- Mayor Rahm Emanuel once bragged he’d made “lemonade out of a big lemon,” and would save taxpayers $1 billion over 71 years, when he settled reimbursement claims from the company leasing Chicago’s parking meters. But the retiring mayor may want to revise that statement after seeing results of the latest annual audit of the deal Chicagoans love to hate.
Chicago’s parking meter system raked in another $132.7 million in 2018, allowing private investors to more than recoup their entire $1.16 billion investment with 65 years to go on the 75-year lease. Four underground city-owned parking garages took in $34.1 million in 2018, while the privatized Chicago Skyway generated just under $99 million in cash, separate audits of those assets show.
Not a penny of those revenues, once a mainstay for city government, went to ease the $2 billion avalanche of tax increases imposed by Emanuel to solve the city’s pension crisis. That’s because all three assets were unloaded by former Mayor Richard M. Daley, who used the money to avoid raising property taxes while city employee pension funds sunk deeper in the hole.
It's far past time to tar-and-feather much of the City Council and hang more than a few of the retired asshole politicians.

Companies move their headquarters into the city, pay no taxes, run the company into the ground while paying the exec's crazy salary's, company declares bankruptcy and their employees are out of work. How many times do we fix the same water pipes? How many times do we repave the same street? How many times do sewers get replaced? All of this is done by contractors and very high costs, not city employees, only to have the city employees months later have to redo the job because of shoddy work by the contractors. How many lawsuits against the city are just paid off without regard for liability because the city law department farms out work to clouted attorneys who could care less if the city they are representing is guilty. After all, Chicago has deep pockets so just settle.

Second Division: Those vehicles which are designed for carrying more than 10 persons, those designed or used for living quarters and those vehicles which are designed for pulling or carrying property, freight or cargo, those motor vehicles of the First Division remodelled for use and used as motor vehicles of the Second Division, and those motor vehicles of the First Division used and registered as school buses.

Check your State Law Books. Are Pickup Trucks and Vans that qualify as Second Division Legally allowed under th ILCS to have Anything other than a Truck Plate on them? The E350 Pickup is hitting 10k on the Vehicle weight sticker inside the Drivers door.

I just love it when I hear guys say things like they are glad they moved to Florida or wherever. What sense does that make? Do you think you are insulated from any of this by retiring and moving out of State? Are you really that dense? You can live on another planet but if you are living on a pension and the City goes bankrupt, you as well as the rest of us are screwed. Me? I am distressed by this story and want to see the City be a vibrant, successful entity which makes a lot of dollars and is self sustaining. I want to see the pension fund fully funded for many years to come.

LOL Pensions will be funded even if the city (or state!) goes bankrupt. There will just be a huge haircut for most. Look at Detroit or Central Falls bankruptcies. I suggest those who are retired or going to retire to be much more frugal.

You have a better chance at peace in the world and end hunger than making Chicago a vibrant, successful city. There are very good reasons why thousands of people leave Chicago and Illinois every year. While you hope for a great city, others leave to find a safe place to live for their families. There are great places to raise a family outside of Chicago. Places that actually welcome police and have excellent schools and lower cost of living. The price is too high to live in Chicago.
This is petty, but maybe we can remove Shortshanks’ name off of any infrastructure or park for the crap he pulled with the Skyway and the parking spots - Maggie Daly Park included. Maybe name it for the parking meeting company? The city needs permanent, visible reminders of how Daly fucked us. It might have made it harder for Rahm to get sloppy seconds during his term.

I have news for you dummy, it was filled with corruption long before Richard J. Daley became mayor in 1955. And besides, back then a democratic politician was like todays republican. Vote for a dem today, you are voting for a socialist.
You are correct about democratic voters being enablers, but the ones voting for them are illegal aliens, who by the way shouldn't even be voting, contrary to what Obama said, the gibs me dat crowd, and political hacks beholden to the city, not the lowly beat cop who owes nothing to the machine.

as far as bashing retirees that move south the poster is dead wrong. in shitcago your tiny house is 300-400 k. your ho 3 and car ins is high due to losses. your prop taxes are 5-12 grand. your sales taxes and gas taxes are among the highest in the country. im not a fan of florida but how about 200 k for a nice house with in ground pool built in the last ten years. how about 700.00 prop taxes. no state tax. no veh sticker. cheap plates. cheap ins because most of the retirement areas arent full of loss causing scumbags.how about the only gas you use is for your stove, no 600. month to heat your house. no winter clothes! plus life lengthening outdoor activities all year, biking, walking, beaches, fishing etc. no huddled up in the house eating and watching tv all winter. if you get out soon while prices are high and buy for cash in the south where prices are low and dont live like a crackhead you will survive much better than living here. im a city retiree and if the pensions end i can be very broke here or a little broke in florida. i choose florida. you "i love chicago and im never leaving" guys are just afraid of change. theres a whole lot of homeless guys living on lower wacker in the winter that could be homeless anywhere. they, like you, choose to be miserable and stay here. you didnt do anything wrong by being loyal to your hometown. ive been here almost 70 years and it pains me deeply to see what the politicians have done to our hometown. we too will become new immigrants to a new world we never expected to be in. a stranger in a strange place. illinois is toast, chicago is somalia, to stay is self abuse. good luck in your retirement and you can have my truckload of winter clothes and boots. margaritaville and flip flops here i come!
