- One Summer Chicago brings together government institutions, community-based organizations and companies to offer over 30,000 employment and internship opportunities to youth and young adults ages 14 to 24.
Hopefully, this is just a clearinghouse for jobs and not offers of summer employment by a city so broke, that it is passing a temporary $100 million budget with the promise of a bigger bond issue at a later date (current bond rating - Ninth Circle of Hell and digging a Tenth).

Hey they are going to pay down the debt with towing and storage fee's for church going people and fines for those that are not following the gestapo rules the democRATS are forcing upon people of Illinois while numbers are going down and other bordering states are opened up! The city is mismanaged. I guess this is to keep the young adults busy so they stay out of trouble. I will guarantee they are going to stop or slow hiring of police.

The Public School Teachers have been getting paid an entire year without working.What is a couple of summer months for their students?Bonus.the children get to learn how Cook County works with a full pay no show job.
Maybe some of the Public School Children could intern at a Cook County Assistant States Attorneys or Public Defenders home where they could learn how to get paid and not have to leave your home for over 2 months.

You both are absolutely right!! Who said SCC wasn't educational. But unfortunately I still need to get a summer job because if I get caught by the police doing crime. The news media can use my high school graduation AND summer job i.d. photo to portray me a good citizen. And my defense attorney can say I was turning my life around. "Also your honor. They paid $20/hour to high school students to "garden" at street-lot "urban farms". An adult farm worker, working at farms providing food to Americans, doesn't make half of that, and will be fired for not working hard enough. Here in Chicago, some kid gets paid for just showing up, or to be more accurate, "just punching in", work-ethic irrelevant. Ridiculous misuse of taxpayers' money.
Yes, Lightfoot's notion is "better pay them, so they don't come to downtown to cause mischief". Thing is, a student who barely performs at CPS high school, will absolutely not "perform" at a stay-at-home make-work fake job. City will probably gift these summer student workers yet another taxpayer-provided computer, so that said "work-from-home" job can in theory be done. More "throwing money at the problem", without consideration of effectiveness, or ramifications. If your average public student learns, via CPS, that minimum effort (just showing up) results in "B" grades and social promotion, resulting in a HS degree, but inability to perform at college freshman academic standards, so resulting in more need for "remedial education at community college", then more "B" grades and social promotion, with minimum effort and "just showing up", resulting in a 2-year degree, and inability to effectively function to expectation in a corporate business environment, but leading to more social promotion and minimal performance on day-to-day basis. Because, you know, they expect to be excused, and coddled, and paid for minimal work-effort.
