One-fifth of Illinois adults are functionally illiterate, according to the National Center for Education Statistics. That means they cannot understand the meaning of sentences, locate information on pages or complete simple forms, all of which would affect their abilities to hold many jobs.
In Cook County, 25% of adults are functionally illiterate.
At City Hall, the rate climbs to about 33%
On the fifth floor of Police HQ, it's nearer to 40%.
And what does it cost, compared to years past? Someone did the math:
- Chicago Public Schools (CPS) now spends over $29,000 per student, compared to $17,800 per student in 2020. According to the Illinois State Board of Education, CPS enrollment has decreased by 8.9% since 2020, with the Chicago Sun-Times projecting an additional 2.8% decrease in 2023.
So it costs over $12,000 MORE per pupil than it did in 2020....and there are nearly 9% FEWER kids in school.
Funny, less kids should mean less expenditures. There's got to be some room for cuts, right?

CPD’s promotional requirement thresholds are second only to CPD’s hiring requirement thresholds.
The Oregon Department of Education has removed any requirement for proficiency in reading, writing or math to graduate from high school. This policy will be in effect until at least 2029.
The officials said that to administer a standardized test to prove proficiency would be "a harmful hurdle for historically marginalized students."
So, in Oregon you can be completely illiterate and they will gladly hand you your high school diploma.

How many of those illiterates are CPS graduates is the real question. My guess would be north of 50%.
$17K seems like a bargain for per pupil expenditures at CPS schools. Austin HS per pupil per pupil spending is $24K for a school of 175 kids and a 55% graduation rate while using 8% of their building's space.
The biggest CPS black hole is Douglass HS with 35 students and a $73K per pupil spending that includes 24 employees (1/2 making $100K+) with both a Principal $173K salary) and Assistant Principal.
That wasn't an error, 24 employees for 35 students at $73K per pupil.
Douglass has a utilization capacity for 1116 students and with only 35 students, they're using 3%-4% of their building.
Austin HS is SIX blocks away from Douglass HS. Why doesn't CPS combine both schools and allow Douglass' students to occupy Austin's building? Simply operate Douglass HS inside Austin HS building like CPS did with Rickover (Naval) Academy HS inside Senn HS for several years. That's until CPS bought Luther North HS to house Rickover a handful of years ago.
Why? It's because Douglass has too many connected employees making good money to do nearly nothing all day.
The only reason Austin HS had 175 students is because of an influx of 20-25 Spanish speaking migrant students. Ironically, Austin HS doesn't have any Spanish speaking teachers or staff, just ones that know ghetto speak. So, the migrant students are being taught in Spanglish. They have a substitute teaching Spanish classes without being able to speak Spanish.

The public school administration in Chicago is a bloated and over compensated patronage army. Look at the BGA web site and check salaries and pensions. The top members are all educators. Government pays well
Oddly enough, most of the CTU's CORE supporters don't work as teachers at neighborhood schools. They work at selective enrollment schools or a academies.

I taught part time as an adjunct starting at a suburban city college and then moving onto Chicago State. It was an eye opener for me. The level of knowledge and skills were abysmal from public school graduates. If I held my students to even a low level of competence I would have failed most of them. The worst part is I suspected the administration of changing grades. But, that is why we have DEI and patronage merit promotions.
Years ago, when reports were handwritten, I would peruse through the turn in box for reports before checkoff. I was constantly amazed at how illiterate some police reports were written. I brought that up to a sergeant. Who didn't disagree with me. And that was not all that long ago...
I suspected then that CPS was failing at its core mission...

If you escaped Illinois in search of a better education for your children, unless you pay for private schools, you will be disappointed. The educational ditch is spreading nationwide and DEI, social promotions and low or no standards to graduate is fast approaching the norm everywhere. Educators, at least most of them and the administrators are the product of left wing colleges and it shows. It is the Marxist and racist policy of low expectations for " marginalized" people of color. DEI and quotas and affirmative action is their way of covering up their failures.

So far, in this Red State, the schools are new, and MOST of the teachers don't buy into that DEI bullshit. I caught a couple of them posting some stuff on the classroom windows (a thinly veiled version of that pride flag crap), raised holy hell, and the administrators went and yanked it down the next day.
We gota sit on them. At least in this place, there's more of a chance to keep our eyes on the ball and fight it when it crops up. Illinois? Done. I spent years arguing with governmental and school entities to no avail because Demoncrats run the whole show and pay lip service to complaints.
Taxes are lower, people are friendlier. Hopefully we can keep our new home free of the woke bullshit.
