Waste at CPS

Something we covered years ago....and still in our archives if you look around:
  • After finding a dumpster full of books outside a Chicago public high school, residents want to know why.

[...] Chicago Public Schools said it is still trying to get to the bottom of the matter.

The district would only said that it is aware of it and that it is looking into what neighbors said; that a dumpster was set up nearby days ago. Neighbors took pictures and shared the images on social media, but by Tuesday morning, the dumpster was alreadygone.

Classic novels including The Great Gatsby, Hiroshima among others, were found in a dumpster by a woman who asked to remain anonymous.
This happens every single year, but under the radar and out of sight. We also told everyone about pallets of computers and printers and assorted software, still wrapped in plastic and sitting in school storerooms across the city - because if CPS doesn't spend the money, they might have to return it to taxpayers. And that is a no-no.

Someone got sloppy allowing this to be photographed.

Here's another good one. Did a bulk property inventory in a south side district. Found like 10 laptops that belonged to CPS. They were recovered in a burglary pinch where a school was burglarized. So I called CPS and the principal of the school. cps told me they didnt want them and the principal told me oh they can destroy them we are getting new ones anyway.

Yep, just take a look at your recent Crook County property tax statement and you can see 56% going to CPS/Board of Ed. But don’t worry, CPS will be ready to strike if they don’t get their way. It’s for the children. The pension pickup by the state needs to be abolished, and those teachers need to start paying the 9% the law says for their pension contribution rather than the 2% they’ve been paying for decades. Such a scam

As for those shrink wrapped "durables," well they were purchased
in bulk, under contract, to avoid maintenance issues. Just plug in
a new one. (The companies were, in fact, unloading obsolete
technology at a premium price. A keyboard or monitor lasting
2 or more years? That's heresy. Buy the new ones. All the other
states are doing it. After all, it's for the children.

So many CPS students cannot read so it makes sense to discard the books... Yes a book can be used as a door stop but so can a $2000 doorstop. Priorities must come to bear.

This was the best line in the CBS 2 video:
"CBS 2 has learned that it was possible that the books were going through a weeding and recycling process. Senn is undergoing renovations to its library and as part of that process, the school needed to take out books either in surplus or were outdated."

How naive is Channel 2? Could they have gone futher with some questioning? I thought if you were going to recycle surplus books you might send them off to other schools that don't have them. How about all the Chicago Public Libraries? Or even donate them to hospitals, nursing homes, senior citizen centers, community centers but not put them into a dumpster to go to another landfill that the taxpayers will have to pay for in addition to the original purchase price of the books. The gouging of the taxpayers continues! We know that CPS does not teach history, watch any of those on the street interviews of people on the street to see the lack of knowledge people have nowadays. And outdated classic books like "The Great Gatsby" and "Hiroshima", yes they need to get rid of them because the progressive socialists in the new world order don't want students reading about the past. They have to erase the past, burn the books, tear down the statues, paint over the murals if it doesn't fit their narrative. Mold these young minds into the socialism/communist movement.

I bought the book, The Great Gatsby, twice, once in high school and also in college. I went to Catholic schools so the taxpayers did not have to pay. And I did not throw them into the dumpsters, they were given to friends that needed them.

Years back while on patrol in 025, we drove past a school on Hirsch.
We saw smoke or steam coming out of a dumpster there. Looking in there were probably a thousand chicken nuggets. Why cook too many if the kids won’t eat them?

Seems waste is everywhere in city schools.

Teachers unions are leeches 9n the taxpayers wallet. I went to parochial school, one nun in our grade, morning and afternoon class 54 kids in each group. Graduated from 8th grade, 3 classes, 3 nuns, 163 students. Checking around after HS reunions etc and most of our class made it. Professionals, doctor or two, lawyers, business owners, cops, firefighters, teachers, politicians, etc. The nuns taught because it was a calling, union teachers only work for cash and could care less.

Many years ago Phil Jackson was brought on to run intergovernmental affairs at the Chicago public school system, this was until he discovered the massive waste in the warehouse is the massive amount of vehicles in their bicycles books, computers just being piled up from Contractor’s he was quickly removed from that position after it became public and it is being covered up now as it always has been it’s for so many years ago;

If we had any type of investigative reporting in the city of Chicago which we don’t have because they’re all owned by the Democratic machine they could look into this and resurrect it.

In the past few weeks, individual CPS staff members have walked in to the desk on about 5 separate occasions to report loss/theft after their "year-end audit" of computer equipment. Each incident was thousands of dollars of Chromebooks, Mac Books and laptops just plain gone--and we pay for all of it. Not only is this glaring mismanagement and oversight, but how is it that CPS's formal reporting mechanism is some individual low-level staff member just going to a district station with a list, to walk out with a VIN? Oh, I know why--CPS just keeps raising their tax levy and thinks nothing of wasting our money.

At my school, the Chrome books (small handheld computers that cost about $500) get minor damage all the time. They sit for months before someone from CPS will come out and look at them. When CPS does come out, the service person will only look at the Chrome books on his list even though by that time the number of broken computers is double. It will then take months before the service man comes out to fix any of them so our principal just buys new ones and throws out the damaged ones. The teachers also have $2000 smartboards in the rooms. These smartboards have $50 lights that go out after about a year. Just like above, CPS sends out a service person about 4 months after you put in the request telling them a lightbulb is needed. The service person them comes with no parts, will not look at anything not on his list, and tells the principal that the parts will be ordered and then you never see the service person again. So the principal just buys new smartboards.
Any person can get a copy of what any CPS school is buying and wasting money on. The principal has to give the purchases at the "Public LSC meeting" each month. But if most schools are like mine, nobody shows up at the LSC meetings and the members are a rubber stamp for the principal.

