- Chicago police plan to beef up patrols of CTA trains and buses beginning Memorial Day weekend to handle the expected large groups of youths traveling to the downtown area this summer.
Eddie Johnson, retained as police superintendent by new Mayor Lori Lightfoot, confirmed Wednesday that more than 40 additional officers will patrol elevated train and subway and bus lines beginning Friday.

Memorial Day or Decoration Day as it used to be know has been around since the Civil War. It was meant to honor deceased members of the military. I remember in the 1950s people having ceremonies and going to the cemeteries to honor people who were killed in the service. Families even went to cemeteries just to honor non military deceased relatives and friends. Some Chicago streets had in memory of plaques, with a serviceman's name, attached to the street light posts or some even had monuments dedicated to the soldiers. There was no need to be beef up police patrols for Memorial Day then. Times have certainty changed, every holiday now, police patrols need to be beefed up for the rabble rousers. Everything has turned into a slugfest, drugfest, drunkfest, rapfest, political fest, whatever fest where the police are put in the middle. Most people have no idea of what Memorial Day is. And now we are celebrating allegiance and loyalty to foreign countries with fests and parades more so than to our country. About a year ago even Trump was vilified by the liberal left & news media for suggesting having a national parade honoring the military.
Forty police officers for 234 square miles with all the bus lines, elevated/subway trains & stations. You could put all 40 officers at just the Chicago & State subway station on a weekend night and they still couldn't contain the wildings. Been there done that. Even if you got the fare jumpers to pay it would take the cta out of its deficit!
I cannot wait to see how Lightgroot handles the wildings! Suppress the reporting as the previous administration did? Blame Eddie? Perhaps threaten the youths with a jobs fair?

Actually a smart move. If Lori puts in a superintendent who fails, she wears the jacket. When (note I did not say "if") Johnson fails, she gave one of Rahms's guy a chance. Johnson then gets pushed under the bus. A superintendent is hired to be fired to protect the political class.
When I first read it i thought SCC left off a zero, but I guess not. 40 extra patrolman assigned! Gee, I feel a whole lot safer now. I feel for ya blue. I don't know how you do this job day in and day out. I'm a CCW holder and I still won't go downtown. Why chance it in this anti law and order climate. Yep. The Dept is violating the contract. Memorial Day happens every year! They had more than 21 days notice. I will be filing my grievance after this weekend.

The best way to beef up district patrol manpower year round, would be to disband some of the entitled incredibly useless units and put everyone back in patrol where they are desperately needed. This is the real reform needed. This has been going on forever and no one ever thinks about the senseless waste. Next Lighfoot needs to fix the pension fund and settle the contract. This would go a long way to boost morale and energize police officers. Right now all that’s on their minds is concern for their financial future.

HGS isn’t in uniforms- nor will we be on a footpost. And our RDOs were canceled too so OT starts early!
All a dog and pony show and the citizenry eats it all up because the media puts it out there. I agree with the poster at 01:56 most don't know the real meaning of the holiday and worst, most don't care. I remember when there was even more outrage because our days were being canceled on summer holidays. We've become resigned to the fact that every major holiday that comes along we're going to get fucked out of time with our loved ones so animals will not kill each other. The thought is disenchanting and keeps the stay fetal stance for survival alive for me. I hope Lori Light on her foot(trying to keep the tiny dancer reference going with our new mayor)realizes morale in the CPD has bottomed out for years during the previous administration and will do something to improve it. Won't be holding my breath though. Stay safe this Memorial Day and honor those that have sacrificed it all for this great nation. God bless the U.S.A and God bless those that protect her. File a grievance. They’re violating the contract. They can’t cancel a whole watch like that. They have to go by seniority by the whole unit. Those 2nd watch senior detectives should have been asked if they wanted the overtime first. So they can be part of the grievance too.

And in typical HQ fashion, our district has 9 posts to cover, but 4 2 man cars working thier cancelled day off, so how does that work? Not to mention they call it out as 'post #x,A-Z' so I guess each post has 26 different spots (A thru Z).
I saw a news clip about lighthoof rejecting her new security chief's suggestion of bring in the national guard to help with the violence. If she's even listening to his suggestions, I think she's looking at him as the next supernintendo.

