing" a week or two before some old timers retired. That might provide a hint as to how this one ended up in the hands of someone of whom there isn't any record of him being CPD.

Why the name change?
Where did he learn to fly? How did he pay?
Flying is a rather expensive pursuit for a shit-talker.
Was flying a diversion or job requirement?
Where did he work? Track that S.S. number and 1040s.

Does anyone else remember when they made the headquarters move from 11th and State to 35th and Michigan? There were records lost in the personnel unit’s computers. Some people who checked their records found that awards they were given were missing along with other info, like training attended? When they called about the problem, they were told to bring their copies of awards and certificates, and they will be added to their file! Guess any extra effort to combine the old and new systems was too much work, or too expensive?
Some of the really old records, log books, ledgers, C.O. books, etc... went to a dumpster, instead of being kept for historical research.

There are at least two supposed videos of this plane exploding before it crashes.

This one, although the dashcam appears to have an incorrect date (1/27)

But it seems to be corroborated by this one which has the correct date of 2/3

as to the comment about commercial pilots getting backround checks, a commercial pilot does not fly for airlines, tha is an atp. airline transport pilot cert. private pilots cannot fly for compensation. flight training is based on flight hours. flying his bus is probably around 1000.00 per hour. so you get a lesser commercial pilots rating so you can fly, build time and since they get paid next to nothing try to cover your expenses. they fly small freight and air taxi etc. up until the internet they flew all the checks between branch banks at night. airline transport pilots fly the swingin beef and are held to a very high standard, commercial pilot is just a stepping stone to that, or a way to fly for free for the love of the game. enjoy your peanuts.

If it has a "Hanson" hallmark on the back, it's real. Blackington didn't make the old style 5 point stars until late 90's.

2/8@9pm -The previous five point star with the detailed city seal was made by NY Stamping and Engraving. Blankinton makes the current issue. C H Hanson made the hat shield as well as the large six point "pie plate" with copper numbers.

Anyone know the star number this mystery man was carrying — and to whom the Star was assigned at that time, if anyone, when it was reported lost (stolen)?
Also. Was it 1978 when pie pan stars all were supposed to have been turned in for the new design (5-point stars, all metal, no colorful details!)? Or a different year?
