Big "Whoops"
- A Chicago police officer was injured Thursday afternoon when he was struck by another police car as officers were pursuing someone who had just thrown a gun out of a car on the West Side.
Police were near the 1800 block of South Drake around 1:10 p.m. to monitor a “gang funeral” when officers saw someone toss a gun out of a car, Deputy Chief Ernest Cato told reporters.
Officers tried to pull over the vehicle, but the driver took off. One of the officers got out of the squad car to try to spot the car on foot.
“When he entered the alley, at approximately the 1800 block of Drake, he was struck by assisting units,” Cato said.
We're told that the officer rounded a blind corner and was struck a glancing blow by the squad car. Immediate aid was rendered and he was rushed to the hospital for treatment of a concussion and possible broken bones. An accident that could have ended badly - but an accident nonetheless.

Things like this happen from time to time when you’re out there working. Something very similar occurred about 14 years ago in Englewood and I caught the paper. Thankfully everything turned out OK . Best wishes for a speedy recovery.

We need to just let the criminals do whatever they want. This city endlessly fucks us and now there isn’t even incentive. We should strictly do reactive policing until they realize swiping is the issue. Also if they implement 6-2 like it’s rumored to happen, I for one will do nothing. I’m on tac. I will do next to nothing. I will likely long form a suspended once every other day and do do shit else the rest of our 9 hour tour, all the while filling out applications to transfer to another department. I’ve gotten injured in a foot pursuit a few years ago, and it’s a nagging injury that randomly impacts me. It wasn’t worth it. At all. IOD was cool but it’s something that I carry for life and it’s not worth it.
Dont blame the officers, they were just doing their job.

I just hope the Officer makes a full recovery. I heard there were two broken ribs and a broken sternum. Just remember sometimes we carry our injuries until we leave this world. This job isn’t worth getting all broken up. I know several officers who never fully recovered and are regretful about getting permanently injured.

Please, please be careful coming in on these chases. I remember about 20 years ago a Harvey copper accidently ran down a Markham copper who was in a foot chase with an auto thief. Remember his funeral was in 002.
