Training Schedules
Anyone know why downtown won't let the Districts handle scheduling for all this training?
- Dear SCC,
Any way you can raise the issue about training scheduling?
I work days. Twice already this year, I've been sent to training on afternoons. Funnily enough, another guy on third watch has been sent to training on days!
To top it all off, the day watch ended up short a second car because of no manpower.
We know everyone is feeling the imaginary heat from the Consent Decree people about getting all the training in. Downtown is always scheduling people on their days off or when they're on furlo, meaning the District has to scramble to find a warm body to send out. The switching shifts thing is just them showing they don't really give a shit about you, your family or your off-time.
If the Consent Decree people actually cared about training, they'd approve the proposed training schedules in the Fall so we could train all winter and early spring before the bleeding days of summer approached. As it is, they don't approve anything until March/April, then the Department has to try to cram 12 months of training opportunities into eight months. And god help you if you're on midnights.

You want the districts to handle the scheduling???
A dozen HQ mice just shit all over themselves in fear of being reassigned to Districk patrol.
🤣🤣🤣
Last year the Dept sent me to the majority of the trainings on days with a 0700 start at South Shore. I’m on 3rd watch so that my wife can go to her job in the morning and then I drop the kids off at school at 0800. The Dept could have gave 2 craps when I brought that point up and told them of the strain it was causing my family. I think on one of them I actually had to hold my kids out of school so that my Mother in Law (who doesn’t drive) could take of them while I spent 8+ hours exploring my wellness. If they truly cared about my wellness they would just leave me alone.

Well, Cupcake, perhaps it’d serve you well to familiarize yourself with your CBA.

Section 20.7 — Change of Schedule
Maybe you weren’t paying attention when they told you this job wasn’t your typical Monday through Friday, 9 to 5’er.
When I came on, we didn’t get paid to go to court and any hours we had accrued on the books were wiped clean every year. But we didn’t cry about it because we knew it was a condition of our employment. We knew what we signed up for. We made it work.
So… put on your big girl panties, adjust your schedule, get a babysitter, reschedule your errands and appointments and report to the training for which you’ve been scheduled.
You represent much of what’s wrong with todays “Chicagos Finest”.

Remember when we had mandatory 40-hour TARA training in the late 2000s…and the department wisely scheduled you for 1 full week of training in the winter or fall to get it over with? Pepperidge Farm remembers…
the department could care less about your sleep or health and well being. I work midinghts from 2200 to 0830 hrs, and was scheduled for training at 1400 hrs the ame day. So I had 5.5 hrs to drive home, get a few hours of sleep and then drive to the new academy. You do the math, I had 3 hrs of sleep in between shifts.
I emailed the officer(initaial C.H.) at the bottom of the notification in case there were any questions regarding the trainng. I questioned the 5.5 hours in between shifts and lack of rest that I would have prior to training. The mail that Ofc C.H. sent back was another notifiction of training informing me of the time and location.
Just last month I attended Officer Wellness where it was stressed tht proper rest is stronlgly encouraged for officer wellness. BUT NOT FOR TRAINING!
I do not beleive tht the consent decree people are aware of the abuse the training academy is putting on our lives with the lack of rest in between shifts.
This is yet another reson why Officers are retiring early and leaving for other agencies.

put me on the medical. thanks
I took a gamble with my situation in this job and luckily I succeeded and no more showing up to work. I learned how to HAT IT!
ot - from ABC 7 news:
Health Committee Chair Rossana Rodriguez-Sanchez (33rd) opened the hearing with a full minute of silence for "all the people who have been killed or harmed by police in our city during a mental health emergency because we did not have the structures in place to help them."
They don't care about you.
It's already been brought up several times with the FOP and their answer is, "The City can do whatever it wants when it comes to training!). Why is this stuff not brought up during contract negotiations? Days stays on days, third watch on third watch etc...is it that hard to do? But as it's been mentioned the City is always running behind on training and now your even going on weekends. Its ridiculous to be sending 5-7 people a watch on training leaving the district short with beat cars down. Gee, i wonder why we have crime up, back-logs, and long service requests call responses. Ladies and Gents, all you can do is 1 job at a time, make sure you go in, do the report accurately, take a washroom break and proceed to the next job. Fuck these people, you get what you vote for. Don't bust your ass and health because the City purposely leaves us short handed. Yes squad, Im still on this job, I'll let you know when I clear.
Simple. Make it all E-Learning. Then I wouldn’t have to listen to the guy with five years tell me about his police experience.

