What's the actual policy now?
- [from the comments] O.T. I attended the new riot training the last 2 days. I Was told my gas mask is expired (this is the 4th one I have been issued, was told may or may not get a new one before August). The helmet I was issued in 1996 is falling apart. I was told our helmets are our now our property, not Department issued, and I have pay out of pocket to fix or buy a new one. Does anyone know what G.O. covers this? The Dept said it was too much money to buy replacement helmets for all the old ones. Good looking out for the CPD Mayor. Where is all that Democrat Convention money being spend on? Not public safety.
If they're switching to a new style helmet (kevlar armored) we're pretty sure that's "first issue" and will be paid for by the city.
If your old D.O.T. helmet - essentially a motorcycle helmet with zero ballistic protection - is in poor condition, we would assume the city has to have replacement parts on hand (i.e. a replacement shield for cracked plastic, etc). Who bears the cost is up for discussion, but this would be a perfect opportunity for a commissary exchange type experiment.
In our case, the internal webbing and foam pads have degraded to the point where they're crumbling after all those summers in and out of trunks or being stored in lockers in poor temperature controlled buildings. Not only that, our face shield has zero protection against laser pointers, which we hear will be in high concentration at this fall's DNC. Fortunately, we won't be in high concentration by convention time, so the taxpayers will be spared the cost of our eye protection.

This is a rather simple issue to work out.
My helmet also suffers the same ailments as SCCs. Additionally, the chin strap is FUBAR (thanks to the Bulls “riot” circa ‘93?) and won’t properly secure helmet to my head. The city/department issued this helmet and never said I was responsible for maintaining or replacing it in the event it was damaged. Therefore they are responsible for maintaining it’s serviceability.
If they refuse to repair or replace, it will be extensively documented and I will refuse to wear it as it’s a hazard/safety issue. Direct order to wear it? Ha!! Nope… I’ll be refusing that unlawful order.
Make it work for you.

If we were responsible to purchase our own, they would have a uniform order about helmets. Which brand, color, accessories, etc but they don’t…….you do get a uniform check and a top notch helmet is probably less than 200 bucks.
Use your uniform allowance to buy a new one instead of using it on a vacation
If I was still working I would spring for one of those mil spec Kevlar helmets and rattle can it to look issue. They have face shields for them.
You only have one head.
The approaching shitshow will be packed full of opportunities for both our native and invading shitstains for a wide variety of shitstain skullduggeries.
Riots as cover for lootings.
Even greater absence of availible officers for patroling neighborhoods, responding to calls, etc.
The now regularly targeted areas where the smug and stupid reside will receive an increased quantity of shitstain tlc.
The possibilty of a false flag event cannot be taken lightly.

When the city can't or won't give proper protective gear, it might be time to find a new police department. A helmet is basic equipment. Stay safe CPD, and please, don't get in the way of protesters and politicians in the coming convention, just let them right in....
The DNC is a federal election related event. Let federal law enforcement secure the event. The feds will be in charge anyway. In their efforts to protect Potato Head and the Hooker, Secret Service will arrive with their own set of protocols.
What good comes to a city from hosting this event? It will not be a sales tax generator. What stores that still exist (not boarded up)will barely be accessible as bridges will certainly be raised. Any commerce that does take place will be “self serve” (that’s polite for stolen”. Ergo, no sales taxes. Citizens working downtown will be at extreme risk while working and commuting to and from work. Already thinned out first responder staffing will be stretched even thinner. That leaves citizens at all stretches of the city at even greater risk.
The only upside to playing host is a very brief uptick in the census of downtown hotels. This does not serve the city…it only serves porky pig and his other pig pen mates feeding at the trough.
Any effort by CPD to perform actual police work will likely find monumental criticism by the visiting feds, followed by renewed efforts to continue and even more closely monitor/sanction members of CPD.
Blue Flu is actually the safest course of action for members of the CPD.

Glad I’m having a medical procedure done that month because I don’t trust any of these officers with watching my back. The department is truly a joke and DEI has reared its ugly head with these new hires. Enjoy kids, I’ll be thinking of you when I’m floating in the pool sipping on some wiskey as the city burns.

Medical insurance is expensive, if you leave before 55 yoa (even if you max out your pension 29 and a day) you do not get any medical insurance from the city, you have to pay for it on your own until medicare kicks in at 65yoa. for just my wife and i the monthly cost i was quoted was anywhere from 1200 to1800 a month, it depends on what state you live in, Florida was expensive. Why would someone want to work somewhere else until 65 just so you have medical insurance when you never have to work again if you stay another 4-5 years to 55.

