Here's an Idea

Suggested by an e-mailer:
  • If it "isn't about the money" as so many of the CTU people claim, how about Groot takes 7% of the proposed 16% and apply it to the pensions that teachers don't pay into? Then they can take 9% raises, similar to what the FOP is about to get.
And as we read in a comment this week, what are Chicago taxpayers getting for the proposed 16%?
  • a 16% increase in graduation rates?
  • perhaps 16% increases in reading and math scores?
After all, crime has been down by double digits according to Special Ed and Groot. A double-digit raise is the very least FOP should be demanding.

But the CTU? We don't see anything aside from decreases in reading scores, math scores, graduation rates, decreases in students whose families are fleeing the city.

If Lightfoot gives into the CTU then she has turned her back on the taxpayers. She has come this far already and it will be all for nothing if she caves to Jesse Sharkey. She’s winning and the teachers are starting to freak out. The teachers have the most to lose. The city will win if Lightfoot breaks the CTU.

Teachers pay next to nothing into the pension, while on average making $100k a year and they get more out of their pension than we could ever hope to get out of ours Their life expectancy after retirement is longer, while we hope to reach 10 years if we’re lucky.

It’s not only that they want a raise that there is no money for, how about the system they have in place to even further screw the taxpayers? CPS starts the ball rolling for a jaw dropping amount of students to get SSI disability, which they stay on for the rest of their fucking lives. It’s a scam and the government needs to investigate it. Kids on SSI for ASTHMA? Learning disabilities NOS, meaning they can’t really put their finger on what’s wrong but let’s give Grama or Auntie a check every month to take care of Junior who doesn’t have a goddamn thing wrong with him.

They want to put themselves out there by disrupting traffic and turning down a generous offer? Put them under the microscope. Fed up with their bullshit. This is not the CTU of yesterday. It’s the epicenter of generating cradle to grave welfare recipients.

CPS agreed to pay 7% of the 9% of each teachers' pension contribution in 1987 in place of a pay raise as part of contract negotiations. Fast forward to 2017, CPS decided it was time to make this perk go away for new hires to save money. Or did it?

The CPS 7% pension pick-up didn't disappear for new hires. New hires got a new salary schedule that's 7% higher that the one with the pick-up.

In other words, CPS was spending the same amount of money as before.

New hires received a 3.5% increase in January, 2017 and another 3.5% raise in a July, 2017; over the long run, CPS will save money in not giving them the pension pickup. They might save money by having the 2nd half of the raise kick in 6 months later, but otherwise there is no savings.

In the next teachers contract when everyone gets, say, a 3%-5% raise, the new hires will have a 7% higher salary upon which to compound that raise. That new salary will equal the old teachers salary post-raise plus their 7% pension pick-up. Zero savings.

This is what it’s about by their own admission. Once raises are offered its almost impossible to pull them off and if they can you will win in arbitration Below is taken directly from the CTU website. Pay special attention to the statement

The contract is an innovative tool to achieve housing goals.

A new Chicago Teachers Union committee has formed to address the critical issue of housing insecurity for CPS families and our members. This committee will work to support several housing demands in current contract negotiations, as well as work in coalition with community partners on city, county and state housing initiatives.
Being legally binding, our contract is an innovative tool to achieve housing goals that may be elusive in other arenas. Our current contract proposals direct CPS to:
Advocate for a city housing policy that creates affordable housing at a rate greater than or equal to the creation of market rate housing, and support legislative efforts to enact rent control;
Institute a program that financially helps new teachers purchase a home;
Hire staff to support CPS families in danger of losing their housing, for example, by hiring full-time School Community Representatives at schools with the largest percentage of homeless students;
Ensure the city use TIF funds and revenue from real estate transfer taxes, a corporate head tax and a millionaire’s tax to fund affordable family housing units within the enrollment boundary of our Sustainable Community Schools;
Fully fund Section 8 voucher programs and expand Airbnb housing rehabilitation to properly house 15,000 homeless students by 2020.

