Ten recruits and an instructor have tested positive for the Kung Flu since the Academy reopened last week.
Leaving aside that these recruits are close to the best shape of their lives and aren't really in danger of succumbing to anything worse than a week on the Medical, the reaction of the Department is going to be telling.
You see, the NYPD isn't the only one suffering from a massive wave of retirements. The CPD is already seeing a big uptick in supervisory retirement as the PBPA Contract was settled - check the AdMin fax messages. There have been between five and ten people leaving every week. Add in the changes at the top and a bunch more are going to see this as their careers ending. Plus, the PBPA negotiated an window for white shirts to leave under the terms of the old Contract before the end of the year and that makes a big difference in the health insurance costs.
So will the Academy plow through the illness wave?

This isn't the military in time of war, the city cannot deny your request for retirement. What is happening in New York is the flood of retirement requests have overwhelmed the people who process the requests, so it is taking longer, much longer and the city is in no hurry to add more people to the processing unit. Just a temporary bottle neck
The academy is a breeding ground to spread the virus. They cannot maintain social distance in a classroom, the gym and the range. How many asystematic recruits are attending class? They do not have the ability to quarantine themselves for 2 weeks and miss all of the classes. Are they checking temperatures every day? Recruits will be afraid to admit they have symptoms and miss classes. I feel for the staff who must have close contact with recruits and other staff.
I wonder why the FOP 7 website hasn't published any lists for retirees since Feb 2020. I also wonder if the academy is telling the Noobs that they will be picking up trash in the ghetto's of Chicago for a living. This caps thing just wont die. It was, and always will be a stopgap measure for politicians to fall back on when "Enforcement" of the Law is Non Existent and crime is rising. It costs multiple millions, and takes waaaaay too much time training in the police academy. I recall about 50 hours worth when I went through. I'm sure it's higher now.

This shit is getting hard to keep up with! If you come to Illinois from another state, especially the high flu numbers state like Florida or Texas, do you still have to quarantine yourselves? Heard it was 11 recruits that got the Corona Virus. Barely a week and 11 infected. All from the academy also hiding the fact that Metro Students had tested positive as well. They’re really sending these kids into a hotzone of contagion.
Interesting article there from Epoch Times, many valid points. Seems to get a little preachy towards the end IMHO, expecting an extremely high level of self-awareness and inordinate abilities to remove one's self from subjective experience. If we understand ourselves so very objectively, as put forth in the article, we likely aren't having these types of issues...
And across the board, in any profession or even job, one is encouraged if not required to give "110%" so any semblance of work/life balance is at cost to professional success and development. (The unspoken main reason for that supposed gender gap in pay, too. Shhhhh)
Finally, anyone who's gone through any type of counseling knows they are never looked at the same again. The stigma can and will easily follow one beyond the current position, even organization they are in. Even when changing occupation, unless self providing healthcare. Blacklisted for life...
There's a lot more to it than the article considers. Written by an academic who's last hourly position was perhaps in high-school, god bless them

Total BS. You can’t deny someone retirement or quitting.
Why are they still sending these recruits to sit all day and do nothing at the district? We have FTOs that have no trainees but there's a half dozen of these recruits that sit in the station watching movies and playing on mobile devices. They should be at the very least learning how to do a report. They've had more than enough downtime to study and pass the state exam over the past 5 months of this stupid lockdown, so certify them already and be done with it. The new breed have been programmed to not use their gun so firearms qualifications is a moot point.

Why don’t they just allow the recruits to stay home and they can get their training via “ZOOM” meetings with the instructors. They can just promise to workout on their own time. It needs to be shut down for 3 weeks, have every instructor, recruit, civilian and officer who attended promotional or in-service training tested ASAP while the building gets a deep clean.

No one is being denied to retire..even in New York..if you would read the whole article, in New York they were being overburdened with the paper work..they just limited it to accepting so many applications a day...the city does not approve your retirement...the pension board does, again. for you people who cannot read a full article, all New York did was limit the amount of retirement packages it would accept on a given day
All who died had other serious medical issues...the CDC said not 3 million Americans have had COVID, but probably at least 30 to 50 million....the mortality rate will be that of a bad flu season...not saying this is not bad and that some healthy people are dying. but not enough to justify what they are doing

Make an OSHA Complaint!
If I see some 1st grader picked up by a pervert and drive off I'm going to do what I am trained to do: Let dispatch know so they can inform the real police, Illinois State police.
1. We are not trained in vehicle pursuits.
2. We will be sued for anything that goes wrong, even if a pedestrian sprains their ankle getting out of the way of the criminal driving, guess who's paying that pedestrians medical bill after and guess who's getting charged criminally after Foxx gets through with immunity? Not the criminal.
3. Our motor vehicle pursuit policies gives us ZERO options in stopping the fleeing vehicle: You can't Pit, You can't Box in, You can't collide, You can't overtake them in any way, You can't Roadblock them. They don't even have to speed away. They can just drive normally and you can do nothing but follow until the Real police show up, I.E. Illinois State Police who do have authority and training to perform maneuvers.
Chicago Police has these prohibitions because we are woefully undertrained to do any of those maneuvers. Where did you get trained to perform high speed maneuvers or ram a fleeing vehicle or perform roadblocks or caravan or force collisions? I wasn't trained in any of it and neither are any of you.
Never chase. I don't care what you saw or what dispatch said or what the idiot lying civilian said to the call taker. We are security guards. We report the crime to the real, trained police and let them deal with it.
It should surprise no one that if you give people an incentive to retire early (like cheaper health insurance), that some people will take it, who would otherwise have not retired.
A lot of employers do this to thin the ranks. It is usually pretty effective. Even the military has done it from time to time.

I’m caucasian, born and raised from the burbs, didn’t fail my psych test. What are you implying? Because I sure as hell am enjoying this job everyday I can. And they will lift the residency rule because Groot wants her “prized” citizens living in the Gold Coast and cop neighborhoods where she knows they can’t afford regular/face value of rent and mortgages. I’m just waiting for her to explicitly saying she wants people living in certain areas on tv. She won’t because she know she’ll lose no matter what and we will win no matter what.
