One-Third?

We see a tremendous opportunity for savings tens, maybe hundreds of millions of dollars:

  • Chicago Public Schools has a school utilization problem. Over 34% are less than half full, 57% are underutilized, and 5% are overcrowded. Just 35% are at ideal capacity. The Chicago Teachers Union is preventing solutions.

About 322,000 Chicago Public Schools students are set to return Aug. 21, with more than 1 in 3 students entering buildings less than half full.

Nearly empty school buildings eat resources that should go towards students’ educations. Those educations are lacking when just 14% of CPS 3rd through 8th grade students from low-income families met proficiency standards in reading and 9% in math. School capacity appears to matter, with the most underused schools showing abysmal scores compared to the most overcrowded schools all recording higher scores.

    Blame the Chicago Teachers Union.

Fourteen percent reading at grade level? And nine percent at math? Hell, the savings alone in shutting down/combining underutilized schools would be enough to hold the line on property taxes for a couple years.

What logical human being could possibly stand in the way of saving massive amounts of money, especially considering the abysmal product they're putting out?

The CTU runs this city.
They are not going to consolidate anything.

Were the chicago public school system to be authentically about education as a benefit to the public, all cps school structures would be managed as individual, stand substantially alone enterprises.

This would require all taxpayer funding to be vouchered out to the parents of all school aged children, equally based upon age/grade level of said children.

Thus, all enrollment/attendence in specific schools, of said children, would be chosen by said parents.

Competition always results in better service, and, since education is essentially a service, what more beneficial means other than competition exists?

The current thuggery of both the political buttplugs of cps adminstration and ctu greedy hogs is Orwell's Animal Farm, without the analogy format.

Vanecko School Maintenance Co is why. There's some connected parties involved in maintaining the empty schools. There are lots of jobs as principals, nurses, assistant principals, janitors, building engineers etc that would be lost if more schools closed or consolidated so the unions and politicians are not going to change anything.

Here's a question. CPS says 322K are enrolling. The number of 5-18 yr olds in Chicago is ~500k. Where are the other 150K+ ?

Consolidate the schools. Convert the empty ones to neighborhood casinos and safe dope shooting spaces. Charge heavily for usage, $$$ goes to pensions. Legalize prostitution in selected former schools and convert to bordellos.

CTU aren't socialists, they're bolsheviks. Dumb, lazy and overpaid bolsheviks. And now one of those dumb, lazy, overpaid bolsheviks is running the city.

Definitely need to close and sell some of the schools. We have way too many teachers way too much staff. It’s incredible they keep people bleeding the cities and many of them don’t even live in the city!

You are right, that would be termed racist, as is everything these days. Nothing involving fiscal responsibility and common sense will happen. And of course BJ is a tool of the CTU. Get out if you can get out, it won't be getting any better.

Best thing we could do for the children of Chicago would be to offer school vouchers to every family and allow private schools to teach the children. Allow private schools to offer multiple options for teaching styles, and make sure both public and private schools have the absolute right to discipline and throw out disruptive students.

Religious schools, sex segregated schools, strict discipline, open learning, all school models should be allowed, and all schools should be judged on performance. Are the students learning? Can they pass basic skills tests?

The Democrat Party is a wholly owned subsidiary of the Teachers Unions. The Teacher Unions are radical progressive Marxist organizations that care very little about actually teaching students or even protecting teachers. Make them obsolete.

CPS has serious credibility issues and they're a contradicting themselves.

CPS removed an interim principal at Lindblom HS for several allegations yet offered him to apply for other positions in the district. Wait, what?

"CPS responded with a sprawling, 61-page investigative report on Muhammad produced in March by an attorney in the district’s law department. (They didn’t provide any details on the other principals by our publication deadline, citing ongoing investigations.)

It showed that CPS found “evidence” to support 18 allegations against Muhammad, including:

“Odd hiring practices,” like creating three new positions without disclosing hiring procedures.

Failing to heed concerns that a severely disabled special education student endangered staff, including an incident where the student allegedly disrobed and rubbed their genitals on teachers.

Failing to background check entertainers for a pep rally.

Failing to train staff on how to report safety incidents in CPS’s system.

Allowing “critical inaccuracies” in special education procedures and record-keeping to continue."

Then....

"In the end, CPS temporarily reassigned Muhammad to a regional office, suspended him without pay for five days and gave him two months to “seek new full-time roles within CPS.” He was invited to apply for other positions in the district."

Off topic -- Lawrence's Fish & Shrimp on Canal is now renting out pontoons for people to ride on the river.

What could possibly go wrong?

Time to move out of Chicago, Cook County and Illinois is the best answer for this doomed city, and blue political strongholds!
Even Iowa {Triple AAA Finance, low taxes and as of 2023, NO retirement taxes} and Indiana {Lower Taxes} both Red States, look way better to live in if you have to stay in the Midwest States because of family and can't move South to Tennessee and Florida both Red States.
Something to think about for us retirees!

Closing underutilized schools will require transportation of kids to the surviving schools. When Kamala ("I love yellow school busses!") Harris shows up in town, you'll know they're serious.

CPS teachers and their union are more concerned with pushing their radical, socialist agenda and spreading lies about the police and the “white devil” than they are about teaching the 3 R’s. It should come as no surprise that the average CPS student is unable to read or add and subtract. It’s cool though, they’re teaching the kids about trannys and bull shit stories about Jon Burge and some nonexistent electro shock machine.

Consolidating schools has been tried before. Too much opposition. Parents say they want neighborhood schools. Close to home.

The reality is that the reason schools are underutilized is because of gang boundaries. One school is a people's and one is a folks.

And no, they just can't get along.

I moved to Indianapolis 5 years ago and can't wait to move again. Taxes may be lower in some aspects, but they make it up in other areas. It also depends on which Township and county you live in. Property taxes continuously go up, license
plate renewal is costing me 428.00. It's starting to look like Illinois a whole lot.
I would advise anyone who is looking to retire here to consider carefully.