Ok, so the yutes got an extra day off on Monday, and Da Mayor has assigned all hands on deck, all days off cancelled.
Which begs the question:
What about NEXT weekend, or the weekend after that? Or every friggin day of their summer days off from school, which is June 20-something to Labor Day?
Da Mayor was a prosecutor......rather intelligent woman......does she really think putting out thousands of officers are going to stem the tide of the lawlessness being created by the "children"? Wouldn't it be nice if we had a Section of the department with these officers that worked on and trained for dealing with these Special Operations? Wouldn't it be nice if we had S.O.S. back? I'd settle for an entire Unit that could Tactically Respond to these situations, also.

Hello FOP!!!! Why does an Officer or Detective who has been scheduled to be RDO on 24, 25, or 26 May 2019 since the Police calendar came out in November 2018 have to now work that day while someone who put in a P-Day at least ten days before May 24, 25, 26 gets the day off? People who are RDO any of those days can’t put in a P-Day because it’s their regularly scheduled day off already. Same thing for July 3rd. If you are RDO on July 3rd this year you are probably going to be at work while someone who puts in a P-Day at least ten days prior gets the day off. How is that fair? And while I’m on a rant, why does an Officer with over 14 years on the job who works a 9 hour 4/2 schedule get cheated out of 1.5 vacation days a year? Don’t tell me about how furloughs are now based on 200 hours for someone with over 14 years on the job. Check the contract on page 50, section 29A.2. Says officer with over 14 years get 25 WORKING DAYS! Nowhere in the contract(which the city uses to their benefit when it suits them) does it say anything about 200 hours, which works out to 23.5 working days for an Officer working a 9 hour 4/2 schedule. If the contract says WORKING DAYS why doesn’t the city have to honor that? It’s written in black and white. That’s why we have contracts.

OT but regarding the mayor removing Johnson at the first instance of trouble, of course she will. She recommended outsider last time. Don't doubt for one second Jim Smith isn't already a contender for Superintendent's job. When will these politicians realize that the learning curve for an outsider is about 12-18 months. They have to learn the political climate, the geographical environment, the conditions in all the neighborhoods and so much more. They make their sweeping changes based upon preconceived notions of how to deal with the issues Chicagoans and the Chicago Police are confronted with and in the meantime our City pays the price. Issues of general crime, gangs and the thuggery we deal with here in Chicago are unique to Chicago in many ways. Only LA has a similarly entrenched generational gang problem. Political policies have contributed to the break down of the family and the loss of basic human values. Respect taught in the structure of the family and in the practice of faith is lost among some in our society and the only respect is street respect. At the same time political policies take tools out of our tool box. God Bless the the Chicago Police Department and stay safe!!!!
Ridiculous.....absolutely ridiculous that THIS CITY has to put thousands of coppers on cancelled days off to maintain some semblance of peace and tranquility on a holiday weekend in May. Ridiculous that certain segments of our citizens just can't stop killing, shooting, beating, stealing, robbing, running amok, destroying store inventories, pushing people off sidewalks, punching people on our CTA trains.
This "social justice" mantra is fast becoming a free for all to commit mayhem. "Social Justice" should be the re-evaluation of jail/prison time for crimes that were in fact way overcharged with long prison sentences. Society has started to remedy this, with new guidelines for drug crimes, minor thefts, and eliminating certain drug possessions as no longer enforceable. However, "social justice" is NOT letting felons caught with guns go free, large quantity drug dealers go free, letting people who batter others for no reason go free, allowing hundreds of unmanageable young people to disrupt an entire downtown area by running amok, pushing, shoving, stealing, hitting others who have done them no harm either. Perhaps it is true that too many black and brown were in jail in the past, BUT if it is black and brown doing the crimes NOW, then they SHOULD be in jail.
Either we are a city with some laws and civility, or we are not. And unless this is brought under control by some tough talk and ACTION by the new Mayor, this city will decline faster than ever. Already we see Lollapalooza can't sell its tickets, too much crime during/after it.
I believe Hotel tourism receipts are down. The downtown stores are losing inventory. Hundreds are still being shot and killed in the "communities"

If her own Head of Security told her we need the National Guard, then you know something is very very wrong with how this mayhem is being handled....she can't depend on the weather to help her out all summer.
