This is a Really Really Dumb Idea
- The CTA will be adding specialty vending machines that will offer food, phone charging services and even photos starting this spring, according to officials.
At many stops on the CTA Red Line, people will be able to rent or buy cellphone charging battery packs from 35 MobileQube kiosks. Farmer’s Fridge food vending machines will be installed at four stops, offering salads, soups, sandwiches and snacks. A photo booth where people can buy photos for visas or passports, or just for fun, will be installed at the Chicago Red Line station.
If you surf assorted social media sites following a mugging, you can find all sorts of videos of yourself and your companions cowering after being relieved of your phone, wallet and other valuables....and it's free. Or maybe you'll be lucky enough to encounter this fools just funnin' on the Dan Ryan/87th Street stop:

How stupid is this!?! These things will get vandalized and cleaned out!
This works just fine at places like Union Station or Ogilvie, where you can go wash your hands before touching food and sit somewhere to eat, but along the Red/Green/etc. Line? Where do you wash your hands before touching the food? And do you just stand & eat it? There's a " no food or beverages on the train" sign, so obviously you can't eat it on the train....
These are just a few of the basic reasons why this makes no sense. I can think of a few more reasons, but I don't there's enough space on the blog to publish them all.

Oh have we got the perfect place to set up one of those machines and help the underserved dregs of society at the same time . . . Tent City at Roosevelt and Desplains! You know, the place where the city and state have allowed hundreds of homeless to claim a piece of tax payer supported land, set up a makeshift shelter and live there with no running water and no “facilities”. You know, the place where garbage is piled six feet high, there are buckets of piss and shit everywhere and hoards of rats as big as cats. The place that is infested with lice, fleas and that ever so popular flesh eating disease. The place where the local drug dealers need only pull up to the encampment, role down their window and serve from the warmth of their vehicle without all those pesky camera pods viewing their tax free business. The place where a good liberal Samaritan was punched in the head last week while dropping off food to these deserving individuals. The place where a individual was shot and left to die in the snow just two days ago. What a wonderful thing it would be if they were able to just role out of their tent in the morning, walk up to one of these machines and grab a hot cup of soup, a fresh deli sandwich and a photo for their passport so they could visit someplace warmer. We understand California is beautiful this time year.

How about spending more money on making the CTA safer? Are we still hunting for the Red Line animal that attacked a pregnant woman at the Addison stop or are all of the city’s resources concentrated on helping Subway Sammich much lover Jussie Smollett find the 2 White bodybuilders that he had to fight off at 2 am in the 20 below zero cold?
Stupid idea all around: Bums are going to shit in the photo booths and you aren’t supposed to be eating on the train anyway. Who is going to clean up the packaging mess?
No place to wash no place to go to the bathroom no food on trains, so garbage will also be all over the platform and train tracks, another insane idea no research just the payback to elected the Chicago way! Hmm since rahm is screwing the next mayor with long term contracts for the failure he put in as leaders and letting them get paid big money after he is finally gone,maybe more possible than probable this redline money grab have the contracts been vetted? These vending machines will be similar to the Divvy bikes,they will be vandalized, made inoperable and have to be replaced at the taxpayers expense.2nd Ward Alderman Hopkins pledges in his second term if elected to ,Reduce congestion on our roads by advocating for smart traffic systems.How about advocating for intelligent non corrupt City Politicians and leaders and against smart traffic management scams.How about not over developing already congested areas while offering 3 more bridges when Chicago cant maintain the ones they have. How about quit prioritizing public safety and increasing Police patrols and actually get it done.Thank You Police Officers That are required to do more and more with less and Thank You to All First Responders. If the City and County think Police Officers are the problem then why not give them all a week off at the same time with pay ? Seriously let's see how that goes.

Why not sell tourists a picture of themselves being mugged letting them purchase a copy at a vending machine as they leave an L station. Sort of like Disney attractions

I guarantee, the machines, especially the super expensive Farmer's Fridge, will only be in Lakeview along the Red Line. Those precious little millennials and yuppies are the only tools that can afford it. Mommy and daddy's money goes a long way.

AHHHH....the good old photo booths. Back in the day, many, many moons ago the CTA had these booths. It was nice for the young teenagers taking the L downtown on a date to capture the moment. Back in the days when it was safe.
Maybe now it might be useful. As the young, naive lovebirds are sitting in the booth having their picture taken, up strolls a not so nice underprivileged youth. He jumps into the booth to mug them and SNAP. Not only will you have a kodak moment that captured this special night of being mugged but also one to share with the Police.
In Tokyo, there are vending machines EVERYWHERE, taking (and providing accurate change) even 10,000 yen ($100) bills for 150 yen ($1.50) beverages, reliably dispensing customers' 9850 yen ($98.50) in change, with no concerns about safety or cash-security. Here in Chicago, you can't get change for your $5 bill at the Ventra machine, and while you buy your CTA pass, three homeless guys hoover around you while three other M1s give you the hairy-eyeball. Visit to Tokyo demonstrates Chicago is a 3rd-world city, governed by 3rd-world caliber corrupt politicians, with a 3rd-world crime-rate.

Surely many will be waiting to "toss you salad" with the felon thugs everywhere on the redline!
So how long will it take after the first food machine is installed, that it will be broken into & the food and money taken. Or the whole machine will be carried out of the platfoem.
Those salads from the machine are like $7-8 dollars.
Cuz there just ain't enough half eaten garbage littering the trains now.

Probably only works with cards and not cash. I dont see how this is any difference from selling newspapers and magazines.
