Nice Expressways and Roads

So a surprise April snow caught IDOT and CDOT with their collective pants down. Not a single salt truck was on the road overnight, leading to this unsurprising result:
  • Fifty vehicles crashed in a massive pileup Wednesday morning on an icy Kennedy Expressway near North Avenue, sending over a dozen people to hospitals with minor injuries.

All lanes of the expressway were closed for hours, while Illinois State Police said it responded to more than 80 more crashes on Chicago-area expressways that were “covered in sheets of ice.”

Three semitrailers and 47 other vehicles piled up about 4:40 a.m. on the Kennedy’s inbound lanes, state police said.
We don't know what watch everyone works, but have you noticed that with less traffic on area expressways, the number of assholes doing about 100 MPH has skyrocketed? We aren't as pure as a west side altar boy - we keep up with traffic easily - and we're being passed like we were standing still most nights.

When can we expect some media criticism of Pritzker and Groot for having salt trucks sit idle in the yards while the Kennedy could have hosted a Blackhawks home opener?

You are absolute right about the idiots flying around on the highway. We were just talking about that at work and we’ve all realized it.
There was a bad 2-car rollover accident on the Ryan a few days ago at 31st street too.

While I don’t blame ISP for going fetal and not pulling traffic during this virus situation, but now the expressways have turned into the autobahn- except half the people are driving on suspended licenses while high on weed and closing in on triple-digit speeds.
With no enforcement threat, it’s a recipe for disaster, be safe all!

No offense SCC but when you've WASTED as much of your life as this "Asshole" CRAWLING in fucking stop & go Kennedy traffic for the last 20 years because yuppies don't know how to fucking enter & exit the highway, or move out of your way in the left lane, etc. etc. ...Then when you FINALLY get a chance to actually do 100mph (knowing ISP has been told to stand down) without having to deal with all the "57 is above the limit and that's as fast as I'll go" real ASSHOLES .. then YOU TAKE IT!! That is the ONE thing I'm dreading when this is over, the return of traffic. There may be shots fired on the Kennedy when I'm forced to awaken from these dreamy empty roads (Although they seem to be getting busier & busier by the day)

These area speed limits should ALL be raised to 70+mph when clear...You know it's rare when everyone can do 70 mph, so when possible, allow it.

A decade ago, while responding to a felony-in-progress, 23rd Dist. Sgt. Alan Haymaker was killed on LSD near Irving Park Rd. when he skidded on black ice into a tree. Had the location been salted by S&S, the Sgt. would have survived.

There is no excuse for the city's failure to salt the icy stretch of the JFK at North Ave. to avert the 54 vehicle crash on the JFK. Unlike Sgt. Haymaker, those transported to the hospitals survived.

I typically do 75-80 if the highway is wide open. Which seems to be a little faster than most, but I’m not blowing by people doing that speed, and plenty of people are keeping up and still passing me. So I feel somewhere between 70-80 is where most people are. I’ve been passed several times while doing 80 like I was in reverse. They other driver had to be doing 100-110. If one person goes to switch lanes without checking their mirror (which is inexcusably all the time) that person going 100-110 is dead when they try to swerve out of the way because a guy going 45 cut into their lane. You’re made up mostly of water people, crash at 100+ and all you can hope for is that you’re not mangled too badly to where you can have an open casket.

SCC readers may remember or not but, 15 years ago during an early evening blizzard, a SWA flight skidded off a Midway runway crashed thru the fence & across the road bordering the airport. No injuries aboard but tragically, a little kid killed when the plane slammed into his dad's car.

Drove home from downtown later than night, NB Kennedy Xway @ North Ave WAS a hockey rink. Roadway raised along there - effectively a bridge - & we know those freeze first, and it DID. 30 minutes riding the brake pedal to get back to level ground. Sphincter tighter than a sprung bear trap the whole way.

So when I heard the traffic reports this AM, the chain reaction pile up did not surprise. Seeing tv video the CFD honcho tho in a mask, on scene extolling, "social distancing" kinda did. Is what it is ...

I was on the Kennedy for over an hour trying to get to my south side unit, really appreciate that by the way, when I got stuck in traffic due to that 50 plus car pile up. I did not see one salt truck not one! They also have decided not to rotate the express lanes back and forth for the rush hour flow keeping them open in the outbound direction, if these lanes were open and salted it would have easily handled all the traffics due to the accident and probably made the accident less dramatic.

Oh well leaders with out a clue made bad decisions is what we’ve learned to deal with.
