Good Job Sarge

  • Wilkerson and the other coaches know this game represents more than runs and outs, winning and losing. The players on this field in Austin are among nearly 500 kids organized into a league by a Chicago police sergeant and community leaders who believe teamwork can change the lives of children who face crime and economic hardship every day.

They raised more than $15,000, got companies to donate equipment and signed up volunteers from police stations, churches and local organizations. The 20 teams play every Saturday in parks across the West Side, in some of the most violent areas of the city.

“These are the kids that we are out here trying to protect,” Austin District Sgt. Jermaine Harris explained one evening at another game, this one at Columbus Park, where the rumble of cars on the Eisenhower Expressway mixed with cheers from the stands.
Cops are almost never just cops - they're neighbors, parishioners, community leaders and coaches. And we were doing it before Groot said CPD has to "reconnect" with the citizenry.

Police are only praised when they are not enforcing the law and they can never be praised for the judicious, timely, necessary use of force against violent criminals.

This is impossible.

Everyone knows the Police are nothing but racist neo-nazi imperialist colonizers.
The Democrats keep telling me so.

The mayor has no idea what cops do in their off-duty time. She thinks we sit around polishing our bullets and cleaning our guns while whispering "Soon baby, sooooon."
She is probably shocked to see cops doing nice things for their neighbors and the good people who still live in town (at least they still live here. Just about everyone I know is looking forward to leaving).

As a youth, I played at both West Lawn & Marquette Baseball Little Leagues. Over those years, most of my coaches were CPD. Their influence, guidance, and personable demeanor is what led me to ultimately join the CPD almost 29 years ago. I, because of their influence, also gave back and coached for over 15 years before I ever coached my own children. Thanks guys for showing what CPD, men & women, are ACTUALLY all about. Kudos

At our parish it’s always the cops and firemen volunteering to coach the kids, go on field trips, work the food drive etc.
No one wants anything to do with that story. We’re all just lazy, racist cops who shoot unarmed citizens

There used the be a group called The North Austin Boys Club at Amundsen Park, run for years by CPD-CFD personnel. They had everything for everyone.

The liberals are turning our profession from law enforcement to social worker. We are not social workers. We are law enforcement. We enforce laws.

When I was at the Neighborhood Boy's Club in Revere Park, our football coach was a Auto Theft Dick at Area 6 on Damen and Grace. But that was a long time ago.

I’ve been saying this for years. I personally know dozens of CPD members who volunteer coach. Volunteer at the church. Many examples. All Lightgroot does is grab the next government job after government job, selling out to the highest bidder.

Pretty good article today in the Wall Street Journal from a professor of Criminal Justice. His point is the progressive policies of the mayor of NYC and his putting down of the police is turning that city into a pit of crime. Looks like the same thing will ( and has) happen here.

Great job coach. About half the coaches at Norwood Park, wildwood Park and Brooks Park are CPD officers if not more. Glad it’s spreading to other parts of the city

OT
London (AP)
Emily Hartridge died Friday while riding an electric scooter
in a busy intersection. She was hit by a truck (lorry in British
parlance). She was a 30-something well known on YouTube.
This fucking insanity is WORLD WIDE.
It is ILLEGAL to ride e-scooters on sidewalks or on roads, but
the law is widely flaunted (in London).
Baseball will do these boys no good if they turn to Vaping and
electric scooters. Let's save this generation NOW!

I worked Cabrini for nearly a quarter century
I remember Jane Byrne’s husband (Jay McMullen) ran a similar youth baseball program around Division and Sedgwick and called it the ‘Afro America Little League.
The teams were named after African tribes, i.e. Mau Mau’s vs. Wautusi’s (true story)
I don’t think that he could have gotten away with that today with these extreme left wing liberals regardless of how dedicated and well intended he was.
(Still miss ol’ Jane though)

THIS, not “poverty excuses” is what young people need! Developing values, ethics, rules, regulations, good sportsmanship, team spirit. You want to be a decent human being you have to make an effort at being good at something of value. Because the way you do one thing, is the way you do everything.

Sorry, this story doesn't fit my narrative.
Can't have people/folks thinking CPD personnel are decent, caring humans.
Get it off. Or there's gonna be a reckoning.

When Sears and the CPD ended the Officer Friendly Programs many years ago, regular guys and gals stepped up quietly to fill in and help out. Most good works going unrecognized by the A-Hole media clowns.

Great story, but old news and I’m not trying to take anything away from the sarge, but what’s the big deal? CPD officers have been doing this for over 50 years that I know. My kids did multiple sports in grammar school and the parks. I don’t remember one league where most of the coaches weren’t CPD. You almost expected it and everyone did it with no mention.

I used to jump out and throw a football around. Play catch with a neighborhood kid. I was a better passer than most of the former bears QBs too. That’s not saying much.

"Poverty excuses"
Yes woman, you are right.
Late 1950s "cub baseball": one cut below little league.
We knew from the sandlots that one team would win, one
team would lose. No uniforms, just different colored caps.
I once let a pitcher hit my left leg just to get on first. The "coach"
told me I should have moved. Even at that young age, boys
know you do whatever it takes to win. Nowadays, I'm not so
sure about that. (p.s. I knew I was not facing Nolan Ryan and
it really didn't hurt that much. We knew the game better than
the "coach.")

Not anymore. We are officially social workers and it sucks.
