- Chicago police are setting up checkpoints throughout the city both to remind people about the statewide stay-at-home order during the coronavirus outbreak and to “show a strong police presence” in areas hit by violence.
A department memo obtained by the Tribune calls them “seat belt safety and informational” checkpoints, and adds that the “goal of this mission is to engage the community in a positive and informative manner while providing a visible police presence in areas affected by violence."
Each of the city’s 22 patrol districts is to have one checkpoint each day, staffed by a supervisor and an unspecified number of officers, according to the memo. Any officer “interacting with any occupants of a vehicle will don a mask and gloves,” according to the memo. Each checkpoint will last up to an hour.
The Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 7, which represents rank-and-file police officers, said the checkpoints conflict with the union’s guidance that officers “only be engaged with the public when you have to."
Aren't there available billboards? Radio and television PSA's? Twitter, Facebook and all manner of social media? We find it had to believe that there is a single soul in Chicago that doesn't have an idea that something is going on involving a communicable disease.

It’s all a way to jam cops up and make the blue shirts the bad guys as harassing again the permanent victim class. You know why? Because you have a mayor and social justice warriors who won’t call it like it actually is. Certain communities don’t follow orders. You didn’t see the mayor setting up informational checkpoints to all the lakefront joggers? No, she played hard ball with those fitness threats to society. Shut it down in a day. Now go to 011, 006, 007, etc, Mx. Mayor. They aren’t uninformed- they just aren’t interested in social distancing. As all the other laws & rules the vast majority of society follows- the rules don’t apply to them. That attitude was created by years of “feeling sorry” for people and telling them that they have no agency in their own fate.
What if some citizen who's going about his business encounters one of these unconstitutional checkpoints and says "fuck this", doesn't stop, and drives around it? We're not going to chase.
Are we actually going to write a report? Issue a ticket? Risk getting sued when this citizen shows up in court with an attorney or two?
Some questions that ought to be asked:
1. Are our state legislators essential workers? During the present crisis, the Illinois General Assembly has repeatedly canceled its session days in Springfield despite the fact that the Capitol complex has been closed to the general public and only employees, legislators and staff are permitted to enter the buildings.
2. Are the legislators on furlough? Should their pay be suspended since they are not working?
3. Under the Illinois Emergency Management Act, 20 ILCS 3305(7), Governor Pritzker's emergency powers are not to exceed 30 days. How is it that Pritzker is talking about extending the shut down?

I spent several years on a Haz-Mat Squad & unfortunately almost NO ONE is doing the right things or wearing the right equipment. Question after each contact on these checkpoint Charlie’s are the officers changing their gloves/mask (by the way have yet to see an officer W/ the proper mask) after each contact? I am sure the answer is no but not because the officers don’t understand or care but because the city isn’t giving Officers or F/F’s the proper PPE. Do the “bosses” realize that if the officers 1st contact W/ people is someone W/ the virus if they don’t change the gloves/mask they MAY pass it along to everyone else they come in contact with???? This is NOT a knock on the officers in the street this is to the bosses who arbitrarily have decided to put every officer between a rock & a hard place. Let their junk flop in the wind. Officers take care of yourself the city won’t. God Bless all of you!

Whoever the boss was that came up with this nonsense is a complete dumbass. Think about the officer that will be at the drivers door having conversations from two feet away with people who are potentially infected. Why piss off the citizens who are already having to wait in lines at grocery stores and every other store for that matter by making them wait in yet another lined formed by the police so they can be “checked.” Officers are already over exposed in their everyday travels throughout the day. Why expose them unnecessarily for something that is only going to piss off the public.
A brilliant idea by one of our command staff. A few things were left out, like the yellow safety vest will be worn by all people participating in the softball safety mission. The vest covers up the name, star number, and bwc of the officers. The sgt will also have an i-bond book on scene. Why an i-bond book for an informational checkpoint. Who is the mush who dreamed this one up.
‘Stand Back, Jack!’ To alert certain cultures that a crisis is at hand and their behavior is paramount for not catching/limiting the spread, every urgent message needs to be reduced to a nursery rhyme level to penetrate some minds...

My son works for a suburban dept. and is told do not do any unnecessary contact with the public which specifically means no tickets.
I work for a security company with many suburban and county guys from all over and they're told to keep to themselves.
I drive I80 and I57 and troopers are just parked with there lights on.

To the person who was on the hazmat team....I agree with you 1000%. Everyone is missing the point. The way to get and transfer this virus is through touch. All the mask wearing and socially distancing feels good but it's useless when the person who is ringing up your groceries at Marianos doesn't change gloves or sanitize the ones they are wearing after every customer. If they got their gloves contaminated by touching items that an infected person touched 50 customers previously they are transferring the virus to the items of every customer from that point on. If a copper comes up to my car and wants to hand me something I will refuse to take it. It doesn't matter if he's wearing gloves and a mask. I don't know how he put those gloves on, where they were stored or what he's been touching with them before he got to my car.

I assume that it is the Sgts. that are running these check points. If so, why aren't the Sgts. just saying no to the Command Staff? Do what I did when I was working and was forced to run those bullshit seatbelt missions. Call X amount of cars over to the location of the seat belt mission, tell the Zone to hold them down for an hour or so on a seat belt mission. Prior to that make sure your guys know to bring a cup of coffee, soda,water whatever, a newspaper, magazine, book etc., when they hear me call them. When they arrive, nobody get's out of the car. An hour later we go clear and I turn in my report indicating we saw no violations. Any Sgt. with half a brain would not jeopardize the health of his people for this bullshit.

Well, why didn't you just say no to the command staff? Did you have a lieutenant watching your mission on a pod camera? They are getting away with doing these because they're calling them seatbelt missions. While on the seatbelt mission, you hand out flyers to whomever rolls down their window to take them. You didn't do your job, and you had no repercussions. Nice work. And now you want others to go one step further and just tell their boss no? Just enjoy your retirement instead of coming on here to tell your war stories about your seatbelt mission defiance. Any retired Sgt. with half a brain would find something more constructive and fulfilling to do with his time. We've all done "seatbelt missions" and other missions by just getting an event number. You're not special. This is a different department from even a year or two ago, and only getting worse. These missions don't jeopardize anyone more than if they were handling any other job. This is actually safer, because they're mandated to wear gloves and masks, unlike when they stop any other car, handle a domestic in a house full of unknown people with unknown health issues, transport a prisoner or regular citizen somewhere, sit on a hospital detail, sit in a stranger's house because it's a crime scene, or because there's a dead body there of a person who died from unknown causes. It's a stupid fucking idea that never should have made it past the "I have an idea" stage, but it's now an order, much like the rest of the nonsense we have to do every day. You have to pick your battles, and this one isn't worth it. So we hand out some flyers to anyone who sticks their hand out and we're done. No great tragedy.
