What's the point of having laws if politicians are telling us not to enforce the actual laws:
- Mayor Lori Lightfoot and interim Chicago Police Supt. Charlie Beck issued a statement Thursday clarifying the CPD’s new pot enforcement plan after the Sun-Times reported that Chicagoans could be still ticketed for using marijuana in backyards or on porches or balconies that are visible to the public when the drug is legalized next month.
“The Chicago Police Department recognizes that an individual using cannabis in their own backyard or balcony poses no direct threat to public safety, and no resident should be arrested or ticketed solely for such a scenario,” the statement reads. “Any characterization to the contrary is simply wrong.”
That statement, however, made no mention of whether smoking pot on a front porch would be treated differently.
In an interview, CPD spokesman Anthony [Google-me] said that the new law does allow officers to issue citations for some use on private property, but that won’t be a priority.
We used to think that there was a legislature that passed laws and htat lawmakers were responding to the concerns of the people who voted them into office. After laws were passed, the executive branch (through the police force) would be responsible for enforcing the laws and the judicial branch would apply the penalties.
But that was before Crimesha took it upon herself to rewrite all the shoplifting and theft laws of Illinois, and apparently Groot and Beck are taking their cues from her. You know what else used to be against the law? Drinking on the public way in a bus stop. But now we guess you can do that along with licking and spitting on the police and potentially costing two cops a bunch of time in the penalty box.

How are my kids supposed to play in the backyard with the neighbors smoking next door? It’s bad enough when they do it inside their house in the summer & it stinks up the neighborhood when we have the windows open! What has this city turned into?!?!

Chicago taxpayers will spend $2.5 million to compensate the families of two young people— ages 18 and 24 — whose deaths are tied to allegations of police wrongdoing.
The largest of the two settlements — for $1.3 million — will go to the family of 18-year-old Tevin Jones-Rogers, who was killed in a crash during a 2017 police pursuit.
On April 28, 2017, police officers said they were responding to a call of shots fired at around 8:45 p.m. when they saw a white Ford driving away from the 12700 block of South Halsted Street.
The Ford, which had been reported stolen, ran a red light and struck a red Toyota Corolla at the intersection of 127th and Throop streets, police said. The impact caused the Toyota to crash into a 2003 Saturn.
Jones-Rogers was driving the Toyota and was pronounced dead at the scene, according to police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office. A 20-year-old man in the passenger seat of the Toyota was also injured.
In a lawsuit filed in Circuit Court, Tammi Jones, the teenager’s mother, accused Chicago Police officers of pursuing the Ford at high speeds despite the risk of injury or death to civilians, and recklessly disregarding the safety of others.
The 18-year-old driver of the Ford was taken into custody after the crash and charged with a misdemeanor for criminal trespass to a vehicle.
So if the average citizen can bend the rules a little why can’t cops smoke it? As long as you show up to work in good condition it shouldn’t be prohibited. Weed is safer than the big pharma meds.

From what I've read the landlord needs to put it in writing if they forbid pot smoking in their rentals. No recreational marijuana law requires landlords to allow pot smoking in rental properties. In fact, Colorado’s Amendment 64, California’s Proposition 64 and Alaska’s statute AS 17.38.120(d) all specifically allow a landlord to forbid it. Laws in Massachusetts and D.C., allow tenants to smoke pot unless landlords specifically prohibit it in a lease clause. So I'd expect the liberals in Shitcago will welcome the pot smoking in their building with open arms. Perhaps HeeHaw Beck and the Groot and his wife are planning a pot party. And don't forget to invite the Slumpin Tahoe Special Ed, he needs a friend about now.

Near north Chicago landlord here. All my signed leases have strict clauses about no smoking indoors of any substance (weed, tobacco, misting resin with solvents, vaping and the like). Outside areas non smoking clauses are the same, again including weed.
I emailed all tenants this week and got them to confirm back, email reply, that they acknowledge the statewide change to all recreational cannabis of 2020 will have no impact on the building's prohibition on smoking of any sort.
Not all landlords are jackass liberals but yes, all does not mean there are not enough who don't care or would allow this harm to occur on their properties. Messed up but a cloud of gross weed smoke might be rolling into many parts of Chicago.
I shudder at the liability of allowing some tenants to freely smoke weed and then if one tenant commits a crime (rape, property damage or so on) what that might mean when the lawyers seek someone with deeper pockets to blame. Matters like that are won in court but the cost to defend is great and the matter is annoying. Best preempt it.

If I view a passenger in the car smoking weed but not the driver, can the driver be cited for having cannabis in their car? Or just the passenger written a anov for smoking in public?

I mean as if they have a right or something to stink up where ever they so desire. The stench doesn't stay only in their backyard you know. And why should a neighbor have to tolerate the smell. I just want to say that I agree with the posters saying that weed stinks. I enjoyed many nice highs in my younger days, but never got used to how bad pot smells. The smoke to me is far more offensive than cigarettes in public ever were. And the smoke/stench seems more potent & skunky than it used to be 20 years ago. I'd much prefer edibles.

I fucking care! I was out raking leaves in front of our house and the people across the street were inside their garage with friends, laughing and giggling like a bunch of little kids, smoking some weed. It wasn’t long before the skunk stench wafted across the street. I had to go inside to get away from the choking stench. I guess this is going to be the new norm? One of my favorite things about Pot being legal is that I can call up all the Jehovah Witnesses in my area and invite them over. When they arrive, I greet them dressed as an Altar Boy with a huge bong in one hand and a greased up 12" dildo in the other. "Welocome, welcome, I'm ready to be saved". When they call the Cops, I greet the Cops in the same outfit. They really get a charge out of it. Legal. As long as you don't light up the bong until you are back inside. Awesome.
