The Chicago Police Department has 847 sworn vacancies that could be reduced to chip away at a $1.25 billion shortfall in the city’s 2021 budget, aldermen were told Thursday.
Mayor Lori Lightfoot has, so far, resisted the movement to de-fund the police that has been sweeping the nation since the death of George Floyd. Chicago is the nation’s largest city to give the cold shoulder to those demands after police cuts announced in New York City and Los Angeles. But that doesn’t mean the Chicago Police Department’s $1.7 billion budget will be spared from the budget ax.
During a joint meeting of the City Council’s Budget and Public Safety committees focused exclusively on CPD spending, Budget Director Susie Park told aldermen there are 847 sworn police vacancies and all are under the microscope to chip away at the shortfall.
How many years did we post about the downsizing of the Department? And the rearranging of deck chairs that Rahm did, pretending to put 1,000 officers on the street by disbanding street units? And how many openings were just posted for what can charitably described as an "undesirable" District to be in? Thirty-five, wasn't it?
Does anyone doubt that next year's twelve-hour days and cancelled weekends aren't going to double simply because there aren't nearly enough officers on the street? And so will the injuries that will result from being undermanned?

Work most holidays and 12 hr days with days off cancelled most of the summer with little notice. Work years without a raise and then get a smaller % than other city unions. Oh yeah, you might recieve a portion of the underfunded pension.
Heard Jeannie Ives on the radio today, said that Indiana has millions of dollars in surplus revenue that they don't even know what to do with. Because the Republicans got in there and balanced their budget. Illinois hasn't seen a balanced budget in 2 decades. And ILs next year's spending bill is millions higher. Lightfoot agreed and added stipulations that two of her civilian people become the top deputy dogs directly under Sean. Cut the amount of aldermen
Cut the amount of exempt jobs from all city departments.
I am sure there are units that can be consolidated , even with a manpower cut. Reduce sworn office staff in districts and HQ ( often talked about, but never really done, too many officers with influence ), reduce the number of gold stars by making units run by sergeants and lieutenants as other large urban departments do. Take away most of the take home cars. No overtime in admin units ( plenty of theft of time over the years). Proportion district manpower by square miles and population and not by calls for service and crime rate. NO BODYGUARDS for anyone other then the mayor and reduce that number.No detailing out of police officers to any agencies except other law enforcement. That would be a start

As a citizen I weep for Chicago’s police officers. I have never seen such horrid senseless treatment of a police force that is asked to do so much for a city. You guys are put in the worst situations constantly and for unknown reasons you are hated by Lighfoot and many of the other politicians for unknown reasons. I could understand making cuts to the police force if there was peace and no crime and disorder but there isn’t and it’s because of Lightfoot. I am very concerned about Chicago’s future under Lightfoot. There are countless other wasteful positions that she could make cuts like CPS, seeing that the schools are empty and enrollment is way down.

Up to a ten percent cut in any organization is just trimming the fat and useless. After the ten percent your getting into the meat of any organization including the CPD. So start by cutting 7% headcount from ALL city offices including CPS, CFD and CPD. They are also mulling over how high the tax increase will be, not if there will be one just how high it will be, 25-40% across the board on all fees and taxes is the argument.

There are several people hired by City Hall to be “advisors” to Brown. They will be Lori’s pipeline. Reducing the number of Aldermen could spell disaster. Imagine if one guy was the Alderman of downtown, lakeview and west loop, and some other guy was the Alderman of the entire west side. Reading about Philly. 21st mass shooting this year. The total number of people shot thus far in Philadelphia is past 1,472. That was the total reported during all of 2019.

Dont count on killing it in court any longer. The court system will look very different on the other side of COVID. The plans have been drafted and ASA’s will no longer be free to issue subpoenas to their police friends. All subpoenas will be vetted and the days of being signed in all day are over. Court games will be dealt with in a totally different manner going forward.

History is repeating itself! We had this issue less than 10 years ago when the war cry was look how much overtime these greedy coppers are getting because the department was paying out tons of overtime. It is cheaper to pay overtime than to hire someone fresh, who is paying into the pension fund. This is one of the reasons the pension fund is in the position it is in today. This and bad investment decisions.

This poster gets it. Not many citizens let alone coppers know about the CFD scam with their water rescue. They absolutely do not need that helicopter, we could easily put up a fire boss in one of ours if the Emergency was that great.
Don't give me that fire recue divers bs either. CPD could do the same thing and how many saves do they actually make that CPD or CFD water units couldn't make? I mean someone in a boat has to pick them up after they jump out of the chopper, right?
There hasn't been a need for a huge pumper fire boat for 100yrs now. The thing is manned by regular Firemen too, not some water specialists.
Don't forget about the scam they got going for specialized Diver pay. They get around 4k a year for being a certified diver. Out of the over 300 guys getting this pay, probably only four even work near water.
Other than that, the rest of the CFD units seem ok. Majority of the guys I have come across are great. That is if you can get past the plethora of fire hero stickers that adorn their vehicles (Sorry CFD, I had to say it!)

Many city and town budgets have been decimated due to drastically reduced tax revenues because of the pandemic.