Question about that 2% CPS pension contribution....
does it mean if it’s raised to 9% is the City obligated to up their share or is the City already picking up that difference in contributions as well?
Groot says they ain’t no money going to be put up that means the city isn’t won’t pay a higher share of pension costs.
I know new hires sine the 2015-19 Contract are paying 9% into pensions.

Anyway, taxpayers paying more every year for “free education” (day care] for freeloaders and always we hear from some really smart teachers that they’re paying for their own classroom school supplies...because the CPS $6 billion operating budget can’t foot the bill for stuff like that. Third largest public school system in the nation and the smart teachers want taxpayers to buy pencils and paper.
For the Kids, and what are they filling those annual free backpacks with? Candy and take-home lunchboxes or free iPads and cellphones?

Then there’s smartie-pants Larri LightLoafer wants $18 mil to open libraries on Sundays (who are also allowed to Strike) and yet there’s no substantiation that there’s any increase in library attendance, but Loafers says it’s $18 mil is a small tax increase. No Kids go to the library, not the 300,000-400,000 that are currently on strike leave are spending idle time struggling to read even a CPS book.

It’s like the ever rising expensive water bill, metered or not.
Same crappy water as the last year except now paying more for the lead, which is higher than any retrofitted air conditioned CPS classroom with all the teacher paid pencils.

If the National education system were legitimate it would find CPS is long beyond gone when it comes to accreditation.
Only a matter of time before CPS will be front and center again caught up in another corruption scheme.
Rahm had 4 superintendents turned over all of which came with high regards from Arnie Duncan scholarships.

CPS is and wants their own socialist society operating in capitalists luxury.
Flat rate a teachers pay and benefits, include executive administration too, then give the excesses back to the kids.
Try it for 5 years and see if it works out.
Oh wait, the eligible kids get the SSI and the guardians (payees) get another stipend...guess that plan won’t work anymore money going to the kids will make them more richer than their teachers.

Here are CPS' Progress Report Highlights (2019):

Record-High Graduation Rate: Students have earned a diploma at an all-time record high of 78.2 percent this year. The biggest improvements have come from African American and Hispanic males. We’ve seen our graduation rate rise steadily over the past seven years, growing more than 37 percent since 2011.

Freshman OnTrack: More freshmen are on-track to graduate than previous school years. In 2018, the percentage considered on their way to earning their diploma is a record high of 89.4 percent. This is a nearly 30 percent improvement since 2011. The research-based measurement tracker is the single best indicator of whether or not a student will graduate.

Record High Math Scores and Strong Reading Gains: More of our elementary students than ever before are meeting or exceeding national standards for math and reading scores.

Record High College and Career Credentials Earned: This year, more of our graduates earned college and career credentials than ever before. The credential attainment jumped by 3.2 percentage points this year, with 46.6 percent of 2018 graduates earning at least one early college and career credential.

Scholarship Dollars Earned: We’re so proud of our students. The class of 2018 earned more than $1.3 billion in scholarship offers, and that’s $90 million more than in 2016. They’ve been earning more each year. We credit this increase to the district’s expansion of postsecondary initiatives and college-level programming such as IB, STEM, AP and dual credit and dual enrollment in schools across the city.

NOW THOSE ARE FACTS!!!

CPD wants a 16% raise? What's that? One percent for every bullet that JVD pumped into McDonald? How about you earn your raise like Chicago teachers have? Maybe merit pay for CPD-- crime has to stay at certain level for any bonus or clothing allowance, etc.

Here's another idea since I know research isn't SCC commenters' strongpoint. The reason teachers pay 2% into their pension instead of the 9% is because CPS offered that IN LIEU OF A RAISE many moons ago. In other words, there was no "raise" but CPS offered that option to save the city and the teachers money in the long run. This is why the teacher's pension fund was at 110% in 2003 until Daley gave the city a 10 YEAR HOLIDAY from making any contributions THEN he borrowed from the teacher's pension fund for his Olympic Village project in Washington Park, etc. that never came because we never got the Olympics.

