Over-Training?

Anyone want to explain why a 14-week training course for new Marine Unit officers is entering it's 40th week? And how this is causing the Unit to operate short (at least) four dive-qualified personnel during the winter months when response times are of the essence?

Does some "merit" pick not know how to swim?

You don't expect me to dive into frigid cold water?
I mean we got the latest gadgets and doodads but
cold is cold. Hopes have been dashed and egos
shattered when officers were told they were responsible
for their own hot chocolate.

I chased a guy into the lake at Oak Street beach this evening. He would hide under the ice for a bit and jump into one of the many watercrafts out on the lake this time of year. He'd boat jack the vessel and when we would get close, offender would do the bugs bunny underwater trick again. We were calling for the marine unit all along, but all we saw was cross country skiers and dog sleds on the deeply frozen body of water. How dare they train in the winter.

I can explain. Every new member of the Marine Unit must complete both the U.S. Marine Corps Amphibious Reconnaissance Course and the British Royal Marine Commando Course. They are hard as nails and in keeping with the finest traditions of the CPD.

The 1st Deputy's secretary can swim! So could the CPD officer who swam the English Channel twice. Beltran couldn't stand that someone was better than him. When you don't have clout, you gotta go.

Just keep training and enjoy your spot... Stay in your little club house and let the Coast Guard and CFD handle business.
When it gets warm -n come out and patrol Navy Pier and make yourr contacts...

No they are all having trouble figuring where lake is in relation to their current locations. They are all compass challenged. Also some issues with confusing boat controls. Heard two were allergic to sun and water.

Doesn’t matter to the new people or the ones there now. The CFD is taking over functions on the lake and river anyways. They are the darlings of public safety. Even though small, the coast guard and conservation police will control “police” functions on the water way. The fire department has been working to take over all other functions for years now adm know that this messed up situation is out there they have their additional ammo.

Now that this embarrassment is out, it is the finally blow to the unit. That unit has been constantly having their budget and manpower reduced for years. The unit is fucked now just like the SWAT unit. You make the department look bad and incompetent then they will fuck with you.

YOU SWAM AT A D-1 SCHOOL?!?!?
Nobody cares dude!!! You must 5 minutes on the job, because you still think that experience counts for something!!! If you haven’t figured it out yet, unless you know somebody, you’ll be waiting you whole career trying to get something you’re never gonna get. Just look at the command staff!!! Not one of them has any policing experience!!! Yet they’re the people calling the shots and putting THEIR people in the Marine Unit. Quit your dreamin’ and answer your radio!!!

If you don’t know how to “swim” after 14 or 40 weeks of training then you’ve got no business being in that unit.
Of course logic would tell you that non swimmers should never be selected in the first place merit or not.

Who am I kidding? When’s the last time CPD followed logic?..... especially with their merit picks.

I remember when Nial was told after tryouts for Marine unit that he wasn’t qualified.
Nial was an extremely accomplished swimmer: he’d swam Lake Michigan and The English Channel.
The media eventually got wind of this joke selection process and Nial became qualified and part of the Marine Unit.

The bottom line is swimming doesn't have shit to do with scuba diving ! Some of the fastest swimmers in this unit are the worst divers or better yet afraid to dive or have a very minimal number of dives since they've been in the unit. This unit never had any standards to speak of and the only way to make it legit is to have an outside agency instruct and follow a real public safety diver cirriculum ! They canned all the legitimate instructors who had more experience and knowledge than the current ones . As they say " Those who can do, and those who can't teach "! With all the Lt's that are eligible for Captains they need to put one in charge of this unit , instead of one who is trying to juggle the mounted and helicopter units along with this one. And 40 weeks of training with weekends off is fucking ridiculous by any standard. They started with 15 new people and are down to about 8 and washed a female out in the last week which is crazy ! She made it the whole way and they dumped her now ? I hope she lawyers up and has a great beef against the circus shes been a member of since last June !

They should train. It’s extremly hard to dive in the city water. Ask stoffregen and bucio who passed while diving. If it were up to me they would not only train here with the city for several months but I would also send them off to a few weeks to train with the coast guard divers who are highly skilled and among the best.

I seriously don't get this whole argument. Having taken scuba lessons and having gone diving, and finally decided I did not like it (especially after knowing a regular diver who died of the bends), I don't get what takes so long. Either you know what you are doing, or you don't. Not real difficult. BTW, I know a licensed pilot that was denied for the helicopter!!! Sorry, but the CPD, routinely rewrites the weighting factors to fit who "they" want to get into any spot that is open. FACT\

There is a marine unit retiree who was a Master Chief in the U.S. Navy and a Navy hardhat diver. He was the real deal and a great boat operator . There is also a current member who was a commercial diver and paramedic with a suburban Fire Dept. These two have more experience and knowledge than the current instructors, but as it goes with this unit, department and whole corrupt city a resume may as well go in the shredder !

I thought geeez this guy looks like he should be in a nursing home, he looked feeble and sort of like Monty Burns from the Simpsons. I saw him outside later taking a smoke break, and thought to myself that can't be too healthy if you're a scuba diver .
