- For at least a decade, most Illinois residents who receive food stamps have been exempt from a federal law that requires them to work or risk losing their benefits.
But a proposal that would make it harder to obtain those exemptions — a move designed to encourage people to find jobs while unemployment is low — has social service agencies in Illinois, like elsewhere, worried that the poor will only plunge deeper into poverty.
Some 38 million people nationwide use the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, commonly known as SNAP, to buy groceries. Mostly, they are children, the elderly or people with disabilities.
But many other recipients — about 8 percent — do not have such disadvantages: they are considered able-bodied adults, under 50, who do not have children or other dependents. Federal law limits them to three months of food stamps during a three-year period unless they are working, volunteering or in job training for at least 80 hours a month.
No kids, no disabilities. That frees up a lot of time. So what's stopping them from working at cleaning up highways and byways if they want to eat?
- Of the 1.8 million people receiving food stamps in Illinois, about 162,000 are able-bodied adults without dependents, according to the Illinois Department of Human Services. That able-bodied group expands to some 400,000 people who enroll in SNAP in a given year as they cycle on and off the program.
And here we are, working 40 hours a week and in many cases, one of our days off, along with some volunteer work at church/school to support a functional community...and (it looks like) a couple of able bodied individuals who refuse to even do twenty hours volunteer work or get a part time job.
We're thinking bureaucrats are fearing cuts that would mean downsizing government as much as lazy assholes fear actually working. There aren't many greater motivators than hunger. If you're working, you're usually too tired to be an asshole, which means crime goes down, too.
And if you starve to death, oh well.

Don’t forget about the millions on Social Security disability who soak the system and are fully able to work. And then there is the immigrants who sponsee their elderly parents to come to our country. They wait 6 months and go to Social Security and say they can’t afford mom and dad. So Social Security puts mom and dad up in government subsidizesd senior housing and also puts them on SNAP. Mom and dad never paid a dime into Social Security yet that becomes their means of support.

He worries that 80 hours work or volunteering is too hard based on him doing 20 hours of community service in school,which he found was “a lot”. What the hell are we raisong now ? What a joke.

The people complaining the most about cuts are probably the social workers aka handlers / enablers / parasites whose social service agency depends on a lot of victims.
When I would take offenders on SSI for fake psych reasons to the hospital for their free dope, while waiting to see the doc, I'd always offer them $20 cash per hour to work on my apt buildings. Never had a one that was interested. They immediately began to manifest their fake psych disorder in front of me. As a result, I am able to mimic and fake any psych disorder other than child molestation and being a serial killer or arsonist. That's why I say mental illness is a myth. Best thing about retirement? I choose, 24/7 , who I associate with, and it's not any body on fake SSI for fake psych reasons, or any body to the left side of the bell curve

It was going to be around 2K a month until they found out I am a retired CPD copper. Then it dropped to the 400 a month. At least I now know where the other 1,600 is going. Cops are blue collar workers, and they, like this officer, believe that family is our most important obligation. It is our strength. Hopefully our children will stand on our shoulders and reach higher than we able to do.

The whole system needs to run dry for any political fix to occur. Entitlements are a sought after commodity that no one will give up. Although it’s not part of the law, it would make sense to have a lot of the folks with dependents and disabilities working, as well. Those with small children could staff a community day-care center so those with older kids can work. And even if you have a bad back or PTSD, there must be SOMETHING useful you can do. Even if it is a made-up job, like combing caterpillar fuzz two hours a day, it’s better than sitting at home watching TV and smoking pot.
I hear a lot of people - in today’s booming jobs market - complain that they can’t find work that is “meaningful”. What a load of flower fertilizer! I’ve worked at PLENTY of jobs that weren’t “meaningful” (lawn mowing, burger flipping, clerk at a convenience store, etc) before I found one that I enjoyed doing. I didn’t feel “fulfilled” by mowing lawns or flipping burgers, but the paychecks felt good, regardless.
The IL caucuses will sponsor a bill to create able-body a physical condition that sets limits for work willingness and makes forced employment an infringement on civil right.

She said half the class was there so they would not lose their "benefits". They were the ones who were always late, slept through class, and had a bad attitude. She remarked how terrible it would be to have one of those women caring for a relative in a nursing home. But they know how to work the system. I remember a Spanish-speaking women with a little boy approaching the local Social Security office. She pointed to the office and said "moolah". Teaching them young, apparently.

That's the difference. Some of us are givers, others are takers. Lately seems the takers are outnumbering the givers. Hunger is a great motivator, too bad it isn't used more often.
Sad to say, I have a relative whose healthy husband always has a problem with bosses (never HIS fault HAHA). How they get food stamps is beyond me, esp when they manage to afford smokes. Hard to keep my mouth shut.

Basically, for the low income people it's better to earn let's say $25k a year and get Midecare, shitty as it has become thanks to Obama, than earn $35k and get hit with $1000/month premiums for an insurance that covers even less and has huge deductibles.

Just a thought. I’m an older Millennial. They say there won’t be SS by the time I’m old enough to get it. That’s fine; I didn’t pay much into it. I’ve always paid my own way, pay my rent, buy my cars, maintain my own private (NOT Obamacare) insurance, etc. Here’s the BIG question: What runs out first, the SS for the people who paid for X years, or the SNAP/Sec8/welfare/insert others here?