In other words, don't be pissed at teachers because we played the game the right way. We negotiate our power...you negotiate for money. The problem is, money can always be taken away.. Power lasts MUCH MUCH LONGER.

You are welcome for today's lesson... now get ready for some more OT.

Give the teachers everything they want and add the following to the new contract:

All CTU members' children must attend a CPS school to increase the federal funding

All CTU members will be given 1 year to move back into the city and provide an increase in the tax base, I'm sure the suburban living city teachers can find the housing clause helpful to get back here.

Now the Teachers are part of the solution and not the problem

They offered us 16 percent, FOP tried to get slick and we ended up only getting 11.5 percent.

It’s not about the money, or the kids. IT’S ABOUT INCREASING UNION MEMBERSHIP.

All the talk about class size because it affects education is bullshit. They want the city to be forced to hire more teachers so there are more people paying union dues. Mark my words, all the union “leaders” who haven’t seen a classroom in a decade are all looking to give themselves big raises. Imagine that. What do you do for a living? “I’m a union rep.” These unions are worthless, just like the FOP who couldn’t stop Rialmo’s firing or a host of other injustices. But your union reps eat steak in Vegas either way.

Personally I hate the unions. There’s not a thing they’ve done for me. They were useful when they helped secure a safer workplace, a fair workday and fair pay as well as taking care of wives when husbands were mangled or killed. What does the FOP do? You guys are topping out at $86k to work in the ghetto, have your days off cancelled, merit hack political bosses fucking you left and right, work with shitty equipment, and are forced to live in Chicago where you wouldn’t even send your kids to the public schools. And now they’re on strike, so hey you can’t anyway. How much of your salary is spent on private elementary and high school? 10-20% when all is said and done? (Like the mandatory “fundraising” or you pay more scam). And your kids in the Catholic schools will NEVER see a cop. If there’s a school shooting, good luck.

Leave CPD. You can go to a host of suburbs and make $90k + on patrol. With better pensions and insurance. Better equipment. Better schedules. Your bosses might still be morons, but they’ll have passed a test and not promoted by their racial or ethnic background or gender. A take home car if you are a deputy or trooper. If you would just give up beating your chests and telling everyone in the bar “I’M CPD!” as a means of getting laid, you would see there’s a whole other world. And despite what you may think, still plenty of real police work to do.

Please. For the love of god my fellow officers, just leave that shithole department. You deserve better and so does your health and marriage and kids.

Could the changing rules for giving scholarships have anything to do with it? Or the fact that state universities are required to accept the top 10 % of CPS graduates.
You mention AP classes. Known a few students that get A and B’s in AP , classes, but couldn’t pass national test for AP credits. How is that recorded. Just having more students taking AP courses and passing them doesn’t mean anything with passing the national tests

Hey, Rahms missing finger, your facts are out of whack just like your mind. First off, there are 50000, yes fifty thousand, less students then there were a decade ago. Therfore, there should be less teachers not more. Want more social workers and nurses? Get rid of some of the 25000 teachers then. Your union talks about class sizes. Guess where they are the highest? In the most affluent neighborhoods in the city. Why? Because working families who pour time and money into those schools make sure they succeed. The teachers are doing nothing better or different there, they just have better prepared students. Guess where the drop out rate is the highest. In the newest built schools in minority neighborhoods. Where the parents don't spend a minute volunteering or fundraising and just EXPECT everyone else to take care of it... Sound familiar? Guess what else these brand new built schools in minority neighborhoods have? Small class sizes. In some cases 12 to a classroom. One high school alone on the south side has an enrollment of 118. Yet it's fully staffed. Why? Your union never seems to want to Mention this. Gee, why not, could it be that they would be exposed for their nonsense that they spew? Your brainwashed into believing your making a difference. You aren't the solution, you're the problem. You're unrealistic demands, which will cost taxpayers 2.5 billion, will bankrupt CPS. You're a fool to believe that's sustainable. By the way, being proud of 78 percent graduation rate is pathetic. That is one in four students failing. Only in your mind is that not only acceptable but exceptional and something to be proud of. Sadly, you are one of the ones teaching the children of the city of Chicago, with a 3/4 graduation rate.

