Abandonment of employment is a good starting point:
Most of the Chicago Public Schools teachers and staffers who are scheduled to return to classrooms next week for the first time in nine months have tacitly agreed to do so — but almost a third of them requested to work from home or take a leave of absence.
The district ended up rejecting most of those requests, according to CPS data released Tuesday on the 7,002 pre-kindergarten and special education cluster program employees who were told to return to work Jan. 4 following the unprecedented coronavirus pandemic closure.
Two-thirds of those employees — 4,684 of them — didn’t ask for leave or accommodations.
Another 2,010 employees applied to stay home or take leave. The district granted 861 of those requests and rejected 1,149 others, or about 16% of all returning workers. An additional 308 requests are pending, according to CPS.
For all those that don't show up - post 1,149 job openings and they'll be 2,000 applicants the next day.
All non-tenured and all at the low end of the pay scale.

It’s unbelievable how much power these teachers have managed to acquire. They literally are at the point where they think they can do whatever they want. Normally I’m a union supporter, but this CTU thing has grown way too far out of control.

Even without a pandemic, they have all the power because they strike every year and always get their way. Groot will never do anything except give in to their demands. If the ones who "agreed" to return to work don't show up, there will be no consequences. A good portion of the students probably won't bother showing up either. They all like to pretend it's about the children, but it's only about money. Our entire public education system is a joke. It's broken and can't be fixed. And it shouldn't be fixed. Those tax dollars could be used in better ways. If people want to have children, and want those children to go to school, they should have to pay for that schooling. If they don't want to pay, they shouldn't have children. But children need an education, right? That's why parents should be fined if their children don't attend school. If that seems unfair, then don't have children. We need to stop the handouts and rewards for having children you can't afford and refuse to raise properly.

Education must shift to a “real world” approach, which would be “JOB TRAINING”. Other successful countries make sure in their education systems that almost everyone is trained and can obtain a JOB upon completion of their basic education.

Impose a Mandatory retirement for teachers. If they’re claiming the job is too dangerous, hazardous or just won’t take any risk...forced retirement could be the answer. Got Jobs? If we presume the teachers are teaching the subject and not political indoctrination.then that means these kids are getting almost one one instruction in an environment not filled with violence and drama of being in the classroom. Sounds like we have willing teachers matched with students who are dedicated to learning maybe we should have the rest of students teachers return to the classroom and not these folks continue just an education.

All a person needs to teach grade school and most high school courses is a bachelor's degree. Studies at Duke University showed that a higher degree or certifications are meaningless, but are used by the teacher's unions to circle the wagons and demand more money. I taught at Chicago State University for 10 years and I got a load of what passes for teacher education and the quality of students in that program. It was not pleasant
So you guys understand, the probable reason for the sizable number of teachers that requested the accommodation was due to the fact that this request is the ONLY official approach available to get the form to request that ones kids get four days of on-site schooling. Any teacher going back to work with kids in the CPS system would need to find some kind of arrangement for childcare for the two days their kids stay home on the hybrid plan.
The geniuses at CPS decided to tie that request to the bigger work from home/leave of absence request. None of this was communicated to the teachers or the principals either. Most teachers are well aware they won’t get wfh and few people can afford leave (you don’t get paid).
Some schools will probably set a four day onsite school week anyway because of the low percentage of parents who responded that they intend to put their kids on site at all.
IF teachers do go back why dont all the ALderman go back to work at CITY hall?

Put out a list of their salaries like you do for police and fire personnel. It’s a shame that this has not come to light yet. Put cameras in the classrooms, SHOCK ! Maybe having the teachers wear cameras when they come back will resolve some of the BS they have been doing all these years.
