Death Spiral Continues
- Since the turn of the century, Illinois has been in the midst of a perfect demographic storm. Residents are leaving the state in record numbers. The number of Americans moving into Illinois has hit new lows. Net foreign immigration has fallen by half. And the number of births has dropped by more than 20 percent.
These demographic forces have all combined into a single troubling fact: Illinois is shrinking. The state has lost population five years in a row. In 2018 alone, the state lost 45,000 people, the second-biggest population drop in the country.
The accompanying graphs and charts ought to frighten any correct thinking citizen. Illinois cannot survive it, and even the influx of illegals is tapering off - foreigners don't want any part of Illinois.
And now JayBee the Hutt is talking about doubling the gas tax from nineteen cents a gallon to thirty-eight cents per gallon. We're suddenly struck with an image of gas stations sprouting up on the Indiana, Missouri and Iowa borders as big rigs fill up at one border, then drive completely across Illinois without stopping to refuel at the opposite border.
Oh wait - that's already happening.

Any word if the taxes in regards to the school system are going down given the indoctrination rate is declining. By the way, my sons are in private schools, but with all their public school friends- I usually have a sit down with them and clear up all the re-education and de-masculinity with all of them from time to time. I travel from Chicago to Missouri twice a month. I buy as little gas as I can for the trip and gas up immediately over the border. I fill the tank just before I come back, which takes care of the ride and at least a week's worth of driving in Chicago afterward.
Last week, I paid $1.99 a gallon just west of St Louis. The Chicago price at the time was around $3.00 a gallon.
(And really, with the horrible condition I-55 is in, I'd love to know where all that infrastructure repair is, that the higher Illinois gas tax supposedly funds.)
Illinois will continue its slide into the shitter. People are not leaving due to the weather. People are leaving due to the never ending increasing taxes and communist ideologies. Even in the suburbs every apartment building has turned 100% low-income. Low-income is one thing, but they are riddled with violent crime which was spread from the City. If not for these two, I would love to stay and retire here ... but unfortunately Illinois politicians don’t make it easy on the average Joe and Jane who want to live in peace and keep a respectable amount of their hard earned living. I believe the politicians want folks like me to leave.

My drivers NEVER fueled in Illinois even though they were based here.
They’d top their tanks in IA or MO, come into Illinois, get empty, reload, go back to IA or MO, re-fuel and head for the west coast.
Illinois used to have the second highest number of heavy truck registrations in the US...then Lyin’ Ryan and Blago jacked up the registration fees by almost 90%.
Now, Illinois is hanging onto fourth place by its fingernails and Indiana has rocketed up the list.
I can't wait to move, the day after I retire!

Have you noticed the price of gas jumping over the past weeks?
In my town the price was 2.74 on Thursday and 2.89 on Friday. O right, Illinois has "summer blend" which drives up the price every year.
It's also about time for the annual Whiting refinery fire/breakdown which will cause a "shortage" in this area to further increase prices.
This gas hike will really hit working class people.
Family all born here in Illinois. Three kids, grown and gone. Wife and I retired.

Have found many nice places on Zillow, with 5 to 10 acres, some with a pond, 4 beds 3 bath for around 199,999 to 265,000. Property taxes average 100 to 150 per month.
Oklahoma specialty plates run from $19 to $36.
Spoke with a friend who has a gunsmith operation in Alabama, 50 miles from the Florida border. He has 40 acres. On this he has a 5000 sq ft machine shop, and a 3000 sg ft house. He can literally hunt and fish in his backyard. Property taxes are $1400 per year.
He told me about another guy from Illinois who bought 4 or 5 acres with a pond and woods. He put a mobile home on it so he had a little get-a-way spot. Got his first property tax bill. $5.00. He went to the County Assessor as he was sure there was a mistake. Clerk said no, it was vacant land. He fessed up that he had a mobile home on it. Clerk said we don't tax those down here.
Cannot wait to see Illinois in the rear view mirror.

Since the time that Oliver Cromwell defeated my ancestors and sent Irish and Scot survivors to the colonies (1649–1652), my surviving ancestors were initially located in Maryland and Virginia. Since the time of the Louisiana Purchase (1803), the grave sites of my ancestors are located in Western Illinois near the Mississippi river and elsewhere in Illinois. Now the roots are too deep. I would leave. But where?

I was in the River North area on Friday and it looks so junky and seedy. Chicago and its metro area look like a dump.
I for one am getting out of here. The weather, crime and corruption just don't make living here appealing any longer. I'd rather look at beautiful scenery, experience better weather and not fear for my life every time I'm walking down the sidewalk. Adios Illinois.

Couldn’t agree more. Every retiree has the right to live where he chooses, not where someone on the blog says he should or shouldn’t. I for one can leave whenever I want, have maxed out on deferred so I have no reason that would force me to stay, but I do. Live on the northwest side, have great neighbors and friends and actually enjoy the city. Spend the summer on my boat at the lakefront and like the downtown area. Enjoy the restaurants and the entertainment. My choice
For anyone who wants a good read, check out "Corrupt Illinois: Patronage, Cronyism, and Criminality." If I remember correctly, Chicago is one of the only cities - if not the only one since being instituted in 1833, to have nothing but Democratic mayors. Even LA and NYC have had Republican mayors throughout their histories. Unfortunately, the Democratic Party has been highjacked by the left, which has resulted in lawlessness, race baiting and abhorrent corruption. I realize that Chicago has always been corrupt, but now the average citizen can feel the affects of its dysfunction. From abandoned store fronts in the suburbs, to broken streets all over. You never heard of the amount of crimes being committed in Lincoln Park, River North, Streeterville and the Gold Coast like you do now. These areas were always relatively safe. I think Joe Walsh is correct when he says IL has gone over the cliff and is at a point of no return.
So glad I moved to Missouri 4 years ago! I don’t miss Hellinois one tiny bit!
I did my part, while driving for UBER, picked up a ride at a suites/hotel in Manteno, asked him what he was doing in exotic rural Illinois...
Lo and behold the western state transplant was looking to buy a home and make an hour commute to work for a tech company in Chicago.
I steered him clear as quick as I could with tales of multi thousand dollar property tax bills as thanks for living in incorporated towns, and told him of many lovely properties in the Dyer region of Indiana where the state does not hate its citizens.
He seemed to be listening, I hope he did.
I'm a retired fire Lt. From a western suburb. We moved last August to Bellevue, Iowa. 3 acres, 1850sf house with 1000sf garage and the taxes will be about $3000/yr. We can leave the doors open. Don't miss IL at all.
My family was four of the 45,000, good riddance. Moved back to MT, but now the fruits and nuts from California are starting to appear.