Sharkey claims it is for the children but then when a teacher is accused of sexual misconduct with a student he and the union refuse to cooperate with the investigation.

Sharkey and the union claim it is about the children but when the Sun Times reported on a sophomore student in Austin High School who was unable to read or perform simple mathematical problems after being promoted every year that he was a student in the Chicago Public School system Sharkey and his minions could not explain how that happened and fought any disciplinary actions against his members.

Remember taxpayers the strike is only for the students.

Disrupting the lives of other citizens that have nothing to do with their circumstance. Blocking streets and generally being a public nuisance. They can't get blood out of a rock. I have a teaching degree and am glad I chose to be a Chicago Cop instead. Watching the news these past 10 days about the strike has shifted my opinion about CPS teachers forever. They are a disgrace. It's no wonder our students don't graduate and are ill prepared to face life. Civil Disobedience Classes. What a bunch of low IQ morons!

CTU upper echelon are saying that they have Lightfoot backed into a corner and on Sunday the city will agree to the teachers demands and Sharkey and the CTU have agreed to not gloat and just move on. The CTU gloating or not will have made the Mayor look like a stooge. Sunday surrender by the city and Monday back to school for CTU and the kids.

Nurses, counselors and extra add-on's are designed to increase membership and dues. Anything to do with housing insecurity for CPS families and our members is all Bull Shyt Socialism.

Achieve housing goals and city housing policy that creates affordable housing and support legislative efforts to enact rent control is a Shyt sandwich. Are you real estate agents or teachers. CTU take your first bite of the Shyt sandwich.

Institute a program that financially helps new teachers purchase a home, please have another bite. As for hiring staff to support CPS families in danger of losing their housing, please have another and the same for hiring full-time School Community Representatives. Oh yes, lets not forget to fully fund Section 8 voucher programs and expand Airbnb housing rehabilitation to properly house 15,000 homeless students by 2020.

By now CTU has consumed the entire Shyt sandwich, crust and all. No worries for tomorrow there will be more Shyt sandwiches for you to share with your brother Socialists. Can't wait until Monday when you 'll really make fools of yourself. Be sure to come to the dinner table right after the demonstration; we'll have more of your favorite sandwiches for you.

Wow, thanks for those wonderful facts
Maybe CPS should be used as a model for all school systems in the United States.

CTU is showing you in the FOP how you do it AND IT IS KILLING YOU!!! The teachers used to have 30,000 members. Now it is at 25,000. What did CTU do? Organized Charter school teachers and brought them into the fold. CTU organized SEIU's deal so their contract and ours would have to be settled at the same time. CTU has been a political force in both Chicago and in Springfield. Maybe Preckwinkle didn't get elected, but several alderman, state reps, and state senators have been elected and are currentlynwriting legislation that benefits us. This strike has been planned for six years!!!

As far as schools closing, that is a terrible argument because it really destroys communities and brings poverty. When schools close, your job as police officers get much harder. Some areas will never be gentrified. A community needs a school or the houses' values droo and the businesses go away.

When it comes to graduation, 4 out 5 students isn't bad considering CPS is required to take everyone according to FAPE law. How privileged it must be to work at a Catholic, private, or Charter school where they can remove a student at any time for any reason. CPS is not so lucky; therefore, teachers deserve the combat pay...AND we will get it.

I never hear anyone on here complain about the bloated amount of administrators in CPS who make nearly $200,000 a year who come through once a year to do "inspections" on everything. Certainly some of these network chiefs could go. While we're at it, I never hear anyone complain about what doctors or lawyers make. What about pro athletes or the owners for that matter? What about when Lightfoot gave the Lincoln Yards project (by Lincoln Park/Bucktown) and "The 78" project in the South Loop 1.3 BILLION dollars of TIF money (OUR TAX DOLLARS) to billionaire investors. Why can't they use their own money, since they will obviously reap the lion's share of the profit? According to city law, 51% of a TIF surplus goes directly to CPS. Now Lightfoot declared a $300M surplus when she gave her budget. CPS got $163M of that. Can you imagine if the surplus included just those two deals I mentioned earlier? A $1.6B surplus would have given CPS $850M to work with, and this strike would have never happened.

