Another FOP Win

Conehead in full retreat:

  • Mayor Brandon Johnson dodged what might have been an embarrassing defeat by opting Wednesday not to ask his City Council allies to reaffirm their symbolic commitment to police reform and accountability. At issue was an arbitrator’s ruling allowing police officers recommended for firings or suspensions over one year to bypass the Police Board and take their cases to arbitration.

The Council voted 33-16 in December to reject that ruling, and arbitrator Edwin Benn on Jan. 4 decision reaffirmed it. That sent the matter back to the Council for a second vote, but the Police Committee never held a meeting on it.

Johnson wanted the Council to reject that ruling again. His allies filed notice of their intention to seek that vote with the city clerk’s office. The city’s longtime labor negotiator Jim Franczek even told a Circuit Court judge hearing a lawsuit already filed by the Fraternal Order of Police that the second vote would be held at Wednesday’s City Council meeting.

But Johnson had a problem. He needed two-thirds of the Council — 34 members — to vote to immediately consider the matter because it had not been before a committee.

The FOP president made sure that Conehead's next trip to the hospital is right around the corner:

  • “He knew there were defectors out of the first group and he didn’t want to risk it ... so he pulled a parliamentary move and lied to the judge,” Fraternal Order of Police President John Catanzara told the Sun-Times. “He’s a coward,” Catanzara said of Johnson. “You had your attorney tell the judge you’re calling the vote. Call the vote. But he didn’t do it.”

Another court hearing is next week, and “I would hope the judge issues a temporary restraining order on all Police Board cases and a summary judgment right on the spot,” Catanzara said.

The fiery FOP president advised city officials to “get your checkbooks ready.” “We’re gonna sue the s--t out of ’em civilly for damages for not allowing due process for these members since 2019. That’s a lot of officers. That’s a lot of money,” the FOP president said.

Keep the pressure on, because a win here is going to be very important after all of the CRs that will be filed during the DNC in August.

I don't know who really reads this but if any progressive types or if any city lawyer scans these posts, take note. Our government is of checks and balances. The police board fails to be neutral, or fair due to political obligations. Compare this to a bench or jury trial. If you want competant & experienced officers please stop this reform nonsense. Every reform & law passed has only increased crime to where just living is basically impossible, & made life worse for everyone. I'm telling you now, hardcore lifetime Democratic voters are switching to Republican. We know , the machine will try to steal anouther election & proof just come out it was not a fairly tale lie. The American people have zero faith in its government or media. Let's see what complete insanity is on the horizon after a city government cannot even give already established (labor) due process to its employees.

Just out of curiosity, why is he using 2019 as the magic number for a date regarding action?
So anyone being unduly terminated since 2019 might have some sort of recourse, but those terminated before that are just SOL?
A win is a win I guess for sure but was just curious how that became the line in the sand.

I’m no J-Cat fanboy by any stretch of the imagination.
And I’m quite sure he’s on his own particular brand of BS in many different regards.

But I will give credit where credit is due.
All of our FOP presidents have been involved in their fair share of shenanigans over the years.
At least with this guy we’re getting a return of some sort in various ways.

You do know this whole process started with the prior board right? And because courts don’t run efficiently and are slow as fuck the ruling was not issued until after Cantanzara took office. So of course John acts like it all his doing and gives zero credit to the ones who researched and filled this process in the beginning.

It is funny how John champions his multiple trips in front of the police board but not once did he ever make this argument that he deserved an arbitrator instead of the police board to rule on his cases. You want to know why? Cause he had no clue about it.

Facts matter. Just not with John and his lackeys.

Glad to see that anyone who may have a major incident pending right now can breath a little easier as now they can get a fair shake and not have to worry about a police board who fired people just to appease politics for the sake of being progressive. I wonder? What will happen to the Sgt and officers who were fired because of Labuan McDonald shooting who had nothing do do with the “cover up” they tried to push. The Sgt who wasn’t even there and just approved a report that had no real substance to it?? What happens to them? What about guys fired during a shooting that was justified but fired because of a late activation(should be a reprimand or 1 day).

None of the police oversight entities are are fully independent. The CCPSA has their hand in everything. And if you look at some of their social media, or that the District Councils (and their members) they oversee, they are far, far from neutral. The Community Commission for Public Safety and Accountability has a role in selecting and removing the Superintendent, Police Board members, and the head if COPA so if they want to stick around, they have to keep the CCPSA happy. That's why arbitration is needed.

It was arbitration, not the courts chief. The police board was part of the old contract dumb ass, you know the one that Kevin Graham negotiated, the current FOP knew the labor law and wanted it out of the newly approved contract. The city didn’t agree so it went to arbitration and the FOP won. You would think if this was a Kevin Graham initiative he would have said something before you, an anonymous blog commenter said something? Cantazara is like Trump to you people, everything’s he done that is a home run all you turds want to credit the past FOP admins. You know, the ones that try to sell you squad cars that the city is obligated to provide anyways is a win. Great timing for John huh? He keeps hitting home runs and it was all the old jag offs that were in the city pocket like Mike Shields said doing all the leg work. GTFO.

Hey get off your knees ! The right to basically remove the Police Board was won by Bob Bartlett . It was supposed to be put in effect when the contract was completed . The first thing Ratanzara did after kicking Graham out about the bs camera lies was to opt out of arbitration . He opted out ! It didn’t come in because of that . Let’s see there’s twenty one cops in call back bacause the held the line .” Can u imagine taking advice from guys who have been to the Police Board multiple times ? How many degrees does this crew have combined ? Not counting the ones you got in jail ! The hammer is gonna fall and wait til that happens . Money being spent faster than the cops who pays dues make ! Leave any prisoners in the back of the wagon lately ?

Kevin Graham never got a contract from the City of Chicago . That was Dean Angelo ! Amazing how dumb some people are . The City wasn’t going to give us a contract and as result arbitration was filed . John does a great job of spinning his lies , half truths and omissions . Too bad a lot of cops or so called ones can’t figure that out . Fact : He lied about Kevin Grahams entire case . He objected to Aguilar presenting the case and would show most rational people what a shit show it was . Fact : Kathy Spiewak testified Graham did not have access to the camera . It’s amazing this crew all ten of them the lack of work they do for their members and the ability to beat their own drums . Fact : 2,800 ballots were delivered to the Post Office and were not counted . Catanzara sent his secretary to the Post Office in violation of election rules and now states the ballots were destroyed . How much money has been funneled into other people’s pockets during elections ? One day this Union will be shut down and people will have their day in court and it won’t be the Police Board but a federal one ! That day is coming ! This administration is hiding the minutes from their members so that NO ONE knows where their dues are going !
