UPDATE: Good lord commentators. Let us get this straight - despite the fact that the entire labor movement was predicated on a forty-hour work week, fair pay, health/safety and recently, MENTAL WELL BEING, the City of Chicago threw all that out the window, canceling days off at will IN NON EMERGENCY situations for months on end even all of last winter....and now that we're finally getting our days off back, we're supposed to THANK our abusers? For returning to us what NEVER should have been removed?
Wow. Just wow. Your spouses thank you for coming home too exhausted to beat them? Your kids smile when you can't raise the belt and tan their hides? You dog breathes a sign of relief when you're physically unable to open the jar of peanut butter?
Groot and Rahm eliminated over 2,000 spots from the budget because they couldn't fill them. BJ is currently short 1,900 officers. Retirements are outpacing hiring this year and are on track to do the same for the next three years minimum. If we point out that what Snelling did was a "gimme" win and wonder aloud what's going to happen in 2024, don't tell us to thank him for "granting" us regular days off and move on.
Start being a little more forward thinking. It ain't pessimism to attempt to be prepared for a shitshow.

I remember when Brown and Mcdemott and Cato and Deenihan and all their buddies were going around to the districts asking the supervisors what they thought the department was doing right and wrong, like a town hall with the district supervisors. Every single place told them that they were destroying the department by cancelling days off. They were told how bad this was effecting the mental health of the officers and it was the number 1 problem with the department by a mile. They couldn’t have given two shits about what we were saying. Even tho we told them what the problem was, they refused to accept it and change it. After that I realized how little the command staff thought of the workers and their mental and physical well being. That day is when everything changed for me. I began treating the department the way it was treating us. It got what it deserved. And that McDermott, how can he show his face anywhere? He went along with it all and pushed the cancelled days off down our throats. So many coopers retired or left for other departments for the sole reason of all these cancelled days off and never being able to actually count on your days off. I also believe that some of these suicides have been directly related to all these cancelled days off, because I was almost one of them. It almost destroyed me and my whole life. I almost couldn’t take it anymore. We need time away from this job and we need to be able to plan stuff on our days off without the constant worry that the department will make us work instead.
How many coppers left the job because of what this department was doing with the constant canceled rdo’s? How hard is it to honor days off that we are supposed to have. It’s so simple, do not fuck with our rdo’s. Give us our 2 days away from the madness to reset. Thank you snelling. First move was a gigantic step in the right direction. Let people volunteer that want to work their rdo’s but don’t fuck with the people that don’t. That goes for the summer too. Agree with you, drive around in a warm or cool suv as people are bundled up doing real work outside making less money with much less benefits! No need to hate on someone who VOLUNTEERS to work their free time. All the power to him if he wants to work every day off. The key word is volunteer. It’s when the city FORCES us to work our days off, now that’s when everyone should be up in arms. I have no problem with people working their asses off on or off duty. Maybe he’s putting in the time now and then going to live like a king the rest of his life, while you have to work until you’re 65.

You’re in an entirely different boat than most of us. Constantly working OT takes us away from our kids, which has a huge impact on them. So the little free time I had was spent with them or catching up on house work. So working out was last. Our family has been debt free for well over 20 years. Only a reasonable mortgage payment. I want to choose when I work my days off but Lightfoot and BJ forced me to when I didn’t want to or need the money. This was another factor that forced me into retirement prior to age 55.
I just met a detective from A/4 who told me he's knocking down close to 200 hrs a month in OT, that's a lot of green in ones pocket.
Finally a Superintendent that gets it.
Oh no! How am I going to pay the note on my Jeep Wrangler and my brand new pickup truck? Who’s going to pay for my old school cars? My wife is a stay home mom and she doesn’t work. Some of them actually drive around in those new 150k Ford Raptor R or other 50k+ trucks even before they finish their cycles.
Seems like they don't have to worry about home payments and live free in mommy's basement for the next 84 months.
Retirements always outpace hiring. One doesn't have to apply for the job but once you get it you eventually will have to leave.

Lol then quit? Go find a safer job or do everything you can to land an inside spot? Life too short to be so bitter. You’re the police, even if you hide and duck calls you still run the risk of running into something. I can tell some of you have never worked outside being the police. This job could be much better if we actually stuck together but we don’t. That’s our own fault.
Only our profession would complain about something good.

Wait a gosh darn minute what about my half done tattoo? What about my smoked out windows in my pickup the one I refuse to buy a city sticker for, now I cannot afford it!
That type of crap should always be on a volunteer basis. We have tons of thirsty coppers who will gladly show up for the extra cash instead of enjoying their lives. Plus we get enough cancelled days off bs during the nice weather months foisted upon us anyway.

I love how some think that people who like to work aren’t enjoying their life. These are the same cops who aren’t happy unless they’re off duty getting drunk with a bunch of other drunks. You know the ones you read about in the paper for getting drunk in a Indiana casino.

Most read the first few comments and the last few, so here you go....typical cop thread. As I read some of the comments it's sad that so many copper bitch and moan about everything. Forced canceled days off, coppers bitching. You get your rdo's back cops bitching because they were supposed to have them to begin with/ now that I won't have my rdo's canceled I'm not getting o.t. It reminds me of all the coppers that cry about the fop not doing much for the members yet they never attended a meeting. The worst part about all of this is that cops bitch and moan with 2 yrs on or 25 plus years and will do nothing about it, why? Because at the end of the day we have a career making anywhere from 100k-200k and probably work a quarter as much as others making less than we make. I say count your blessings, everyday you wake up it's a great day! This job is only as hard as YOU make it, so focus on the 7th and 22nd and your family and friends until it's time to retire and you'll be just fine.

First off about the FOP. We pay dues. And who the fuck wants to drive for 40 minutes after work into the city to attend a union meeting where they scold you as "we've already addressed that issue". Which is code for, there's nothing we can do. Maybe they should go to roll calls outside of election season.
Also, yeah being greatful for a decent paying job is fine, but sometimes it's nessisary to vocalize in anger, a collective discontent to the city and the FOP. Otherwise they WILL walk on us. Or dismiss our concerns as, "you have a good paying job, shut up". All the union benefits we have took decades to get. And once the city starts violating the contract, the genie is out if the bottle. Anything goes.
I have no personal beef with J-Cat. The FOP has been there for coppers and their families in distress. But I don't want to hear, that something is a disgrace on a Friday video, and then nothing is done. We agree John, but we want action. What action you ask? Well I'm not the Union president, that's the job you got.

Believe it! That’s why I hope they get rid of the Chief of Patrol. He couldn’t come up with any other strategy. Dump him! The FOP allowed it! Dump them too!
No Daily or Tiered Deployment today. The Willis Tower is still standing, 290 is still backed up. Nothing has changed thus far! I think we’re going to be okay after all.