You see, people on here love to criticize but never give any other city worker credit when they are actually making a difference. Now it's "Oh they graduated but can they read"? "Oh they took AP classes but didn't pass the national tests". What "National Tests" are you referring to? Some of you are such experts in education, I suggest you drop the vest, take off the steel-toe boots, and get yourself fitted for some khaki cotton dockers. You are ready for the classrooms!

Whether you like it or not, CTU will win this strike. Whether you like it or not, Lightfoot will bow her knee to the almighty union. Whether you like it or not, the FOP will drop the ball again and you still won't have a contract by the time we are ready to strike again.

Methinks you need some more union training and less police training. If you are smart, you will ask questions and learn how to do this correctly so you get what you are worth. STOP SETTLING!! The second option doesn't seem to have been working too well for you and it has made several of you bitter...and being a person with a bitter attitude will not relate well to interactions in the community.

Jus' sayin

You know how there's a widow's pension? That part of the pension goes towards the widow pension and if you retire not married you get that portion back or added to your pension?
How about if you're sending your kids to private school you provide proof every year and at least for the years your kids are in school you don't get cps taxed? I'm sending 2 kids this year to Catholic high school and it's over $25,000 combined.
Or how about my sister who never had kids has to pay for CPS delinquents.
My neighbor who's a city employee not 1st responders her department offered them 5% raise and no more comp time.
Fuck the teachers. The strike will be over as soon as Potus' plane leaves O'hare. Who you shitten.
16% over 4 or 5 years may not sound like alot but if you're making 75k that's a $12,000 raise over that time period that's pretty dam great especially for the product CPS turns out! 180 days a year give me a break greatest part time job ever except the alderthiefs.
I went to Catholic school we had 40+ every year in every class and if you got snarky the priest or lay person hit you over the head with a stack of rulers. And at our 30th anniversary everyone was a productive member of society.

Very few people realize what teachers pay towards their pension. They pay only 2 percent a paycheck towards their pension fund while every other city employee ( all departments) pay from 9 to 9. 5 percent per pay check towards their pension. City picks up the rest, no wonder their fund is almost broke and they blame everyone else. Most overpaid unproductive city employees.

Groot says they ain’t no money going to be put up that means the city isn’t won’t pay a higher share of pension costs.
I know new hires sine the 2015-19 Contract are paying 9% into pensions.

They are paying the 9%, but get a 9% stipend in their pay to make up for it.

As part of a one line opening bit of humor, Chance made sure to remind the audience and viewers that last year he donated 1 million to CPS....and .....he was happy to report that it fixed everything! Lots of Laughter followed. He might as well of pissed that money away. Oh wait! He did!

There are plenty of teachers to take our place???? LOL!!!

Where???????

You realize there is a teacher shortage right now...you realize that CPS requires a degree, specified certifications for the areas taught, and certain state/federal exams that have to be passed in order to legally be in the classroom. People keep talking about Reagan and the air traffic controllers. Reagan replaced the air traffic controllers (a job that only required a high school diploma) with about 8,000 military people for a few months until others could be trained. Ironically, they hired most of the people back after a year but it took nearly 10 years for the air traffic control to get its numbers back to where they were before the strike. In other words, our jobs cannot be replaced because the requirements are too specific and require too many certifications to just find people off the street to "replace" us.

I am amazed at how clueless most of you are on this issue. Teachers cannot be replaced... legally, we have the right to strike and cannot be fired for it. The courts would be so tied up with lawsuits it would make everyone's head spin. So, if you believe we have Lori by the short hairs, you are correct. If you imagine that we are making everyone grab their ankles, then so be it. I just wish you had this same righteous anger when our city allows Google to operate tax free in our city. I wish you felt this way when Rahm was building bike lanes and stadiums for Depaul with our TIF $$$. I wish you felt that way when developers took billions of our tax dollars for their projects that will solely benefit them in the long run. Where is your phony outrage then? If you want something in this city, you have to take it.