You’ve got to be kidding me?! I’m not sure what to be more disgusted by…the brazen broad daylight theft or that drunken 3-point U-turn. They do know you can just go online and make your own banners with any design you want for under a $150 right? When this was made public I’m sure both of these former CPD hillbillies were scrambling to rip it down from their garages and dispose of the evidence. [Cue the Benny Hill music] “Grandpaw…where’s your NASCAR banner?” “NASCAR? Bah…they’re woke so I threw it in the garbage. But there’s a banner with the Corona girls on it hanging down at that bar…give me a ride will yah?”
Why can’t there just be a system on clear where we can pick our own training days and times. I work third watch and I would rather do a a training on days on my Monday if I had to. Or like other people said I would rather just do it all in one week, like we did for TARA. Especially if we now have 40 hours, you can pick your week from these available and you’re there all week. Although that makes way too much sense.
Imagine someone on days complaining about scheduling. Complete narcissist. Try being on midnights and being scheduled for training at 1pm. Or having court at 1 pm constantly. Department makes no accommodations for midnight but this slag is complaining about days scheduling. Pathetic.
Pboner is right.
You signed up for this job knowing the schedule had the likelihood to be anything but normal.
Your schedule CAN be adjusted a certain amount of days a year (forget exactly how may without looking at the contract). People in certain units, because of skill sets they possess (Marine, Mounted, K9 & SWAT for example), can have hours adjusted additional days to facilitate training.
I’m not saying to just lay back and let this job rape you, but educate yourself on what’s allowable and what kind of recourse you have when they violate anything protected by our contract. And while a good number of grievances take a long time to wind through the process, going through the motions of submitting them checks some of the bossholes who fuck with the troops whether inadvertently or otherwise. And a paper trail is a good thing to have when it’s lawsuit time.
So learn the rules of the game. And then play the game to your advantage at every opportunity. Just do us all a favor and quit crying about the little shit. Many before you have “been there, done that” without the tears of entitlement and tantrums as a side show.
The trainers should be training on our schedules, not corporate business hours.
No way, I didn't volunteer my genius-self to lecture you on afternoons or midnights. DAYS ONLY!
!!!!!
there's got to be a better way. the way & hours they schedule this training is so stressful for people.
The person above who posted about reading the Collective Bargaining Agreement hit the nail on the head. A few here ask why the Union doesn't do this or that. Read your contract and you will know the answers to most of your questions. You also get extra money every year for "Duty Availability." So quit your complaining. You signed up for this job and it's not 9-5.
Read the contract. Know your rights. Go to Union meetings and ask your questions there.
One of the best things I did was read our CBA. Knowledge is power. There's nothing like referencing the contract when submitting a yellow slip or talking to a supervisor who doesn't know the contract.
Well, Cupcake, perhaps it’d serve you well to familiarize yourself with your CBA.

Listen here old timer, I don’t know if you are still on the job or retired and has no idea what it’s like today, get a babysitter ? Rearrange your schedule? With tier deployments, cancellation of holidays and any other time the department feels like fucking with us, officers need to do that. You would hope training is another thing that officers did not need to rearrange their whole schedule for. God forbid instructors work a midnight shift. If you are on the job, I assume you are days so court and any other event doesn’t fuck with your schedule like working midnights does. I assume you are a do nothing old timer who had all the fun while coming to work back then in 1970-1990 and didn’t need to fear losing their job, going to prison on a simple domestic/criminal trespass like we do now so that was a little added bonus for not getting paid to go to court and all that jazz.

This isn't new. Switching watches for training has been around forever. They have to give you at least a week's notice or pay you time+½ for the hours outside your normal watch. And the number of days is limited annually. Read your contract!

Jeez wiz wonder why the so many of your fellow guys during your time drank themselves to death , blew their own brains out , or got divorced and died pretty quickly. Not to mention all the fucking shit we have to go through now to look like we are unfucking the mess you left us. Thanks Dino Boomer enjoy the free lunch I paid for đź‘Ť!!
They don’t give a shot and that krisova who runs it is the biggest cubs ever. They jam all your trainings in one month and make you switch shifts constant. Once the had me do training at night and another the following morning. When I called to ask to switch she told me have your deputy chief call to reschedule. As if my deputy chief even knows I exist. Keep killing morale CPD 5 years left
Why don't they just assign the training to everyone's training jackets just like they have been doing for years???
I recently retired and took a look at my training jacket and was ASTONISHED and AMAZED at how much training I had been receiving over the years. I instantly felt smarter and deserving of a merit promotion in my near future...Then I came back to reality and remembered that I hadn't had all that training...
In other words,...If the CPD personnel dept was ever audited, there would be another scandal...gee, I hope nobody important ever finds this out!

You sound like a fucking fool! An old timer who spent a career in hiding! Rather than having a blast in retirement, you're on the blog trashing some young officer! Talking about what your 30 year old contract said! Before you trash some new guy, try living life and having a good time being retired! After all, you have what maybe 15 minutes of life remaining! Fucking clown

Cupcake? Do you have Stockholm syndrome guy? Let me guess you were first in line for the jab and wore pressed pants everyday to work. Big ass nerd. These trainings are a joke, this isn’t the same police department as “back in the day” therefore the CITYS perks of treating officers like shit and in this circumstance taking a copper off their regular schedule and throwing them on the opposite start time causing them extra time and money when they could just simply assign trainings to same shift ppl are already on. Butttt then there’s boot lickers like you who wana talk shit and stick up for the company LOL. Get a hobby and don’t act like a tough guy when you’re arguing in favor of the city’s well being. Dbag!!!
Read your contract, Playboy!
Per state law you are required to have 9 hours between shifts. Tell your supervisor to excuse you 9 hours before training if you are still scheduled to work. That’s state law, not the CBA. That being said, I always thought per the CBA they can’t change start times by more than 2 hours.

