I see from this blog that Chicago teachers understandably don't inspire a lot of love, but let me share an educator's perspective on this situation.
Like teachers across the country, I am held responsible for what my students learn (aka state testing results), regardless of their personal situation. Around here, my salary can go up, down, or stay the same, based in large part on how the kids do on the almighty test. Yup, my income can decrease due to someone else's performance. (Unfortunately, there's no OT or comp time to make up for it.)
You guys and gals in blue see the "home life" that way too many kids have - absent father, single-parent household, either working 3 jobs to make ends meet OR on every bennie available to them, farmed out to relatives or foster parents... not a good situation to encourage learning. The same curriculum isn't taught at every school by every teacher, so the kid falls behind every time they change schools. Besides, who can focus on homework when there's drugs and guns to attract their short attention span? Why bother studying for any career when you can just jack someone else out of their cash and live the high life? Can anyone in the household even read to help the kid out? Is the parent too stoned to really care about whether they actually go to school? How many are being raised by elderly grandparents because both parents are locked up? (I realize it's not likely, after all it is Chicago.) How can I hope to make a kid care about their education and a future when their environment's mindset is to gun down anyone and everyone for the sheer joy of it?
The country has gone to shit and this role-model baby daddy is just one of a million examples of why the next generation stands no chance. Upstanding citizens such as Mr. Scott are too preoccupied to care about anyone except numero uno. (Groot falls into this category as well, apparently.) Chicago really has no future with the young ones living like this. My heart is with the innocent children caught in the literal cross-fire... I'm so sorry that it's come to this for LEOs, just beating your head against a wall due to the political "leadership". I have so much respect for every one of you, risking your lives for ingrates that don't seem to care whether you live or die.

I empathize with you and you obviously get it, however, I have to ask. Surely, you are just one of many teachers that feel this way. Surely, you understand that your students would be much better suited for life's realities if they learned the three "r's" that we were taught. But yet, the CPS system thinks that it's more important to teach revisionist history and stories about police torture. You and those who think like you are part of a union that has become remarkably socialist. Why cant you stand up to this union and demand that it leave politics aside and look out for the well-being of it's members and the students? I'm asking a sincere question.
