Must Be Nice

  • Nurses at the University of Illinois Hospital kicked off a seven-day strike Saturday morning in their bid for a new contract that includes limits on the number of patients under each nurse’s care and better personal protection equipment.

    Hundreds of nurses officially walked off the job and into a rainy picket line at 7 a.m. outside the hospital at 1740 W. Taylor St., where administrators contend that they’ve offered “fair and generous” terms to about 800 members represented by the Illinois Nurses Association.

    But medical-surgical nurse Josephine Daylo said more needs to be done to provide proper safety gear — a fight she says is personal for her.

    Earlier in the pandemic, Daylo came down with a nasty cough that turned into a full-blown case of COVID-19, adding her to a list of about 270 of her colleagues who have contracted the deadly virus. And she says she caught it in part because she wasn’t provided with the proper PPE.
Gee:
  • they want limited patients because too many might lead to bad mistakes; Groot is working Officers unlimited hours, which might very well end in mistakes;
  • they want better PPE; CPD has given us....a single mask we had to sign for;
  • they have a list of 270 nurses who got sick with COVID; anyone have Brownies' latest numbers? Have we hit a thousand yet?
  • five days without a Contract? CPD at ONE THOUSAND ONE HUNDRED AND FORTY days
We'll bet they get a Contract before we do.

Well, at the low end estimate, medical mistakes kill about 250,000 per year according to Johns Hopkins. Since medical professionals are roughly 250 times more likely to kill me than the police, give the damn nurses their contract before I have to go to the hospital fer cripes sake!

Given what members of the Chicago Police Department have been put through I am really getting sick and tired of hearing teachers,nurses,and others whine,cry,and immediately go out on strike when there contracts are expired for over 5 minutes.Walk a mile in our shoes people.No proper equipment,cancelled days off without notice,extended tours of duty,hundreds of Officers sick,infected,and injured,no potential for advancement,a City that does not fulfill pension obligations,a City that strips away promised medical coverage from senior citizens who have dedicated their lives to this City,and it goes on and on.So excuse us if we are not playing violins for anyone.

When you walk into a hospital setting you don’t get in without a mask. The personnel are gloved, masked, gowned and may even be wearing plastic shields. So everybody is ready and protected. Sinks, sanitizers, disinfectants are readily available. Patients who come in are screened and you know what you dealing with. Some patients may want to fight but security will be called.

Contrast that with the police who are not ready and suited up. No sinks in the squad cars! You never know who you are dealing with. Some people may even want to fight you, imagine that. I am for both groups getting what they need.

But, I saw their demonstration on the news and it appeared to have the flavor of some of our ongoing “protests” across the country. I sure hope they don’t fall into that well!

Her cough turned into covid? I assume it already was covid causing the cough. I'm no doctor, but I think that's how it works. Coughs generally have underlying causes, like allergies, a cold or flu, etc. Maybe they should've asked the nurses about this while working on this great story. I've had a cough for a few days. I hope it doesn't turn into lung cancer or TB. Can any of these "journalists" actually think or write? It seems like the writing and researching and making sense should be part of the job. Fucking shapeshifter viruses out there dressing up like coughs and then turning into covid.

UIC hospital is poorly managed, nursing care is poor due to the lazy and incompetent staff that are way over paid
When I worjpked there (for many moons) it was so dirty and trying to get the people to do anything was almost impossible.

Of course they will get a contract befor the CPD because they can strike. You have absolutely zero leverage and a very week union. A unified job action is your only recourse however this is the CPD and FOP we are talking about where "unified" is a foreign concept. One for none all for me, CPD motto.

The same goes for cops, tbh. A lot of cops think their profession is better than others and they want preferential treatment for being a cop. You can just make a general statement like that because I know a lot of teachers and nurses that don’t act this way.

I don't want to hear anymore of this "All healthcare workers are heroes" crap.
Hell, if you legally can strike, you aren't all that essential.
Cops can't strike, fire can't strike in most places. If railroad workers try to strike there will be a Federal injunction ordering them back to work.

Teachers and nurses walk off the job all the time and it seems no one dies.

Struck by some creative media coverage of the nurses strike. Noticed that while organizers were preparing signs for picketers there were two piles they were working from. One was INA, which is the Illinois Nurses Association which represents the strikers, and the other pile was. Anyone, anyone, well I'll bet a few of you guessed it. Black Lifes Matter. My first thought was, what the hell does BLM have to do with nurses striking at UIC hospitals?
Well, apparently someone in charge down there must have thought the same thing because for the rest of the day those signs were not seen anywhere in the news coverage. Either some of the strikers refused to carry them, which I doubt, or somebody with some brains decided now is not the time to play other people's games.

Hero complex. We gave it to them during 9/11 & it just keeps coming. I’m grateful for good nurses, they are out there. My neighbor is retired. She worked in NYC during 9/11. She absolutely has no desire to defund the police nor make blanket assumptions about all police. Yet, in the last few years, these nurses have an overblown ego & it needs checking. I’ve seen plenty of hateful, mean, lazy nurses. My mom was a nurse in psychiatric homes. She was fired for calling out patient care or lack thereof from fellow nurses. I worked in nursing homes and once was told by a nurse to not give a patient’s family member information on how to contact the physical therapy people (because the woman’s aunt wasn’t receiving it). Don’t fool yourself, all nurses are not angels.

CPS lasted 11 days before a settlement. The nurses at one hospital want limited patient load, much like CPS StayAtHome teachers demands got them smaller StayAtHome classrooms for two hour StayAtHome work days.
What else they want...hazards pay too? Too many patients go unattended because of shift change and have to wait for handover. Cranks show up late and disgruntled because last shift didn’t make their dutiful rounds.

Nothing against our suburban brothers and sisters but you ever hear the contracts they get? Some of these villages top out near or at $100k in 5 years!!! What’s their schedule like? Usually 12 hour days spent driving around the same 2 mile radius, hanging out at a Starbucks or in their stations and eating for free at nice restaurants and then getting their rdos. What do we get??? No contract no raise for 3 years, 12 hour days, no days off and a mayor and city council full of assholes that hate us and want to take away our pensions.

Before I was a LEO, I was a nurse, yeah I know. So I can tell you this. I did not read the article because I am not paying to read something no more worthy than asswipe paper ,But the walk off was planned and they had back up nurses to take care of the patients. Once a nurse comes to work and begins a shift, after report, if they leave without turning the responsibility for those patients over to another qualified person, then they are guilty of patient abandonment and will lose their job, license, and if something happens get their ass sued off and the hospital will not cover them.