She reminds people a lot of Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez...only if AOC looked like Mrs. Potato-Head with purple hair and rainbow glasses. {Look at her website if you think I'm kidding.}
How about giving 39 minutes of silence to honor all the Chicago Police officers that have committed suicide in the last several years? (Or doesn't our mental health matter?) Or better yet just let Ms. Rodriguez-Sanchez take 24 hours of silence and give her "partner" and cats a much-needed break.

Training isn’t considered a “shift” (and it’s “tour”, kid).
And you kids ain’t gonna tell your supervisors shit, cuz 99% of you are cowards. You’ll talk a big game with the fellas but keep your yap shut when the sergeant or Lieutenant asks “anyone got an issue with this” as crickets chirp away.
And please quit citing parts of the CBA that are completely irrelevant to the weak-assed point you’re trying to make. It makes you look complete stupid.
The old timers have it down. They made it this far because they ain’t stupid. Respect your elders, child. And pay attention to the wisdom they share here. It may just save your stupid ass some day.
Lol. Quite a few STUPIDVISORS and of course all under the umbrella of CPD. But After 20+ years I turned the tables on CPD and facked then ROYALLY! I learned how to hate the job not the police, the stupid job. I'm collecting 75% plus free medical in early retirement.
“Jeez wiz wonder why the so many of your fellow guys during your time drank themselves to death , blew their own brains out , or got divorced and died pretty quickly. “
You must be fuckin blind. Or stupid. Or likely a bit of both.
If you think these phenomena are exclusive to a specific generation of coppers, you’re truly beyond help. It’s painfully apparent that you have just north of zero time on the job. You’d be well served to just keep your mouth shut and observe/listen to the adults on the job. Guys like you are confirmation that the department lowered the shit out of the hiring standards. So glad I’m just about done with this shitshow.

To make life easier all training should be scheduled the two weeks before or after an officer’s furlough. Done in one fell swoop.
This would help with planning ones life - personal and work.
Just a suggestion. ;)

Lemart was probably the best training I went for. The rest was total waste of time.
And don't forget to take advantage of stress management training every year. You have to sign up for it. It's 3 days of 2nd watch down at some obscure office building or hospital boardroom. I went every year while I was OTJ. My supervisor tried to talk me out of it a few times, but they can't stop you. It's really laid back with 1 hour long lunches. When I started going, I hooked up with an old timer who took me out for some drinks in a local pub. He said "Kid, this is how you relieve stress. He then told me some great stories over those beers. We didn't get drunk by any means, and looked forward to every year after...

Actually, I think it’s guys like you that represent much of what’s wrong with today's officers. When you came on, wives stayed home and raised the kids while guys like you went to work, the bar, and ran around with sidepieces. Today the majority of homes have two working adults in them. As for our Collective Bargaining Agreement, we have greedy, arrogant, incompetent dinosaurs like you running it.
If you didn’t speak up about not getting paid for court, then how did it become something that was changed? That’s how change works; you see something that’s not working and move to fix it. It’s great that you didn’t think your time was worth being paid for it; however many of us know our worth. The generation people like you raised don’t want to be as shitty of parents as you were. We actually want to spend time with our families when we’re not working and provide them with a stable environment. You should be happy that people are fighting to do better for your grandkids than you did for them.

What real police work? He was shot by one of his own informants and swept into the academy. Made merit Sgt & Lt, pretty much stayed in academy for both. Went to patrol but right into caps. Never a bad spot or working police on this department. All three choices for top spot are bad news.

Stereotype much? Your response was emotionally charged nonsense and you painted a whole group with a broad brush. Everything you THINK you know, and tried to describe about generations of police officers past? Guess what, asshole? EVERY generation has its drunks, medical abusers, adulterers, and heavy handed cops. Every generation had trials and tribulations unique to their time on the job. The strong persevered and the weak cried about it and usually did nothing proactive to try to change their lot.
Pretty obvious where you stand. Or should I say it’s obvious where you lay on your back and take it?
CPD Leadership is ship a fools. When Lefty Johnson selects the next Superintendent, we will then have the Captain for CPDs ship of fools.
What gets me is that all of this Consent Degree training can be done online through E-Learning. There’s really no reason for you to be there in person sitting in a classroom. It’s all theory-based slide presentations that is not tailored specifically to one department. You log onto a tablet and take the pre-test and post-test electronically anyway. Some of the out-of-town instructors seem to be police-haters as well. It is all very much like standard public school indoctrination…uh I mean “education”.

dumbass, we are still operating under a contract from 2017, long before the consent decree and long before our days off being canceled the way the have been over the reign of Eric Carter. I Consistently attend union meeting but we can not do anything until the contract is changed. I'm not blaming the FOP; its the fault of the city for dragging their feet with this contract. I'm sure these issue were not even addressed with this contract either because it wasn't an issue in the past. You sound like that douche bag who thinks he knows everything.. Hey dummy, the 2017 contract is still in effect til the rest of the one currently being negotiated is finished. The amount of days you can have your schedule changed for training is clearly spelled out in there. Original poster had it rite. You’re a coward.
