Bodyguard Story Gets Legs
Took the media, specifically Channel 5, most of the day to catch up:
- NBC 5 has learned of a move by Mayor-elect Lori Lightfoot to reverse decades of tradition by revamping the mayor’s Chicago Police bodyguard unit, adding representatives from federal agencies and other law enforcement agencies.
At issue, the mayor-elect’s intention to build a new protective detail, reportedly headed by former U.S. Marshal Jim Smith. The unit would include former federal marshals and members of other departments outside Chicago.
FOP is expressing reluctance:
- “I am not in favor of taking away our jobs and replacing them with someone,” FOP President Kevin Graham told NBC 5. “For as long as we have had a bodyguard detail for the mayor, Chicago police officers have been committed to making sure the mayor and those around him or her are safe.”
A police source told NBC 5 that the mayor-elect has been told by present and former high-ranking department members that the proposal creates a myriad of issues, not the least of which are the fact that outside officers might not be fully indemnified by the city of Chicago, and that such a unit raises question about state certification.
Not to mention who's going to pay for it all.
And what does this mean to the fixed detail in 014? Rahm had six or eight officers from 019 with a sergeant in four or more cars around his house 24/7....and Rahm was hardly ever there. He was either in DC (most weekends) or at his secret hideout/condo in 012 near Van Buren and Green which the media never seemed to catch onto.

It's great the union can speak up about an insignificant police detail that has no bearing on 99% of the rest of the department but they can't speak up when Exempts like Johnson twin #2 and Escamerit make the news for stealing. They should have held a press conference about how those two morons are the prime examples of why the CPD has turned into a garbage dump thanks to the corrupt merit process.
And don't give me any of that Chicken Little bullshit either about how getting rid of the bodyguard detail can lead to other units being taken over by private security. Fuck it, let her replace SWAT and the Marine unit with Ex-Green Berets and Navy Seals for all I care. She said there needs to be more economical investment & support for youth and said many crimes are committed by people who feel they are left out, and they need to bring resources to them.
These are the same tired old lines that the past and present Progressive Democrats have been pushing for eons. They have destroyed all of the major metropolitan centers in this country with their socialist ideology. Major cities like San Francisco, Los Angeles, Seattle, Portland, NYC, Baltimore and a host of others are in chaos with crimes, with the homeless and illegal immigrants because they allow this and cater to this behavior. The Dems. just want to squeeze the taxpayers and throw our money to them. The same is true for Chicago, just throw more money at the problem which has never worked. Medical personnel,first responders, soldiers know you have to stop the bleeding first to save a trauma victim. The analogy to Chicago is you have to get the shooters/killers, gangs, drug dealers into prison with extremely long and harsh sentences. Do this and the shootings will stop. No mercy. So far probation upon probation, early parole, peace march after peace march, prayer-ins and restorative justice has not worked. When you stop the bleeding you can start to rehab the patient. I think Lightfoot has already set the tone for the next four years, more of the same Democrat one party smoke and mirrors.

Something that was pointed out to me is that by having a security detail that was comprised of outsiders it would make it harder for CPD to have insider knowledge of what was happening in her administration or having dirt on her. An interesting notion indeed.

The Public needs to realize that every one of those plainclothes personal body servants to a Mayor gets Sergeant’s pay, and the head gets Commander’s pay and retires with a Gold Braid pension, which these days is a over $120,000.00 for the rest of their lives! He started his career as a lock-up aide, then became a Patroll Officer, well known as a Do Nothing. They hid him in Mass Transit, until Lil Dick was annointed, then he went to become one of Daley’s servants, receiving Sgt’s pay, though never promoted to the rank of Sgt. Bridgeport Sam is now retired with a Commander’s Pension. There was no Exam or explanation for assignment to the Mayor’s Detail; sort of like Merit Promotions: It Just Happens! Duties include, taking the Mayor’s kids to school, taking the wifey shopping, opening doors, and acting like you’d take a bullet for the Mayor, who loves to eat at exclusive French restaurants. NBC 5 should look into something else, too. While we did cop on a roof the other day, fire department was pimped out to collect also. Our cause (special olympics) was a worthy one. The fire guys and gals told us they were collecting for the survive alive house. They said they felt awkward because the survive house is 1- taxpayer funded/city property and 2- funded by a whole lot of corporate donors. We all had a good laugh at the city’s shadiness and wondered whose summer vacation will be funded with the anonymous cash income.

The City abolished the Special Police program a year or 2 ago. Bugsy had 2 or 3 of his guys commissioned that worked for his Finance Committee. The hospitals, universities, factories.... had hundreds of guards that were commissioned as special police. Again, the special police program has been discontinued. All those that had special police commissions lost them and were forced to register with the State as armed or unarmed security guards. So, no, the private security bodyguards will not be able to be commissioned as Chicago Special Police Officers.
This move by Lori Lightfoot proves that she is legit. By having the feds as part of her bodyguard detail, she must walk a straight line because they are not going to look the other way when she get involved in any mischief. I respect her more and more everyday. As for the ones who get dumped out of the detail “welcome back to patrol, you are with us.”

Monday comes the big celebration and the beginning of Lightfoot's reform of Chicago. The honeymoon will be over by November. By then the body count will be 500+, the Aldermen will be in revolt, calls for more taxes, issues with the Consent Degree, continued failure of the corrupt State's Attorney's Office to prosecute, no new police contract, fire Special Ed - leaving Department in continued state of flux (worst than now) and on and on.

