Third Death

  • A third Chicago police officer has died from complications stemming from COVID-19.

Ronald Newman, 59, died Friday morning, according to Mayor Lori Lightfoot. He had been a Chicago cop since December 2000 and was assigned to the South Chicago patrol district, which covers an area from 75th Street to the southern edge of the city.

He had also worked briefly for the fugitive apprehension unit. He received 137 awards, including two department commendations.
Rest In Peace Officer Newman.

May God test his soul. His death and many others is totally the fault of Lori and Pritzker for not finally cracking down on the south and west side “community “ which refuses to stay at home and continues to congregate, deal drugs, ride the redline to go north to commit crimes, have house and hotel parties, and as usual violate the law. And Lori allows it because it’s her base.

Hate to say this, but police officers are the blue canaries, always putting their lives on the line, always going into danger, getting hurt or killed, much hatred and disrespect from the many, public, media, ministers, ACLU, and the City of Chicago, and numerous years without a contract. RIP Officer, as was stated earlier, anybody going out and doing anything is a fool, going on 3 years without a contract and using out of date material is insane. All so Lightfoot can stand up there fight back her "crocodile tears", she couldn't care less about CPD. Also, wait till more Officers start dying, the city will soon start making them "in the performance of duty", not in the line of duty. Good Luck to all of you out there, look out for yourselves and your families.....Glad to be retired

Officers who have between 5-10 years make a measly salary of $84,054 and 10-15 years make $87,000. This job has become more dangerous than ever before with so little pay!!! Buddy of mine who sets up the tables for the CPD test at McCormick Place said he has never ever seen so many empty seats (less than half full) for the previous test in 2018. No wonder nobody wants to join the department! The risk isn’t worth the pay! Many Officers are retiring earlier in life and moving out state so they can try to live comfortably. If they don’t raise the pay significantly, we will be operating on a very small department in a very dangerous city! Less visibility more crime...

Who wants to get sued lose everything after you are retired for 20yrs like the guys who worked under Burge hostile juries that hate the Police? People see these lawsuits against Officers decide it's not worth it. Police should have immunity from lawsuits like the Judges and States Attorneys.

Some of you guys truly need a reality check. A salary of 87k roughly puts you in the top 13% of all wage earners in the US. If that is not enough then you have to reevaluate your spending. I have some news for you, most of your white collar friends are lying about their salaries and very few are touching or going over 100k. They also dont get OT or the benefits you get. To the responder to this. You are a big asshole. Your wife is probably a teacher sitting home on her ass. The point of the post that you responded to wasn’t to just bitch and complain. It was to point out the vast disparity in how teachers are tested vs police. Yeah, we could’ve been teachers but somebody also has to be the police. No one is saying teachers shouldn’t get raises but they get a raise after 11 months without a contract and a whopping one at that- while police are filling their obligation with no raise in sight. You truly are a stroke, if you are the police and it’s exactly people like you we don’t need on the job. We know this job comes with duties & obligations, but are we just supposed to lay down and not ask for what’s fair?

You are partly right. However you have to figure in the cost of living (Less house and smaller property equals more money). The fact that 9 percent right off the top of our check goes straight to the pension. (the one that everyone thinks we get for nothing.)(How many people save 9 percent of their salary?) This is before deferred comp, state and federal taxes. Paying higher rates for car insurance. 100 plus dollar city stickers. 110 plus dollar license plates. Higher local taxes like cell phone and entertainment (Check your Netflix bill to see how the City screws you.)
This doesn't include having to send your kid to private school if you are not lucky enough to get them in a good CPS school. I'm not saying this to complain. I actually like Chicago, its the Politicians, State and Local, I cant stand. What we make on paper and what we really earn are 2 different things.
You cant compare us to the private sector who can live where they want. I know Residency is part of the job. However when I joined free healthcare at 50 was part of the job. Free prescriptions was part of the job. No merit on promotional testing was part of the job. I could go on.
Oh and don't let me forget about Social Security. While we may not pay into it on this job many of us have it from other jobs. But because we get a pension we are lucky to get 30 to 40 percent of what we are entitled to. Thanks Rostenkowski. I hope your enjoying Hell.

$87k after 10 years if you get there! Seriously??? This is Chicago where a 1 bed and 1 bath apartment rents between $1300-$1900 depending on where you want to live and you have to pay for parking if you don’t have outdoor parking available. Sure if you want to go live in South Lawndale I’m sure you can find a roach free 2 bed and 1 bath for $1300-$1500 but who really wants to live there??? If you want to live in a nice safe neighborhood the average house sells between $400k-$500k now a days, which is around a $2400-$2800 mortgage payment + Utilites!! Who wants to rent for 30 years?? Cost of living in Chicago is a lot higher than most places in the US. We rank one of the most expensive cities to live in right now behind Miami FL. Coppers aren’t saving enough because it’s TOO expensive to live in Chicago. There aren’t enough people taking the test because they don’t want to RiSK there lives for a medium salary....

RIP Officers.

