Can’t think of a time in the dept history when moral was even close to being as low as when this guy was in charge of patrol. He constantly cancelled days off, or at least was complicit in it. I was at a meeting where he spoke up with David brown saying they had to constantly cancel days off because of manpower. He put us thru hell in patrol for years. The department seemed in total disarray. All kinds of crazy shit orders coming out of his office. Do this, do that. None of it really made sense. We all got the feeling like he was just throwing darts at a strategy dart board hoping something would stick. It never worked. I know it can get worse, but that doesn’t mean he gets a pass. He could’ve done way more for us and didn’t. Never felt he had our backs. Never showed up to support us in any way at all. Sure never spoke up publicly for us.
Hein is an assclown who’s never been the police and has zero leadership skills. He’s perfect to rise to the top while stepping on everyone in his way. He single handedly destroyed the 018th District in his tenure. Every decent Lt and Sgt has left that could , but don’t worry he managed to leave his suckhole lackey Sgt JS to spy and send emails on his behalf , making end runs around the current commander.

I can already imagine a ball licker or 2 who latched onto her coattails in the district prepping to tell everyone how they “earned” the merit bump they will surely get.
I understand the value of “merit” in the promotional process but one bite of the apple is enough.
The fact that someone can get multiple bumps makes it much more likely that the system will be abused than it being applied legitimately. Nothing more than a free handout to the connected, who always swear they earned it.
Get fed at the trough once and say thank you. People taking 2 or 3 bumps on clout is absolutely ridiculous.
And the fact that if you tell me who the boss becomes I can already tell you who will be given a promotion says about all you need to know.
There has got to be something contractually through the FOP that can be done to curtail these “merit” shenanigans.
One of the biggest factors towards the low morale is the rigged promotional system. Increase morale and limit it at one free pass per career, the rank and file will thank you.
The CPD has been mismanaged for a long while. It shows. Total incompetence.

Hahaha, this made me laugh. Like he’s taking the high road by leaving the sinking ship. Guess who has created all those crater size holes in the sinking ship? Him. HE WAS THE ONE RUNNING AND RUINING THE DEPARTMENT. My hope is that he gets put back into patrol and the department cancels every one of his fucking days off so he can feel what it was like having to work the street without ever knowing if your days off will come or if you’ll get them. You have a trip planned, haha, cancelled last minute. Your kid has a championship game you want to go to on your day off, haha cancelled. Maybe you’ll catch the next time your kid graduates high school. This guy didn’t give a fuck about us or our lives. We do not feel sorry for this guy. He was the problem. His policies caused every policeman to tell everyone they know not to come anywhere near this job. I wouldn’t wish this job on my worst enemies, and many of the reasons are because of stuff he did while he was the chief of patrol.

How Hein has managed to weasel his way up to where he currently is should be a playbook for all to study. He’s jumped from 1 political power group to another leaving the former in the dust. He’s an insufferable ego maniac who, if given the chance will single handily ruin Patrol in under a year. He will also be the subject of numerous sexual harassment beefs as well as hostile work environment complaints. How he’s managed to last this long without one is one of life’s greatest mysteries. Anyone from 015 or 018 knows this man drinks too much and makes comments that would offend everyone. He talks down and demeans his supervisors, he threatens Officers daily and if elevated will cost the dept millions of dollars.
However, with all that being said it’s only fitting that he’s filling in as Chief of Patrol, the only reason is because of all the events going on in 001/018, navy pier, riverwalk this weekend. His ego has been elevated so much that he single handily was able to lift the 001st district building and halt the leaning that building has with the shitty construction. Congrats on the title for the weekend JP, your new power group of Talley,Cato, and Whines have elevated you higher than imagined.
Who cares about insurance when your pension is almost 200k. You can afford your own or just jump on your wife's.

Umm, u know that PO’s have been and currently are doing this, right? They’re already reviewing a vast majority of TRR’s, so I don’t see it as a stretch to have them review them all. I’d rather someone who is more trained at it reviewing them and does it on a daily basis do it than my crazy Lt.

