Learning Curve

How many times do we have to post this?

  • A man was killed late Sunday morning when a stolen Jeep fleeing from Chicago police crashed into a bus shelter on the city’s Far South Side, authorities said.

Charges were pending against two males and a female inside the Jeep shortly after the 11:40 a.m. crash in the 9900 block of South Van Vlissingen Road in the Jeffery Manor neighborhood, police said.

After the owner of a stolen white Jeep called police when he traced his vehicle to the 10100 block of South Crandon Avenue, officers in the area quickly spotted the vehicle and tried curbing it, police said in a statement.

The Jeep with three occupants quickly sped away before crashing into a bus shelter about a half-mile from where they fled, police said. A person inside the shelter, a 27-year-old man, was killed in the collision, police said.
Someone runs up to you and yells, "There's goes my stolen car."

The hardest thing in the world to do at that point is reply, "Do you have insurance?"

But if you don't think that's EXACTLY what the city and Department want you to do, well, you're going to be spending a lot of time in court listing assets and wondering how big a cardboard box you're going to need in short order.

Stupidity

At this stage in the game, if you're chasing stolen cars and that chase turns out bad, you deserve everything coming to you. Sorry, not sorry.

That probably applies to most proactive policing nowadays too.

The Catch 22 that democrat policy has imposed upon law enforcement:

1. Law enforcement is expected to "Protect & Serve". This is the lie that even some law enforcement officers actually believe. To enforce law does not require obligation to protect, nor to service. Residents, of whatever nature, are convinced that police are obligated to serve them and protect them. The la enforcers themselves have participated in this convincing. The perception that police are servants of residents is false. The truth that police are enforcers of laws is the truth most difficult to accept. The criminals have no difficulty in accepting this.

2. The law, as written, is, theoretically, intended to, with effective enforcements, result in residents being protected from criminals, and, thus, being served by this general effect of: less criminals free to commit crimes = fewer crimes being committed = residents experience benefits of enforcements of laws. The democrats fnd this to be not what the democrats want. Funny thing that.

3. So, democrats wanting non effectual enforcements of laws + crimnals availing opportunities of democrats getting what democrats want + residents not criminals being acutely aware of preceeding + residents still elect/reelect same flavor democrats = residents can cry me a fucking river.

Catch a .22, .25, .38, .45, 9mm, 10mm, nato caliber available, what the fuck ever, residents can continue to cry me a fucking river.

This is the democrat way.

Soak in it.

You democrats have earned it.

If the CPD Department policy is "No Chases", why do officers still chase? Don't they know that violation of directives can lead to severe disciplinary action, or worse, Separation from the Department? In a worse case scenario, Civil litigation and punitive damages, or quite possibly criminal charges and imprisonment?

What part of "No Vehicle Pursuits" Do they Not Get? PO's need to turn off the "robotic" responses to stimuli such as vehicle pursuits. In this case, the victim located his own car. Next step of "being fetal" is let him go recover it. Touring the area with negative results seems appropriate here. "Wait right here Mr. Victim while we look around"

The victims vehicle was damaged. Nothing was gained here, and a life was lost. Some lawyer is going to have a field day with CPD.

In a normal Illinois county, where the state's attorney would actually follow the law, the charges would be 1st degree murder.

In Cook, where the prosecutors are SJWs and work to protect criminals from the law, the charges will either be low level felonies to be pled down to misdemeanors, or no charges at all.

Simply put, when you chase a car you are putting your career and possibly freedom in the hands of the fleeing shithead.
If he stops immediately and gives up you’re fine.
If he runs over a pedestrian, it’s your fault.
If he crashes into another car and kills an elderly person, it’s your fault.
If he gets out and runs then turns on you and you end up using force, it’s your fault.
Basically if anything goes wrong it’s your fault.
At least that is how the public and the department most likely will view it.
Why would you chase unless he just shot a fellow officer?
The answer is you shouldn’t.

people are unstable , violent today , you may end up wrestling , tasing , shooting an offender of many domestic battery that were not documented by beat car , write the report , you do not have to arrest the person
stay safe , no chases , no searches , drive by the groups of young men , do write the telephone in hands of driver , let person know it was Jaba prickster

Police chasing thieves in a stolen vehicle seem to usually end with the stolen car totaled. Either the cops total it or the thief does.