Food for thought; In the Bible Jesus said that those not with Him were against Him. The same powers that be that refuse to provide proper PPE and consistent protocols are those that have disallowed a useful cure.

https://www.ocregister.com/2020/04/16/coronavirus-elderly-oc-couple-recovers-swears-by-controversial-treatment/

These elderly patients with previously compromised pulmonary systems were saved by their MD son, with the same treatment that the Chinese have been using for years. I'm sure the fact that this is a generic medicine instead of the multi-billion dollar pay off that the Pharm corporations is a coincidence, as is the fact that the FDA is now requiring clinical trials instead of allowing CHO to be used on acute patients. So we now are sent into harm's way with inadequate measures and the knowledge that hospitals will watch us die rather than using a tested treatment. Makes one wonder who's side the FDA, et al. are on. It sure as Hell isn't ours. Those that deny us the hope and reassurance of treatment, while holding out for vaccines and such are definitely not with us.

Be safe Brothers

There aren’t enough people taking the test because they don’t want to RiSK there lives for a medium salary...."

well then move your fat useless ass to somewhere wherw doughnuts are cheaper

""""Officers who have between 5-10 years make a measly salary of $84,054 and 10-15 years make $87,000.

Everything is rigged, yes the job is dangerous but appreciate what you have.

Yeah if you live in the Hills of Arkansas your living large but try keeping up a decent house in Chicago. With a family. Have you lost your mind?

____

For all of you who think that you are entitled to earn enough on this job to pay for a $400,000 house, you are delusional. Attain the education and earn the skills to get a higher paying job. I have news for you; real masters degrees come at a cost. They can take two years to complete, full-time enrollment. You will be investing up to 16 hours a day in studying and required assignments (5 to 6 days a week). That is right, it is not like the police academy.

The degree better be from a reputable school. After you earn your degree, you can expect to make in $80s or $90s (thousands). And that is being a bit optimistic.

Try this thought experiment. If you worked at McDonald's, then would you complain that you cannot afford a $400,000 house and that McDonald's has an obligation to pay you enough to afford such a house (for flipping burgers)?

Those are my two cents.

Appreciate what you have, good advice. Still Chicago is a cesspool of corrupt democrats and working for such people is not easy for the average Joe. I'd rather make less and be happy in my job than be ordered about by a bunch of incompetent and lazy merit bosses that got there by gifts due to color, gender or favors/special study groups and so on. Of course the same type crap exists everywhere to some degree, good employers are hard to find. Perhaps worse today.

About the money and the city, What he said. And those city and county taxes, taxes, taxes. Big city prices and property taxes. And look at the state of the school system, yet the teachers got a 16 percent raise. Given not earned. With a wife and kids the money goes like water down the drain. Oh yes, certain folks don't have to worry about being cut off from such things as water but others, well betcha they wouldn't be so kind if I just stopped paying because others no longer have to. With the virus they will really need to step up the taxes. While King Groot gives free stuff to the illegal aliens. Larry has multiple psychological problems as well as being just plain dumb. The perfect leader for the crooked city. Groot puts on her thinking cap and asks herself, I wonder if we can tax air. Certain folks air that is.

Enter Superintendent Snobby Brown. His highness won't speak to the peasants. Yet another pompous dimwit on deck to reek havoc with certain blue shirts. Merit will comeback like a laser beam boring a still larger hole in the department. Escape the egomaniacal folks steering the ship if at all possible.

FOP. demand these stations are closed to public , no homeless sleeping in lobby and deep cleaned .
Where is the bullet proof plexiglass for front desk .
no more in person reports , keep citizens in a closed off area , take reports over telephone , if we need to see documents , they can be sent in a tube like the banks use .

How many more CPD will die from the coronavirus, especially when officers were tested well over 10 days ago and still don't have their results! So sad that our officers aren't properly protected!

I agree that the cost of living and taxes are high in Chicago but why sign up for a 400-500k house if you cant afford it? You dont need a house to raise 1-2 kids. Salaries in lower cost of living cities are proportional so you wont be getting ahead there either. I really cant feel bad for the coppers with no student loan debt, boats and luxury cars. I cant think of anyone with an Associates Degree that makes 72k after 18 months at their job. Maybe a handful of really gifted IT people. Beware of grass is greener syndrome, nothing is what it seems...

85% or more of the reports can be made over the phone and NO reason to waste a beat car down on a report. 911 should be for EMERGENCIES: in progress, person shot, burglaries, robberies, domestics, traffic accidents with injuries, etc.,

Houses on the East Side(10th ward) are not 400k and higher. It's still a decent neighborhood where lots of cops, firemen, and city workers live. You need to get away from downtown and the northside. The East Side is where you should look.

As SCC posts always say "follow the money"

Hydroxychloroquine sulfate (aka Malaria drug) + Z-pack = $100 for a 5 day treatment. Plenty of research, Didier Raoult, Dr. Zelenko. Media doesn't like to talk about that! Media Push for remdesivir $1000 per course.

Hmmmm?