Hopefully he will make his mark in inspections as it is now we don't have 2 coppers dressed the same, plus coppers with so many vehicle violations on their private vehicles the clown club continues!
Thank God I switched over to CFD 17 years ago. I sleep 17 hours a day at work, eat like I'm in college, watch t.v., play viedo games, etc.
If the new Supe wants any hope of turning around this sinking department and actually boost morale then he needs to do the right thing and promote Don Jerome to Chief of Patrol or 1st Deputy. Snelling needs to be colorblind when it comes to a competent Command Staff to lead ue.

When you voluntarily surrender an appointed rank, falling to another appointed rank, such as captain, which is an appointed rank that was previously surrendered to be appointed to a higher rank, should not be allowed. At best, a return to lieutenant, sergeant or police officer, whichever was occupied immediately before or attained during the occupation of the appointed rank, is the appropriate move.

Wishful thinking! How will TRED interview the offender and do the required visual observation for alleged injuries? Lt. MK at Area One is no different. Never should have made lieutenant. Was in the 300’s. Skipped patrol and went right back to the D-unit. Was never a detective, completely lost and useless as a clouted RBT. Sgt. He still has no clue as to what he’s doing.

The Central Control Group covers the business districts. There are several units that make up the CCG (001, 018, MAIU, Mass Transit, Central Detention, Traffic, Central Bike Unit, etc.)

One of the officers on the watch wrote a ticket for no city sticker & she wanted me to take care of it.
I said I'd talk to the officer & it was his call to make, not mine.
The officer said he didn't know her & wasn't comfortable in doing so, so I said sorry, no can do.
Needless to say she wasn't too happy!

For those who blame McDermott for everything , I’m going to fill you in on the truth from 35th. McDermott had no say in any decisions related to Patrol, other than promoting his buddies Spellman, O’Connor, and bumping up Melean ( his biggest mistakes btw.)
Carter and Brown walled him off from any decision-making and made all the decisions; they actually were running everyone’s Bureaus, making all decisions, personnel moves, promotions etc, nobody else in the building or otherwise, knew what was going on But them, it was mostly Carter since Brown really didn’t know anyone or anything about this department and was way over his head upon his arrival. Carter was putting his people in every spot in every Bureau, it was so bad in OCD that it was rumored around the building that the then Chief and Dep Chief had enough and left due to his constant meddling and his people going around them and straight to him with everything; it was no different in Patrol.
The irony of it all was that Carter was the 5th choice for 1st deputy, the person they really wanted was Deenihan, but he was smart enough to decline it, along with three others.
We know it was Carter that sabotaged McDermott because prior to that Brown loved him and what he was doing in 008, even mentioning in an open Compstat mtg that he wish he had a twin brother and promoted him to Chief soon after. Carter didn’t like that and walled him off.
McDermott resigned Chief voluntarily and went back to Captain; he saw the writing on the wall and got out in front of it. He and Snelling were not on the same page and he knew he would be moved, The Sox park fiasco with his guy Spellman ( a total cover up for the CPS by the Mayor btw) and Melean blowing off the incident in 018 probably hastened his decision. He was known in the building as one of the smartest and non-merit exempts. His replacement is gonna be a disaster, watch and see.

Tred is already months behind. Add in fact TRR per recently changed and I if dude doesn’t handcuff himself it requires a TRR , that should be an excellent way to handle them.

I got news for you, your days off are still going to be cancelled regularly in 2024 and beyond, regardless of who sits in the Chief of Patrols chair. You know why? Because the department is understaffed in the 9161 rank and when there are multiple events in the Summer taking place that require police presence or holidays, well sweet pee your days off are going to be cancelled every damn time until and unless there is a massive hiring of at least 1500 recruits.
And there is no Chief of Patrol who isn't going to authorize days off cancelled.

100% true, McDermott found out everything from the Daily Wire or Personnel at HQ telling him. He never found out anything first hand. He literally knew nothing and wasn't alone. Exactly what was the "call to make" and how do you "take care of it"? By the officer doctoring the plate number on the ticket (trickbag) or attempting to non-suit a lawfully issued ticket by giving a bogus reason (trickbag)? It would have been a good day if you had done your job as a supervisor and simply told her the ticket was written and that was that. Ben wasn't the only idiot on scene that day.
If McDermott was smart he would of applied to be the Police Chief at Metra. 225k a year to run a department of about 40 people currently. 2nd highest paid chief in the state.