It is better for the owner to find the stolen car, if it's not parked already follow discretely until it is. Wait for the thieves to leave. Then use one's own keys to drive it away to the nearest safe location. Park. Then call the cops and say you've recovered your car.

"The Catch 22 that democrat policy has imposed upon law enforcement"

The government courts ruled that police have no obligation to protect anyone. Now it is the popular perception that they are supposed to, but the reality is that a person is on his own to protect himself. If this perception were shattered completely then people would start wondering why they pay taxes.

Maybe instead of taking your guns they should take your cars. Give you bikes or scooters. Citizens would be much safer. Cars first then guns finally whistles due to abundance of noise pollution and community complaints. There all the problems solved no more Ghetto Lottery checks necessary. City will save a ton, gas and upkeep costs, new car acquisitions, range time costs and of course the big one no more seven or eight figure Lottery checks. City gets the policing it wants and you get to ride around and get to know your community better.

Tough spot even for guys trying to just make a traffic stop. Once offender takes off it’s a chase whether you stop and discontinue it because once it’s started badguy has no idea if it was cancelled and continues to flee the area. If an accident happens the attorney will claim you continued the chase. A real catch22

In my working years, in one of the south districts, my partner and I attempted to curb a older Honda driven by a shithead but the car immediately takes off on us. Never did we put ourselves down on a traffic stop. We didn’t chase either, even back then. Poor driving skills and family at home was the reason to avoid pursuits. It just wasn’t worth it in the end. The plan was to complete a administrative impound by police and call it a day. About 600 feet down the road the shithead loses control of the vehicle, fish-tails and hits a light pole. We notify the dispatcher of an on-viewed traffic crash which later turned out to be fatal. We also find a gun in the shithead’s car. All in all, the tax payers won twice that day. Furthermore, the rusty light pole did not sustain ANY damage. That was a blessing.

When a citzen says good morning and asks how your day is going, the polite response is to answer.

If you are too busy to talk, which i doubt because you were just standing there while your partner talked to the security guard. The polite response is to zmile.

Off Topic: Can someone explain the clusterfuck at the Markham courthouse today? Rumor has it some dummy thought it would be a good idea to shut off the air conditioning at night and weekends (“to save money”) and then expect the building to cool off ten minutes after they open. So there’s that. Then apparently, the heat from the lack of air conditioning “did something to the gaskets in the water main” and they had to shut off the water, close the bathrooms, and send everyone home for the day at noon. Is this incompetence, or a staged excuse to raise taxes because we don’t have enough money to maintain the courthouses?

We all thought it would most likely happen, but WTF? Guys were in limbo as far as making plans for their days off over the holiday weekend. How the fuck did 35th Street not know they would cancel days off between July 3-7 before 1645 on July 1st? Did the July 4th weekend sneak up on them because there no calendars in the building at 35th Street? FOP needs to address this in the next contract. 35th Street told the districts a week and a half ago RDOs were being cancelled. You can easily pull up the BOP’s in the Document Management System and check it yourself. Stop with the blame game just cause your districts sucks at communicating this. The deadline for districts to submit names and numbers was last Friday. BOPs came out a week and half before that.

I really hope this comment was meant to be sarcastic.

Anyone who would refer to themselves as “the working police” even anonymously is a tool.
Just because you work in 011 doesn’t make you “the working police.”
I wonder if the bosses are letting you work or simply looking the other way. If it goes very bad rest assured they will not be able to take the heat off of you even if they wanted to, which I doubt they do. If they really cared they’d be making sure you worked in a manner that would help you stay out of trouble. If they’re “letting” you chase they’re not that smart. The general order is very clear and you won’t have a fucking leg to stand on if you continue a chase in violation and someone is hurt.

Stop trying to police like I did in the ‘90s just like we didn’t try to police like the older guys did in the ‘70s and ‘80s when I came on.

