No More CompStat?

We just noticed, but it seems that CompStat went away. Brownie didn't care for the way the Deputy in charge tried to make himself look impotent by belittling every other exempt. When he left, CompStat died as a citywide endeavor. There are still some Area-wide CompStat Junior meetings, but as a whole, it's gone.

Anyone know why the dozens (if not tens-of-dozens) of bean-counters weren't immediately returned to the streets to alleviate the now-constant shortages of manpower? Every District we worked had at least three people who did nothing but run reports and count tickets and HQ had at least a watch worth of people running numbers.

It might even ease the parking crunch at Fort Fellatio to send forty of fifty people back to the Districts

Area compstats still require the same number crunch and as far as area 4 goes the same scrutinity and belittling.

Ya never know, might be gone because of lawsuits in the works. ACLU was always sniffing around. R.I.P. Compstat.
Probably for the best. There is no room for the numbers game in a beautiful, liberal paradise like Chicago.

Finally. What a waste of time, money and resources. How it lasted this long is amazing. That someone thought calling up your department leaders then berating them in front of all their peers was a good idea is mind blowing. This should be buried forever and never resurrected. Prob the most destructive thing that happened to the cpd because it turned every cmdr into a scared shitless school girl every time compstat rolled around and then they demanded numbers from their troops just so they wouldn’t look bad at compstat. This turned into stops just for numbers, pushing the envelope on arrests to make the cmdr look good. Terrible terrible idea and horrible way to police. Exactly what’s wrong with policing these days and why people are rioting and hating the police.

At some point policing turned from a profession of helping people, to a profession of numbers. All they look for are numbers. Arrests, isr’s, movers, blue cards, anovs, parkers. Constantly analyzing your numbers and “what’s you’re bringing in.” Why isn’t it ok to just go out there and answer your jobs and in between ride around and keep a presence and look around for bad things happening and just talk with people? Why do we constantly have to be harassing the public and stopping them and ticketing them and bringing in numbers. That’s not what this job should be about. Compstat took it to a whole other level.

These are challenging times.
Compstat run its course and perhaps algorithms can no longer be overridden with positive results. That’s usually the order in which costly bad ideas fade away. Could also be a budget cut effort too, Compstat was merely a mayoral talking point that hid rising crime facts.

By the way, Hushed Brown doesn’t or hasn’t been on the podium much either. He was stymied by Larri and didn’t deliver a quarterly Crime Is Down - We’re Making Great Progress But Have a Lot of Work To Do™️ media press conference in October.

Mismanaged HQ HouseMouse Contingent will go on to the next big great idea in the 21st Century playbook, compiling stats related to reforms.

I am telling my age. When I was a Police Cadet in a district my main job was to count the tickets from all three watches and record them on a tally sheet and send them to traffic court. I would then record the tickets on another tally sheet and enter on which officer wrote the ticket. I would count the parking tickets and record them on another sheet and send them to traffic section. I would also count the curfews and school absentees, enter them on a tally sheet and send them to juvenile headquarters When I was all done I would go home with time to spare. The way it is today I was way under paid.

Some of these positions require some brains and it's non stop work with very little down time! And guess what the work need to get done and someone needs to do it and most people don't want to do it! and some of these bean counters are working their asses off during the mass of overtime coming in and making sure your shit is correct and your getting paid your overtime appropriately and on time! So, GTFOH !

To Mr Retired NYPD, I think you are wrong.
You can put “cops on the dots” without berating the command staff.
In fact, it was done for generations.

The sole purpose of Compstat was to increase activity through fear, don’t give me that nonsense about “cops on the dots.”
That’s EXACTLY what the DOC meetings did. Compstat just turned up the embarrassment and anxiety.
Hell, CPIC puts cops on the dots too. How many levels of redundancy do you need?

We would’ve appreciated it if you’d have kept your failed program out East, along with McCarthy.

Btw- our pizza and hog dogs are better too!

I agree also, the numbers game has been around for my entire 25 years on the job, but it got insane during the IP Gary McCarthy reign. He is the reason we are in a consent degree, but we can also blame Rahm and Barry. They helped with the demise of the CPD.

Your point is well taken. However here in Murder City, it has been weaponized to a fine art. The political hacks and staff Mutts use the tool to pit Field Bosses against one another. They are shamed into making bad choices to feed the "beast" and look good. They brow beat the front line officers into tough situations and no backing when things go south. Morale within the Department is nil. This is 1950's policing strategies in the 21st century.

Our current modern police strategy is using the police to clean up the streets, collect garbage and do other mundane tasks that the community should be doing. I think that's called community responsibility and currently that too, is out dated in Murder City. Wondering out loud here, if this brilliant strategy has anything to do with the almost 700 murders and nearly 3700 shootings and maiming that routinely occurs here. Just sayin....

Keep the faith brother and stay in touch. Watching the mobs rule the streets of NYC is difficult to watch. Seeing a great city like MYC driven into ruination, as ours is, is most troubling. We are with NYPD in fidelity and comradery and we are all part of the Thin Blue Line. Enjoy retirement, you earned it.

Keep believing your own bs my friend, you were hired to be the police not an armed secretary. So stop your crying and continue counting the beans. Most of the bean counters have never been the police and have never made a felony arrest. There is no justification for some one with less then 20 years on the job to be inside unless it is a serious IOD.
