Mayor Lori Lightfoot on Tuesday condemned as “aldermanic prerogative at its worst” the decision by downtown aldermen to block plans to raise commercial property taxes along North Michigan Avenue to bankroll security improvements after two rounds of looting.
Lightfoot said commercial properties fronting the Magnificent Mile are “suffering and hurting” after a dramatic dropoff in sales and foot traffic and were willing to tax themselves to shore up their defenses and lure back shoppers.
Businesses asking for "more taxes"? We think Groot is misinterpreting the tenor of conversation going on between businesses, aldercreatures and her office.
Hopkins countered that Lightfoot’s efforts to “achieve dictatorial rule of Chicago have been stymied, not because of aldermanic prerogative, but because the legislative branch is a co-equal branch of government.”
“That’s a lesson she needs to learn and needs to learn quickly,” Hopkins said.
Reilly renewed his complaint about the “truncated, hurry-up-and-approve-it” process used to create the taxing district and about plans to spend a “significant portion” of the money generated by the three-year tax hike on “salary, contracts, personnel and other operating expenses.”
“This proposal was unveiled just four months ago [and] was developed without any input from the local aldermen. A number of key procedural checkpoints [to gauge support] were waived. And roughly a third of the impacted property owners still do not support the application,” Reilly wrote in an email to the Sun-Times.
One-third opposition is a significant number of businesses who have an actual stake in the TIF being created. The Tribune found that Michigan Avenue has already lost one-third of the businesses. If one-third of the remaining businesses decide that this is the last straw and they shut for good if implemented, the aldercreatures are looking at a 50% reduction in viable businesses in a single year.
Sounds like aldercreatures are doing their jobs, instead of rolling over. For once.

So here’s what happens after the merchants leave and the stores become vacant. The building owners appeal their property taxes seeking a reduction from the county assessor citing a vacancy factor. The taxes are reduced resulting in the county not getting its full share of the pie and then the powers that be look for an increase in taxes from those commercial building owners that still have tenants trying to stick it out. But then those building owners pass the increase on to the remaining tenants who eventually can’t afford to stay, so now they leave and the cycle starts again. This city, county and state is so fucked.

A few months ago an article appeared which said the city was reluctant to have the Corporation Counsel's office pursue criminal charges against many of the demonstrators that tore up the downtown area over the summer. So now, the Mayor, after doing NOTHING to alleviate the losses downtown businesses incurred because of rioting and looting, wants to charge them for security. And that security comes at a cost to Chicagoans who forego their police protection at the district level. As posted here, many districts are running with less than minimal staffing and supervision. And the carjackings, shootings and homicides are at record levels and the pygmy and the blimp do nothing but say Fuck you to the president and then hope for federal bailout money for their incompetence.
Not to worry about lost downtown revenues, because Larry says water, heat and shelter are entitlements so we won't have to pay. Surprisingly, the number of multi unit dwellings, owned by landlords who can't collect rent or evict the squatters, haven't been torched.

Thinking outside the box - instead of using current tax dollars to subsidize the breeding and existence of the looters/shoplifters/robbers/carjackers/assaulters, why not use it to protect against them? The interviewee said that "extra security" in the downtown area is one of the things that the additional taxes would provide.
They had some ridiculous conversation about disorder in the area, refusing to accurately describe the problem: black youths from the south and west sides being violent and disrespectful, while the city government, the liberal press, the prosecutors, the judges, and the sheriff all do nothing to support any enforcement strategy.
Retailers know this. They can't pay huge rents and substantial wages just to have some groups of thugs enter their businesses, steal their inventory, and batter their employees and their patrons, while the city turns their collective heads. Unlike government, private business needs to make a profit, or they won't be in business. This simple concept is completely lost on our current leadership.
It's easier for these businesses to just pack up and leave then be the first to speak the truth, and tarnish their national brand, a brand that they have built on for decades. I don't blame them. Tourists and visitors can only snap off so many pictures of the skyline and the lakefront when they come to Chicago, they also need stores to shop at, restaurants to go to, attractions to visit. If you are close to retiring be careful the order from Groot is to suspend those on their way out as a “parting gift.” It’s been budgeted in and they have numbers to meet. Everything now is at least 1-3 Days and with a retirees held captive the hope is they all just take it.

Wrong. Her re-election isn’t that easy and it’s far different than the states attorney election. Fox ran against a republican. Lightfoot will run against 10-14 other terrible democrat candidates. Lightfoot has to make it to the top 2. Right now she is hated like no other mayor in Chicago’s history. Her lying dictator hypocrite abrasive personality coupled with her destruction of downtown, increase in violent crime and defunding and demoralizing the police is causing public outrage. Aldermen are starting to turn on her too. They know how people feel about her. Unfortunately she had 2.5 years left to destroy Chicago.

in 2004 when the economy started on the downswing the city had a huge buyout. like now, many more left than expected. daley fucked us on the way out the door by not paying any of the retirees back pay that everyone else got. said the city couldnt afford it as they handed out grants and contracts like the end of the world. i lost 4500.00 in back pay in 2004. he also paid everyone accumulated vacation days and personal days at a lower rate of pay, the title you started in, such as a sarge getting patrolmans pay for v time. the latter has been in court with krislov for 16 years, the city probably spent more on lawyers than the 3.00 an hour we were shorted. the backpay was signed off on by the unions so its just gone. dont discount out of hand that the notorious groot wouldnt try to dick you out of a few bucks on the way out the door. how long and how hard would you fight over a couple days if it held up your retirement in this felonious atmosphere. beware the groot. p.s. ten years later after tripling our medical cost the city cancelled our retiree insurance. you are nothing but a liability to these people, they hate you, dont drop the soap around the groot thing.

If I was a store front operator I would be asking for a refund on the services not rendered and to get the officers I did not receive from the taxes I already paid.
I'm NOT LEO but I've read this blog for years and maybe 2 comments in all that time but if Groot is pissing and moaning about more money to fix the businesses her "community" destroyed, have her sue her "community"! blm and antifa both have HUGE bank accounts, go get some!