I remember years ago when I had to take a day at the driving range for a similar scenario posed by SCC. I had a citizen wave me down and point at a van a block away and said "that guy just stole my van". Long story short the offender made good his escape, Sgt terminated and all proper procedures, so I thought, were followed until WC called me into his office a few days later and handed me the one day refresher course. When I asked the reason he stated that the car chase was theft related and we don't chase for that. From that day on I got the message loud and clear. I was lucky that no one was hurt. So lesson here: simply tell victim, we don't chase stolen cars, absent certain aggravating factors. Then simply ask if they know their plate or VIN and you'll be happy to make them a report or referred them to ARP, which most Sgts would prefer in order to keep you up for more important things. Ha ha, live and learn.

Not necessarily, now. I have a new car, with no key, just a fob. If you’re out of the car, but close enough to it, it’ll start. I’m surprised it doesn’t happen more, especially at a gas station, where you’re in very close proximity to the vehicle. The model I have, you can unlock the car, no-touch, with the fob in close vicinity. Push start and go. They could be gone in seconds.

We have a new name for the Mayor: "Leisure Suit Lori." (for those of you old enough to remember --- In the Land of the Lounge Lizards.

Sounds perfect!

Hey, I did my best work in the powdered blue leisure suit with the flowered shirt

Throw back to 2001. Anyone remember Jackie Jackson storming through the jungle of Vieques, Puerto Rico with Luis Guiterrez? She was wearing a powder blue pants suit with her purse slung over her shoulder? Uh huh. This happened right after Jesse Jackson’s love child was discovered and Jesse had to show the world that his wife was still a relevant civil rights leader. I’m sure it scored some points at home and the public got a good laugh out of it.

It was the most ridiculous staged event I ever saw. Isn’t it nice that our “leaders” get to play out their personal dramas on the world stage?

Do NOT chase for any reason at all! None!!! Answer your calls and go home safely. This is the type of policing that they want. So give it to them.

What if someone we don't chase has someone kidnapped in the trunk who is now going to be raped and tortured?

7/02/2019 08:02:00 PM

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

What if they were an ISIS cell with a nuclear bomb in the trunk?
What if they were 3 shitheads on their way to River Oaks to shoplift some new kicks?
What if your mama had balls, she'd be your daddy.

You’re a house mouse, quit your freaking crying you act like you’re going to work on the south & Westside. My heart goes out to you, you’re off every weekend/straight days and don’t have deal with the public. Make sure you have bullets in your pistol.

I’m in unit 610 and that was when they notified us. How about next time you get your feelings hurt you don’t call in an agg batt PO.

Well I’m in 620 tough guy. I actually close my cases. You’re probably just another merit hack.

Use your head. That's different than just chasing a hot car. If you have reason to believe the scenario as you stated above, it's a totally different set of rules.

When did it become the polices fault on injuries in chase crashes? The police at no time told the offender to run, in fact, they were saying the opposite (STOP).

Lmao!!!!
Someone from 620 said they close their cases!!!
That must be the funniest post of the year!
Have you ever looked around the floor up there?
No one is closing anything in 620, don’t kid yourself.

Lt. JC from unit 312 is possibly one of the only officers in CPD history to be a victim more times than he’s been in Box 1.
His heart is in the right place, but don’t fall for his “rah rah” schtick.
He pushes his guys into shitty situations in a climate that isn’t suitable for it.

If he wants guns, he is still the police last time I checked, he can go get one.
Most likely that story ends as it usually does, with him biting off more than he can chew, and getting saved by responding officers.

You guys are wrong regarding case law for pursuits. Supreme Court has ruled it's perfectly reasonable to chase, unless the circumstances "shock the conscience". Everybody also forgets about California agencies chasing for anything and everything. Nobody is more liberal and fucked up than the state of California, yet they get into car chases hourly. It's CPD pursuit policy that is fucked up, not the supreme court established case law.

Man how things have changed. As a kid growing up in Rogers Park during the 70s, one of my meighbors was kidnapped. Coppers were flying the through allies and streets chasing the asshole’s car. My brother swears there were guns fired too. I don’t remember that part, but it was like something out of the movies. Helicopter, tons of police cars everywhere. Cops told us to go inside our homes, eventually the kid was let go and the asshole was caught. Thankfully.

I hope 6711H reads this. They’re trying real hard to get sued in 002 lately.

7/02/2019 12:20:00 AM

Really? 002? I’ve read the reports. Nothing is going to happen. Don’t believe everything you hear.
