Whoops

  • A Chicago police officer was taken to a hospital Tuesday afternoon after accidentally shooting himself during a drill at O’Hare International Airport.

The officer was participating in a drill about 2:15 p.m. at an administrative building at O’Hare when his firearm accidentally discharged and struck him, according to Chicago Fire Department and police officials.
This is why training drills are usually done with either unloaded/flagged weapons or red-man plastic guns.

Get well soon.

At some point, the officer has to take back HIS real weapon. And you then just hope he doesn't shoot himself with it like this guy.

live fire exercises are something that trained cadres should only be allowed to do. Really can't imagine that level of liability in a civilian capacity. Live fire drills must anticipate casualties; it's part of the cost of doing business in a combat environment, and even then only in elite units. Could not imagine live fire drills without having put hundreds of rounds down range beforehand. Someone really screwed the pooch on this one

A number of years ago, when the Academy, along with the Patrol Division, ran SVIP drills across the city every few months at various schools, we had a strict policy of holding all weapons during the drill. The Academy Range personnel would set up a holding area to secure all weapons. Every unarmed officer during the drill had to wear a colored ribbon (color was changed for every drill) on their arm so that we would know that the officer had turned in his/her weapon. Even Dept. personnel that were only observing the drill had to be disarmed. We did maintain armed officers on the perimeter for our safety. You just do not conduct drills like that with live weapons.

Guns don’t “accidentally” go off. He might’ve accidentally (negligence) pulled the trigger, but it’s all on him. The airport is a good place for that knucklehead. No officer would want him as a partner.

A little over two year ago it happened at Near North. Officer shot the wall. Not sure what happened to him. If I had to guess, I would say - nothing.

Get well soon. Absolutely no excuse for this to happen, the stupidity is astonishing. But, still hope you’re okay with no long lasting affects. Other than embarrassment and always being known as the guy who shot himself in LEMART. That’s an affect you’ll deal with forever.

"His firearm discharged and struck him." I hate when my guns get a mind of their own and do shit like that all by themselves. Who's writing this crap?

How about: "He accidentally pulled the trigger on his loaded gun and the bullet struck him."

It did not accidentally fire. His finger in the wrong place caused it to fire. What a tool. Glad he shot himself and not someone else. Should be immediately terminated.

Wait a minute when I took this training we were all issued weapons that were not functional how is this allowed to have a live weapon during this training what kind of instructors do we have? More realistically what kind of idiots are we hiring on the Chicago Police Department? Thank Almighty God he didn’t kill himself or shoot someone else another cop or during training.

It wasn’t during a drill. Fucking media again not putting out the right info. It happened while re holstering at the gun locker after the class ended. Lucky there were two paramedics and instructors with tourniquets in their hands at the time. Accidents happen.

There's a reason that accidental discharges are rare-firearms rarely go off "accidentally", and if they're being handled properly, no one gets hurt.

On the other hand, negligent discharges happen with some frequency. The key word there is "negligent".

Just so it’s a little more clear, this was at the end of the day when you get your equipment back to put on to leave for the day and not during training exercises. LEMART does thorough checks for any weapons before training exercises because safety is taken very seriously.

Who’s in charge of the all-management F-Troop?
Nincompoops running the show.
The Academy Range will likely have to permanently assign a team to conduct training or at very least, be on premise to supervise it.

(Unsubstantiated, but rumor is that after the loud report, the Sgt immediately told everybody to run away and hide before the Aviation Security gets all the good spots.)

Why during LEMART training do I have to surrender my firearm? I can fight with a junkie high as a kite with my gun secured in my holster, but NOT at LEMART training??

I'll bet it was a striker fire.....

I'd like to see stats on striker fire vs. non striker fire vs. revolver accidental discharges.

Because there's force on force scenarios at the end. It's some of the best training we've had on this job in the last 20 years.

Striker Fire Weapons Are Very Dangerous. Striker Fire Pistols Should All Have Slide Locks. Yes, I Have Heard All The Arguments, "They Will Only Go Off If You Pull The Trigger" ! Truth Is: In A "Real Life" Situation, You Can Pull That Five and a Half Pound Trigger Pull, "Un-Intentionally"

Issue the tool a revolver with only one bullet for his uniform pocket. Better make that one round a blank. There problem solved. Better yet let him become a school crossing guard.

I took LEMART almost 3 years ago. I was just notified to go to PSHQ today, and today only (on my RDO), to get my department issued IFAK. This after I had to wait a couple months to replace items used at a shooting scene. Then, when I went to the academy to get the replaced items, I was told the department did not have the pouches. So I had to find one myself (thanks to Hero Uniforms in 001) that fit on my vest.

7000 kits will be issued to patrol first in the next few weeks. Waiting for the city to issue you life saving equipment for yourself instead of using 1/7th of a uniform check to buy ur own is a joke.
