Not a Good Meeting
- Chicago Police held what was believed to be its first online community policing meeting Thursday, and it was marred by racial slurs, porn, cursing and middle fingers.
A serious community discussion on Zoom about how gang members continue to terrorize the Northwest Side also devolved into people throwing gang signs, hula hooping and getting their cat into their Zoom square.
After participants filled the comment section with racial slurs and profanities, organizers of the call had to shut down the chat portion of the meeting and apologize.
“I’m sorry about all the idiots,” State Rep. Jaime Andrade, who helped organize the Zoom meeting, told participants.
Amusingly, if you ruin any sort of basic web-search about the Zoom platform, you soon discover it owned and run by Chinese companies and in most cases, routes massive amounts of data through mainland China. Hardly the type of program you want to put any sort of important information on and probably not one you want to host community meetings on.

I attended that meeting. Yes, there were some jerks but they did manage to shut them down fairly quickly. Any open forum on the internet is going to have the same issues. Your bigger concern should be the alderman who thinks that the recent shootings in her ward are all the result of the lack of violence interrupters and social service programs being limited by the virus shutdown. Bottom line bad people are taking advantage of a situation. Being poor or of a different ethnicity doesn't isn't an excuse to break the law. Plenty of poor people are law abiding citizens.

The re-offenders — just over 3 percent of those released — include a Rikers Island inmate initially jailed for allegedly setting his girlfriend’s door on fire and choking her mother, who was released early only to return to the Bronx apartment and allegedly threaten to kill the whole family.
Among the city’s worst repeat offenders is Darryl Naser, 25, who was rearrested five times in April alone after being released March 27, records show.
Naser, who police describe as a “transit recidivist,” was first jailed on charges of grand larceny and possession of stolen credit cards before his coronavirus-related release. He was arrested again April 1 on a burglary charge, and on April 4, April 6 and April 8 on drug possession charges.
He was released without bail each time, as he was after he was picked up yet again at the Herald Square subway station on Friday and charged with third-degree criminal possession of stolen property, court records show.
Police said he was caught stealing a purse.

Speaking as an R&D guy at a fairly large company, nobody in the corporate world actually cared about Zoom until a slew of gushing news articles extolling its virtues, followed by a bunch of "hey, I heard that this newfangled Zoom thing is really great, maybe we should use it instead of our normal tools?" conversations.

CAPS is a "feel good." It gives the community somewhere safe to vent their feelings about their shitty neighbors, rather than actually DO anything about them/accept responsibility for improving their neighborhood, and gives them an opportunity to blame police for all their bad decisions and ineffectiveness at fixing their own problems.
