- A man was stabbed to death on a CTA Red Line train Saturday, police said.
Chicago police said officers were called to the platform in the 100 block of West Cermak Road at 2:53 p.m. when a 54-year-old man riding the southbound Red Line got into a verbal fight with someone else on the train who took out a knife and stabbed him.
The man suffered deep cuts to his upper body and was pronounced dead on the platform, police said.
This one is going to be hard to explain at "Accountability Monday...or Tuesday...or What's Accountability?"

Lesson to be learned here is to never bring verbals to a knife fight.

Knives are so much quieter and work extremely well. I'm surprised more "knifings" don't occur. They don't need anything fancy or expense, just a cheap steak knife with a sharp edge will do or even a good utility knife.
I don't like to blame the victim but in this case he must bear some of the responsibility. I mean what the heck was he doing riding the Red Line at 2:53 in the afternoon ???? Does he not know that it's unsafe at that time? In fact if you think about it, that's EXACTLY the same time criminals are going to lunch, coming back from lunch, thinking about dinner, not thinking about dinner or even waiting for 2:54 to arrive with fanfare unseen in well over 2 hours and 57 minutes !!!
Clearly, with the possible exception of 2:83 and 3:68, a more unsafe time on the Red Line does not exist !!! And, after going through about a hundred years of Public Transportation Crime Records I cannot recall a single instance of a rape, robbery, homicide, stabbing, purse snatching or even someone being pushed on the track at those times, EVER !!!
If 2:83 and 3:68 are inconvenient he could have ensured his safety by riding at 2:41 when, as I recall, no crime has occurred in well over 48 hours!

CTA and CHA both had their own police departments as well as the Chicago Park District.
On any given watch, there are maybe 10 officers from Mass Transit working the ENTIRE CITY, supplemented by no more but often less than 10 officers working their day off. Think about that. Twenty officers working on the CTA for the ENTIRE CITY, 95th St to Howard St and State St to Austin Blvd.
And you wonder why the CTA is in such a shambles?
The Mass Transit unit needs more manpower, and they need to hire more officers on their day off.
Don't know why CTA has been skimping on hiring guys on their day off since January, but whatever the reason (mismanagement of the OT busget most likely), we are seeing the results now.
