Weed Lottery

  • Long before the lottery to determine which marijuana dispensary companies would get to sell recreational pot in Chicago next year, the room in City Hall was packed, with business owners, company reps and executives filling every seat.

[...] Though Mayor Lori Lightfoot has preached equity, the crowd was not diverse. It was an overwhelmingly white and male group decked out in business suits, casual sweaters with their company logos embroidered into the front, and hoodies representing elite Catholic high schools.
And guess who isn't happy?
  • As it all unfolded, Black Caucus Chairman Ald. Jason Ervin, 28th, stood at the front of the room, surveying the process and silently taking it all in. Not all of the people crowded in the room, taking copious notes and whispering to their team members, were actual dispensary owners.

But with the exception of a few women and two African Americans in the room, most of the representatives for marijuana businesses were white and male, Ervin pointed out.

“I wanted to see for myself how many applicants and where they were deciding to cite their locations. And it proved what I thought: Our communities are going to get left behind,” he said. “This will probably generate a billion dollars’ worth of sales in the city. With no African American participation, I just think that’s a problem that needs to be addressed.”
We'll just leave that "participation" comment alone for now.

There are piles of money to be made in political contributions and kickbacks on the horizon and goodness knows how many future FBI investigations. It'd be a shame if Ervin didn't get his chance at the federal pen, especially with all of the current members of the Madigan cabal under sealed indictments.

I hate weed, I hate what the democrats are doing to this city/state with weed legalization, but I'm not going to allow others to make bank while I get stuck with a big property tax bill and not enough revenue to pay for it.

They buy and sell all the weed they want in the ghetto right now with impunity, they don't need a dispensary. Unfortunately they will reap the benefits of the tax windfall which the legal dispensaries will generate. On a side note, the groot is losing her marbles and is starting to sound like gandhi.

AlderTool Jason Ervin— why are 99% of the business in the neighborhoods not run by black Americans?— I refuse to say “African American” because the representative people on the continent of African are not black. Ask the Libyans, Egyptians, Algerians, Ethiopians, Eritreans if they are of the same cultural heritage as black Americans. I guarantee u they will be pissed off. Ask a Nigerian if they have anything in common with black Americans, the Nigerian will be pissed as well. Right now as we speak the Nigerians are genociding each other over there. Look up the Congolese civil wars... the biggest war in African since world war 1 which involves nations from all across the continent. They are getting their war on.

His folks have controlled the weed trade in city since well... About time his people got some competition. But not to wordy his folks will benefit com the competition as more people get hooked they will soon get tired of paying all the taxes on their new vice and go where the prices are lower. Hence those dollars will be winding up in the communities hands. The real problem with community outlets is the bangers will not let those stores stay open for very long, or, will become a constant robbery target.

Seattle has 25,000 young adults under the age of 30 who are homeless and addicted to heroin, methamphetamine and the like living in tents year round urinating and defecating in the needle strewn streets begging for change to feed their addictions. Glorify the drug culture and look at the predicted outcomes.

Just like the south of the border drug cartels, Chicago "investors" line up to make profits living the high life while damning young Americans to life a life similar to those lost generation of Americans in Seattle. Seattle is a democrat run city just like Chicago. Drugs, addiction, fast cash and despair! Big money over the welfare and concerns of the American youth. Money talks. Casino like cash and the promise of tax revenues for a recklessly spending government is a priority. By any means possible.

What about local leaders developing a plan to economically rejuvenate our local economy so everyone can prosper? Not just the connected via tax revenues and government controlled industries.

They sell weed on 70 percent of the blocks in the ghetto. In front of every corner store and st every gas station. Years and years and years of scamming millions upon millions of weed money has funneled into the pockets of the ghetto dolks(or people) who have taken that money and lived lavish lifestyles blowing it all on toys, cars, houses with 10 TVs, trips to Vegas, nightly trips to horseshoe casino and the clubs downtown blowing all that money. The lavish lifestyle ends when they end up catching a case. They go away for 2-6 years and boom.. they are forgotten about, and the next crew steps up and scams the non taxed weed money. Now with legal weed, watch for illegal street sales of weed to get stuff now. The state does not want street sales anymore because every bag of weed sold on the street is lost tax dollars. You watch, ANY street delivery sales of weed wether is 1 gram or 100 grams will be a felony in this state for delivery. Can’t lose that tax money. Stop letting the folks in the ghetto scam their way to riches through selling weed on the street which perpetuates violent crime. Crush them and lock them up!