Now that you've been schooled, get some rest. I have a feeling you might need it with Donald Trump and the national media in town tomorrow...just in case some group might want to bring national attention to itself over an issue that it deeply cares about.

CHICAGO MAYOR LEARNING THAT EVENTUALLY, YOU RUN OUT OF OTHER PEOPLE’S MONEY:

Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot is dealing with a 12-day-old teachers strike that features a contest between the most radical union in the U.S. and one of the nation’s most radical mayors.

It’s not going to end well for her.

When the strike began she told the teachers “there is no more money.” All that did was whet the appetite for battle by the teachers who are now almost certainly going to get almost all of what they want.

Lightfoot is being hit over the head by reality.

* * * * * * * *

Chicago reached that “upper bound” years ago and residents have been voting with their feet. In their eagerness to sate the appetite for tax dollars, public unions’ ever-escalating demands have made Chicago the only major city of the top five to lose population over the previous decade.

Now use the video camera to our advantage , any verbal assaults , aggravated battery (pushing you , spitting on you , throwing objects at you , resisting arrest are recorded . also notify zone on radio , Ive just been battered , assaulted and give a quick description , add we were ordered not to make arrests .Not all , bur some spineless , coward supervisors will say no arrests . Fine .
When you return from detail , complete all necessary paper work , it's all on video cameras and recorded by news media . Let CPD's crack Detective Units follow up . So deeeeeeeeeply dishonestly honest!!!

Or, if you prefer, so deeply honestly dishonest!!

To Read.

THAT is ALL any of CPS student age need.

NEED.

To read what they, under the guidance of their parent(s), whatever they choose.

To think about whatever they choose to read, under said guidance.

To write about whatever they have chosen to read, under said guidance.

To do the math on life, under said guidance.

Said guidance NOT being your guidance, at all.

Help, aka teach, your students the 3 basics.

THAT is ALL anyone wants of you, and pays you to do.

THAT is ALL you need to be qualified to do, as that is all anyone with CPS aged children want you to do.

NOTHING about you is "for the children".

EVERYTHING about you is all about you.

The indoctrination cabal has been very successful these past 50+ years.

They have sold their scam of "college bound curriculums for everybody!!!" for their own indoctrination cabal purposes.

Thus, we have been scammed.

What the indoctrination cabal fears most is the following evolution occuring in actual education:

1. K - 5th grades = solid Three R's = To Read, To Write, To Do the Math.

2. This leads to 6th - 8th grade = Thinking, Calculating, Considering, Comparing, Understanding, Learning How to Learn. And beginning to Grow the Fuck Up.

3. 9th & 10th grades become the determiner times for each student to define their own, individual talents, propensities, native skills and capabilities, discovering their soon adulthood qualities.

4. Which then determines which, of two general paths, each is both most suited to and, as budding adults, chooses to travel: Skilled Tradecrafts or Professions most requiring boo coo knowledge.

5. Thus, grades 11 & 12 are practical prep years for each of either one of these two primary choices. Practical prepartions. Hands and Brains on for Skilled Tradecrafts. Brains on for boo coo Professions.

6. College level then becomes fullboat Skilled Tradecrafts or full boat Professions' required knowledge.

7. The quantities of sub categories of these two Prime categories is abundant. Each individual student, budding adult, chooses best choice for his/her native abilities, talents, propensities, capabilities, etc. The end of "required" subjects not relevant to chosen future adult education path. Also the elimination of indoctrination cabal bullshit.

The above removes the indoctrination cabal's scam from our nation's education of our future.

The above restores our nation's education to be for our nation's future, not as it is now, for the benefitsbof the scammers of the indoctrination cabal.

MAGA shows the way.
