The results will ensure that no other city will propose such bullshit as disbanding or defunding. The carnage is overwhelming with a sizable police force, imagine none. Look at the Cook County Sheriff Merit Board Section. Sheriff Dart last several cases of "excessive force" were overturned and officers were cleared from firing. The cases were all complete garbage. If not for this blog comments shaming Darts board for unwarranted firings, Vince Winters, Kim Widup and the rest of the crew would of continued to be rubber stamp. But they got caught and shamed and are finally doing the right thing. Dart is trying to fire anyone he so can to appease the mob or some have claimed to free money from his lawsuit infested budget. Finally some justice for the wrongly accused officers.
Watch the videos. Some where officers attacked while dart tried to have them fired. Look at the hundreds cases where the board fired officers in past and were overturned by the courts, with hundreds of thousands back pay. How much ot did Sheriff pay to cover manpower for all these false firings. Been following those cases for years and if you were a black or hispanic officer the firing rate on mostly fraudulant cases was over 95%.

There is no way the majority of the people in Hennepin County will allow Minneapolis to be unpoliced. 1.2 million people live in Hennepin County, only about 400,000 of them live in Minneapolis. The sane majority should prevail.

This is the third strike for Minneapolis. First, the pandering to the looters and rioters while for three days W-T-F, they destroyed black, hispanic, asian and white owned businesses. If I owned a business in Minneapolis that was destroyed, I would look to the suburbs to rebuild. The police in Edina may not be able to protect your business, but they are likely to let you and your Roof Korean friends protect it yourself.

The same people wanting the police defunded were mostly in the group calling to "burn it all down", who enabled and encouraged the recent events, and voted for the politicians who encouraged and allowed it. The same people who, when it was their property or lives that were being endangered, called for the police or the National Guard, even as they watched in glee as other neighborhoods were burned and wrecked, as other people were terrorized, beaten, and even killed.
Not that long ago the police in some cities (many of which are considering defunding the police) were very...active...in arresting moms with their kids at the parks, restaurant owners, people protesting the lockdown orders. Many seemed quite...vigorous in their enforcement of the mandates given to them by their mayors and governors.
The same police now are kneeling and washing protesters' feet; have been lying prone or kneeling in submission in front of rioters who have burned and looted the city.
Many of those same police voted for their city government leaders, past and present, who have created this mess. The police union has funded quite a lot of the same government officials who have created this mess and now say "defund the police", who have encouraged the police to do nothing to protect and serve innocent citizens and their property.
You get the things you enable; you get the things you allow. Citizens and police should probably remember this from now on.

No police might just work in Minneapolis. Its not really a city of 500,000. Once you factor in the immediate elimination of those people who just need killing, plus the usual innocent bystanders and the authentic crime victims, i think the population will be a whole lot less. After the first wave of killings, the population might get down to about the population of Mayberry. And one thing we know about Mayberry, North Carolina--there wasnt much policing going on, what with Sheriff Andy going fishing all of the time and bumbling Barney Fife not carrying a loaded gun. But at least there was no moonshining going on so Minneapolis has that to look forward to.

As far as the Hennepin County Sheriff's Office taking over, that would be a monumental task. The Hennepin County Sheriff has an extremely small "patrol" division. Most of their deputies work in either courts or the jail. The current deputies patrol the remaining really small towns in the county and or townships.
The other thing I predict is that other police departments in Minnesota will not be eager to hire former Minneapolis Police Officers. They will have a difficult time getting approval from the mayors and city councils in the suburbs (which is a current practice) to hire former MPD. It's an ugly situation. (BTW, I am former Minnesota law enforcement so I'm not just pulling this out of my ass).

It is possible for Minneapolis to get rid of its police department but either of the two ways gives the city far less control which, as I gather, is not what they want.
The city can form a joint police department with an adjacent municipality. Governance and assets would be shared.
Or the city can contract with the sheriff or another agency. In this case there is no meaningful control. Yes, they could pull out of the contract but the cost of doing so is prohibitive as they would have to rebuild the department's assets and infrastructure (stations, vehicles, radios, uniforms, etc.) from the ground up. County contracts work well in small communities (such as under 2500 people) but not so well as size increases.
So, if they want more control over the police department, the two options available under Minnesota law won't provide it.
Did anyone ask the social workers they plan to use to responcd to calls if they are OK with this idea? My guess is, they won't be and will insist on armed protection to respond, as will EMS and fire. They'll end up keeping the police, but a whole new level of bureaucracy and expense will be added, with social workers doing ride alongs when police respond to calls. The gov't will NEVER cut an expense, they'll just add on more layers and tie everyone up with more red tape, its what they do.

While I understand where you're coming from, this still isn't going to end well. Hennepin County is a large county that includes not only Minneapolis but most of the first and second ring suburbs, whose citizens and land area greatly outsize that of Minneapolis itself. The already heavily taxed suburbs will not be keen on financing the massive expansion of the sheriff's office that would be necessary for keeping Minneapolis from burning itself to the ground.
For what it's worth, I'm originally from the South and am somewhat ambivalent about policing albeit for very different reasons than that of the Free Shit Army. But I'm also a pragmatist and I know a recipe for disaster when I see one. The next step will probably be Target (whose corporate tax revenue keeps the lights on) pulling out of their downtown headquarters. They recently built a massive campus on the north edge of the county with room for expansion, so it will be very easy for them to do. Wells Fargo will also accelerate their ongoing gradual relocation to South Dakota.

One of Thomson’s Camden policies, nicknamed “Scoop and Go,” may be at work here, which mandates officers to personally drive victims to the hospital if ambulance wait times are too long. That saves lives, without really addressing the source of the violence itself. (Another possible factor: More victims are just getting to the hospital faster by calling an Uber.)

Funny how the cities with a massive welfare state have all the problems. I recall social workers and the like advising their clients of the Great Northern Welfare State back in the 90s. Leave one's low paying locale and get the good stuff from Minnesota. All those soon to be democrats in a gold rush for welfares gibs. And now we see the results of that Great Society. There will still be cops. It will just be different than the way it is now.
Hopefully they find an effective way to deal with drug addiction, homelessness, and mental illness. That will eliminate a lot of need for police services and interaction with people police are not well suited to deal with.
The result of this will simply be the transfer of some Law Enforcement duties from Municipal Police ( e.g., City of Minneapolis) to County Agencies (e.g., Hennepin County Sheriff). This will, by necessity, mean much Lateral hiring of personnel, new uniforms, etc., An Example: In some Canadian Provinces, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police are, simultaneously, Federal, Provincial, AND Local Law Enforcement.

Please disband the Minneapolis PD. I can’t wait to see what happens but I’m afraid they will back off because they won’t put their money we’re their mouth is.
All those Minneapolis City Council police bodyguards and drivers would be out of work also.

"Defund Police," "Disband Police" are probably the most powerful "wakeup call" that there could be to keep the presidency in Republican hands.