I am not surprised by this...To establish, build, and run a highly regulated business requires planning, deliberation, diligence, and hard work...and that is just to get through all of the paperwork hurdles.
One (of many) things I also wonder about is this...How will the local 'men of commerce' who work the corners going to react to these new businesses, with LOTS of cash carrying customers around and cash piled about? Will they simply adjust their prices to be competitive, or will they take umbrage to the competition and do what they can to eliminate it?
Somehow, I do not think reaching that magical 500 number will be a problem next year.
Stay tuned...

Proponents of legal weed sales always over estimate and greatly exaggerate the ecomnomic benefits of legal weed. The reality, in states like Colorado and California, is the weed is so heavily taxed and regulated, that customers just continue to buy their weed on the street, at a cheaper price.

Sounds like you should be mad at the black community for not showing up, not at the white people who did. All they had to do was drag their happy asses out of bed. BUT another commenter made a good point, they sell weed with impunity now anyways, there’s no punishment from the courts unless you have over like 500 grams of it, even then it’s minor. I have a prediction for when the weed dispensaries pop up. The same thing in California. They government is going to crush them with licenses, fees and non sensical rules. This is going to make it hard to be profitable and compete with black market growers/sellers. So if the government wants their new legal weed sales to make money and bring in taxes, they’re going to have to crack down hard on illegal weed grows and sales. As well as deregulate the legal market. California is having this problem, almost none of the legal weed guys make a profit. And they’ve gone hard after illegal growers. Democrats of course don’t see this problem coming down the pipe because they hate capitalism and don’t understand that their shitty way of big government stifles everything.

Community street corner weed will always be cheaper, plentiful, tax free.

Community competition should become be fierce since the areas of operation are always sketchy, many will flock to the outskirts and pay a little more for the safety benefits. Which leads to the the feral dillers to travel and set up nearby these dispensaries and in 016, short handed already will be seeing a spike in all sorts of associated crimes from robbery to corner poaching retaliations.

All those who won their lottery locations will be taxed to the high heavens, paying plenty for security and will feel the wrath of politicians when their community demands a fair share cut. Wonder if Uber will do a DopeDash, WeedHub, sort of delivery option to make up for the Groot RideShare tax increase. No guarantee that legal weed shops are going to be only stocking controlled home grown products. Could be a front for cartel inventory routinely brought in under NAFTA but might suffer under USMCA.
Competition is going to be fierce.

Heck, if a nail salon couldn’t get any community respect, what can weed shop expect, coming in at $20 gr./$300 oz. on the avg. low end excluding federal, state, county and local taxes.

I think this legal weed revenue scam bullshit is going to more problematic than it helps, especially for everyone that doesn’t use it.

And now you see the problem with legal weed. When it is legal, it becomes a business, which means it's a job. Which means someone has to get up in the morning, put their pants on, and go open the shop. There are books to keep, a storefront to maintain, customers to serve.

Fuck!

That all sounds like just too much work. Better off putting your pants half way on, operating on a street corner, literally killing the competition and the customers.

That's the circle of life right there.

Yeah, check with Colorado because you are clueless. I lived on the Southwest side for 20 years, and Colorado for about 20. You have people capping each other over weed in the street. Who benefits? Crime here is VERY low. EVERYONE carries, concealed and open. We buy weed at a dispensary, it is about $100 an ounce. Street dealers can't afford to sell it that cheap. I can't grow it that cheap. 90% of the customers are 60 years old +. The recreational trade is for tourists. You pay a high price. We don't.
BTW, did you see that cop cap that fool in the Colorado Springs recently? What happened to the Cop? Nothing. They have full support here when they need to take out the trash.