Seen similar in a dumpster Jefferson Elementary (now a STEM) was still going years ago behind Pompei.
Another time was at a burglary call, an actual dust layered, unused, library at a catholic grade school that was CPS bought and converted into one of their alternative schools...for the kids.

Guess it only takes a sentence to change history, ideology and current trends with offensive nouns/pronouns, gender bends, military generals, and the all too larger than life obama references to toss and entire library collection in the bin.

But keep funding the CPS, it’s all taxpayer money taken from the 55% real estate cut and levies, plus various Fed/State grants.
No vendor is going to sell CPS just what they need, it’s always more. I remember a while back some CPS high school culinary dept bought a half dozen cappuccino machines for $1000 each - because they can.
Anywhere else a business manager would be fired for such misappropriation.

Oh, and by the way...I’m just so tired of hearing about how teachers are spending their own money to buy school supplies and they do absolutely nothing when it comes to the overspending by their management but keep endorsing Democrats.
Sackless CTU only yaps when it comes to their contract benefits package coming up short.

CPS knows that if you keep 'em just enough uneducated, there's your easily-molded masses. After all, someone's got to take all those $15 an hour minimum wage jobs. Why not just keep buying as much as possible new every year? It's not like they could spend it on, I don't know...maybe classroom supplies so that the lists don't reach multiple pages (that only about 30% of the parents supply for the whole classroom)? Maybe have those lunch workers COOK some actual food vs the garbage they heat up and throw at the kids? Which so much of ends up in...the dumpster. Hmmm...seeing a pattern here...

My wife works for an outside agency that sometimes has to go in and deal with CPS students (the troubled ones). One of them smashed FOUR iPads one day while throwing a fit. My wife's immediate reaction was to tell the counselor to get new screen protectors. The counselor was dismissive, saying that they'll "just get new ones." What the holy hell happens to the old ones? They seriously don't spend $6 to protect a $400 asset? And when the screen breaks, they don't spend $60 to fix it, they buy a new $400 asset? What is their budget just for iPads alone?

I worked security for over 12 years at a local public grammar school. The waste is staggering. Start with the food; if a student even touches a carton of milk or other packaged item but chooses not to take it the food staff throws it away. 3 meals provided to all students whether they want them or not because the government pays twice as much as the meal is worth and the school doesn't want to lose the money (that told to me by a principal.) The government also reimburses so much per student so CPS doesn't look too closely into whether the student is a resident unless the student is a problem. Parents of non-residents renting addresses of local apartment mailboxes. Dumpsters at my school filled with unopened cases of brand new books. They claim to spend about 12-14k/student at CPS but my kids' education was 10x's better at Catholic schools for less $$ (not much less but I decided to forgo driving a high end ride and other luxuries to give my guys a good foundation, which has paid off tenfold.)

Teachers should have to pay in their own pension, they should be paying 9.5% like everybody else , not 2% . Maybe take a pay freeze for a year or two . Look at your latest real estate tax bill ? Why can’t they cut the free breakfasts 🍳, lunches and turn off the air conditioning.
Kids can’t learn without air ? They sure learn in the Cathedral And other private schools that cannot afford air conditioning.

Hey SCC,

You hit the jackpot with this thread. I wrote a post and can't believe the extent of the waste in the public school system and we are paying for all this, congratulations on all the posts. Here is an additional true story that comes to mind comparing the Catholic school to the public. I was in a Chicago Catholic School in the late 50s & early 60s. At the being of the school year the nuns would hand out the text books that were used by the previous year's students. We had to go through each book and report any missing pages or damage. We were also told to use our erasers to erase any markings by the previous students. Some of those text books were ancient. When they gave you paper, looseleaf or art, it was one sheet that was it. One nun even handed out sandpaper to get any markings out of the wooden desks. And every day students were chosen to clean and sweep the classrooms after school, usually picked if you caused problems that day! The school was really frugal! Some books like the spelling book was ours to keep since you were required to write in them.

I could have told you this around 20 years ago. I was in 004, and we got a burglar alarm at a school on around 9700 Torrance Avenue. The janitor met us, let us in, and we checked the building. We were in the basement and discovered easily over $300,00 worth of desks, computers, books, etc. IN ONE SCHOOL, COVERED WITH PLASTIC, UNUSED. Do the math.

I'm not a Chicago public school teacher, nor am I one to troll or comment on public forums, but your comment is out of line and inaccurate. Clearly you do not have children of your own. If you did, you would know that most teachers put a great deal of time and effort into your kids. Yes, everyone knows they are constantly in the news, but in my experience most teachers only want the best for children. Please don't make blanket statements like that. You sound completely ignorant.

Wow... Call and email your alderman and demand a city ordinance be passed. No more CPS waste. Have the ordinance be tied to the CPS Teacher's Union contract, if they violate it and toss usable items that is a demerit for new teacher's contracts. That will force some small level of compliance.
