Eye Protection?
Anyone know where our laser protection is at?
Lasers were used in Evanston at the Northwestern protests and have been used on the west coast for months now.
Since we've already got conflicting info from two different "leaders" regarding what isn't and isn't Great Bodily Harm to our eyes (paint balls), is it safe to assume there's nothing in place to (A) protect us and (B) no direction regarding how to respond?
A blinded cop with a pistol, rifle, behind the wheel of a squad, or even at the controls of a helicopter - you can tell no one at the supervisory level or political leadership has even considered this.

A certain Central Control Group Commander let us know in roll call that the city and department will not back us if we are shot/shot at with a paintball gun and use deadly force. Sounds like they are being told that it is not deadly force and therefore we cannot meet it with deadly force. Despite the department releasing a video about the attacks being on the rise and multiple people suffering injuries to their eyes that are so damaging it includes people not just loosing their vision but their physical eye. So sounds like going fetal might not just be in relation to proactive, but how we need to curl up on the street as we get pelted with paintballs.
He was visibly uncomfortable and put off when he told us this.

That Commander is absolutely correct. If you know someone is shooting paintballs at you (as opposed to perceiving the paintball gun to be a real gun) and you unload on them this state’s attorney will have you charged so fast we won’t even need to arrange a duty judge for you. Ask any detective. I did see the press conference from Cato about CPD treating paintball guns as real guns going forward. The department needs to address this before another member goes to prison for what they thought was a justifiable use of force.

We had to glue the seal around the helmet and use pliers to attach them. Green & blue lasers are the worst. Green most common. You need to block 532-534nm (wavelength)
Higher O.D. (optical density) at that wavelength the better. O.D. 7 is ideal, BUT and O.D. 3 or 4 helps. It's a logarithmic relationship so a OD4 blocks 10x more than an OD3, but that OD3 reduces the beam strength by 1000x. Enough to be the difference between a temporary and permanent problem (depending on strength of laser and distance).
In a sane world, blinding someone with a laser should elicit an immediate response with any available tools.
Anyone working with a laser operator to conceal them (i.e. black bloc) should be treated the same.
No jury in the world is going to convict someone defending themselves from being blinded or burned with a Molotov. One would hope, anyway.

This happened at my polling place too in the 19th ward. they where bleeding through to the other side.
These guys have a patented dye in their lenses that block the green wavelengths, and near infrared (virtually invisible) that can really burn your eyes.
They have discounts for First Responders. Whether CPD authorizes it or not - fuck them. I thought the same thing. I did the front page of my ballot and when I noticed bleed thru to the other side, was told it did t affect my ballot. I went thru my bag and got out my own pen.

Greetings from sunny Texas! When the assholes started the rioting a couple of months ago, the governor IMMEDIATELY passed legislation to protect PO's. Anyone convicted of injuring a PO during one of these "mostly peaceful" demonstrations will get more jail time! NOT IN CHICAGO. NOT IN ILLINOIS.
Just thinking out loud here but would mirrored sunglasses defeat lasers? I might have to root around and dig out my old mirrored "aviators".

Just curious, did your polling station use black sharpie markers to fill out ballot? They should have not been used and I contacted the State and the Patch to verify it. They did this at Northwestern School in Evergreen Park. This is voting interference.

I thought the same thing. I did the front page of my ballot and when I noticed bleed thru to the other side, was told it did t affect my ballot. I went thru my bag and got out my own pen.
I had the same experience with the black sharpie. They told me the State of Illinois sent thick black sharpie markets instead of fine tip markets by accident.
Oh, ok so what your saying it was not by "accident" but rather by "design."

It may not be lethal force, but obviously being blinded or having your eyesight damaged is great bodily harm.

Remember gentlemen, you won't know if it's a laser pointer or a laser gunsight till it's too late.....
Around 3000 new ballistic riot helmets were issued after the riots to individuals who were in units and on tact teams that would be dispatched to riots first. These new helmets had laser strips applied along the eye site part of the face shield. Unfortunately some of the not so bright officers felt the need to try and remove the strip for whatever reason. The strip is designed to reflect the laser away from the eyes.