I don't care who they are and where they retired from. No auto weapons for them.Also, since they are retired feds, no uniform allowance, they already have lots of suits and trench coats.

Let's face it, cpd can't keep a secret and love to spread rumors. The mayor does not want a bunch of big mouths surrounding her every move. Realize when the city does the budget, they count the total salary plus overtime of the 24 member mayors detail. So let's say the majors detail budget is lined at $3 million per year. That's what she can spend on her new detail. Whether that math makes sense to you or not, that's the way they do it.
More importantly, the mayor wants cpd to be cops on the street, where they should be. Let's hope now that she hires someone honest and intelligent enough to see through the bullshit inside desk jobs that exist for no valid reason and puts those slugs back on the street. And all the unnecessary exempt positions that need to go - knock them back down to their rank and hit the street.
Lightfoot is not doing this as a way to cut waste and bring efficiency to the department. She is doing this because she does not like the police. How some of you people can’t see that is simply stunning. You applaud her for ending a cake detail for these coppers but do you really think that these coppers are headed to the streets?! Lori Lightfoot has just told all of CPD to their faces that she distrusts and don't respect you. This is the beginning and those of you "running and gunning", you know doing your jobs, she is foaming at the mouth waiting for you to fuck up so she can make an example out of you and show the city of Chicago that their police department is exactly what shevalways thought a corrupt, racist, and unreliable bozos. God forbid spmething does happen to her and she only has paper pushing feds to back her up and not the street war proven CPD officers she shits on and hates. Maybe think about how she views you or treats you with your contracts and pension fund when little assholes are robbing people downtown, active shooter downtown or by her home in 014.

Let's face it, cpd can't keep a secret and love to spread rumors. The mayor does not want a bunch of big mouths surrounding her every move. Realize when the city does the budget, they count the total salary plus overtime of the 24 member mayors detail. So let's say the majors detail budget is lined at $3 million per year. That's what she can spend on her new detail. Whether that math makes sense to you or not, that's the way they do it.
More importantly, the mayor wants cpd to be cops on the street, where they should be. Let's hope now that she hires someone honest and intelligent enough to see through the bullshit inside desk jobs that exist for no valid reason and puts those slugs back on the street. And all the unnecessary exempt positions that need to go - knock them back down to their rank and hit the street.

I applaud Lightfoot for ridding city hall of this huge financial drain...a bunch of patrolmen making sgt.'s pay, a patrolman 'commander' who draws an exempt pension from the position after 4 years? It's outrageous. If the residents of Chicago knew how much of their tax dollars are wasted within the CPD on all the overstocked 'deputy chiefs' and 'out of grade' pay hucksters, they'd be outraged!
Why can’t a retired cop with IROCC authorization provide security for the mayor?
Because if you read the letter that comes with your annual renewal it tells you that you are NOT the police, you have no police powers or authority, and no indemnification and that the firearm is only for your personal protection.
If she wants a security guard detail, OK but that is all they are, If they are retired they still have no police powers per IROCC. And her vehicle should have no police radio or emergency lights and they must obey all traffic laws. Even if they are a private security company who are PSD trained, They are still NOT the police just security guards.
Smith owns Silver Star Security. Employees are recently discharged military guys.
If she decides on non-police security, when she goes into a library, school, CTA station, park or one of those stupid establishments with a no gun sign, do her bodyguards have to stay outside?

Mayor Lightfoot must end exempt rank immediately if she wants to cut CPD costs and save pension from bankruptcy . Captain rank is useless , let captains take over as deputy chief , Lt. run district , straight days , a car and weekends off . She will have them fighting over the spot and will get better people . Most Lt.'s assigned as a field lt. could run circles around most district commanders , area deputy chiefs . Lori ask your District Commanders, Deputy Chiefs to take and pass a Sgt. exam , most could not , most have little Patrol Division experience . Time to clean house .
The United States President is protected by the Secret Service, Illinois governor is protected by the State Police, Lightfoot does not want CPD to protect her and her family. Interesting !!!!

The mere fact that someone was on the bodyguard detail makes them " land on their feet". Who cares if after four years at a higher pay grade you are on midnights in 007. You will have to retire fairly soon to keep that enhanced pension.

Because dipshit, IROCC was legislated for your personal protection ONLY. If you hire yourself out, state law requires that you have a PERF card unless you are and ACTIVE (not retired) police officer. They have no police powers; are taking police jobs in violation of the contract; cannot order around the lowliest PPO; cannot talk on the CPD radios or drive emergency police vehicles unless the police. It's in the orders, the contract and the state law as well as city ordinance. Put down the iPhone and pick up a book once in awhile.
12:56am-Here's the loophole for vehicles and lights/sirens: use vehicles from OEMC which have the radios and emergency equipment ( the cars have red &green lights ). If the Chicago Special Police status is no longer available (as some readers have posted), ask Sheriff Dart to Deputize her detail and they will be able to expedite her forays into the suburbs as well as the city.

To the mayor's detail people who don't get it, when the regime changes so do the guards. You knew that going in. You had a great gig for a while, appreciate it and move on. Anybody can be sworn in as a Cook County Sheriff or Special Deputy US Marshal. Both have sworn in numerous people over the years and both give the person police powers.

Putting aside all the rules and regs, coppers from other agencies wouldn’t even know street names, locations, procedure, etc. That would take a while to learn and for them to be “comfortable” in certain communities. Eek, can you imagine 1st and 3rd watches in the dark with lights and camera poles shattered? We’re lost, help!