I was issued my helmet in 1991. The last time they did anything for our helmets was before NATO, they had a couple officers from each District trained on how to replace the old plastic shields with new visors. All new hires buy their own helmets, so I'm sure the City is getting away from a new "first issue" by saying they gave us one, and the new kids buy theirs, so they're washing their hands of having to buy us another newer one.
Was at ffo training. Lots of pre retirees. 2-3 years out. But the young guys looked clueless. They are told to turn around. They looked at the instructor like a deer in headlights. Supervisors are definitely merit or now how to read not lead. 1-2 of the Sgt’s look like leaders. The 10 others were dumb as rocks

Down there let it slip that all our responses DNC related have to be run past the OIG because of the consent decree, and the OIG already isn't a fan of some of the things being taught. The instructors are kids, they had the outside firm that was hired from Texas. Those guys were educated, older coppers that have experience unlike the children they have trying to teach now they terminated the contract that they had in order to keep more police on the street, and then they brought in 100 more of the children to try and teach the veterans, which as we know does not work! I wonder how many of these so-called instructors are still living at mom and dad’s house in the basement getting the old warm milk and tucked in by mommy?

I max out in Jan 25 and after a meet with the pension board I learned there is a difference between pension payouts of 6740.00 if I go now and 7204.00 when I leave in a year. That extra $ is enough for me to stay and watch from the sidelines and then leave at 51.
Been thru 3 Bulls events, a few war protests, TABD, NATO, McDonald and “The Summer of Love”. All were done on the front line while being on Tact, “Goon Squad” or on bikes. I have done my share of events and now it is time for you youngsters to step up.
A word of advice, your job and freedom are more important than protecting a building or street. I have a feeling this event will bring a different type of protester, one that will bring more violence than we have seen previous. Training by a bunch of kids who are clueless, short time otj, had an "instructor" who relished his dui writing career,he worked in 004 and all the coppers called him anytime they had a DUI for advice, so how does that help any copper? The young kids teaching are not the best to put it mildly. Had another class with the instructors from plet the company who Larry fired to being in more connected coppers off the street the "friends and family," cpd program, the plet guys had experience unlike the children teaching now!

While I don’t doubt you been through it all, you went through it without copa, cameras and had the ability to defend yourself smacking someone upside the head without a care in the world. For all you old timers whining about why you would leave at 50, the answer is simple. Enjoy your life. If you are happy here and happy with your job then by all means stay. Some people have prepared for retirement with investment properties or maxed out deferred comp and have more than enough to retire and pay their insurance. Life is short and you don’t know how long you have left. Why would you be living in misery for a paycheck? Wouldn’t it be better to get a job even as a hobby or part time and enjoy living somewhere nice? You can’t take it with you when you die. Most chicagoans have a peasant mentality. They complain about the weather and politics and everything else but won’t do anything to fix their problem. Life doesn’t have to be so miserable and sad. It’s just like the woman in a violent domestic situation that whines and complains but doesn’t do anything about it. Same. You may never even live to 60 let alone 65, especially in this profession. Money isn’t everything.

Who cares how many years an instructor has on the job. I remember my teachers in school with the most time on the job were usually the worse ones and could give a shit about you. The younger teachers still had the desire about teaching kids. They lowered the time on the job requirement to be an instructor because no want with time wants to do it. The older guys are in units close to home and have a set routine they don't want to change. They don't want to deal fat ass cry babies that complain about being paid to sit in a classroom instead of being in an Arab liquor store scratching off lottery tickets.

I'm retired and in under five minutes found more than zero orders existed on helmets and specs. You obviously don't know how to search department directives. Plain and simple. Oh yeah, keep paying my pension.

If the helmet my personal property, why did I take a day when it was stolen out of my car? Also you have to turn the helmet in when you retire at which time they crush it and throw it out.
I retired in 2019 and they didn't ask for my helmet. A bunch of former co-workers retired in 2023. One retired a couple weeks ago. None of them were asked for their helmets either.
When I worked at ERPS we were storing a bunch of helmets sent to us from district locker audit inventories. Equipment and Supply wouldn't take them from us. They had a big box full of helmets in their office at HQ. They didn't know what to do with them.

Add 3% COLA to the $6740 and you're at $6942 today.

You might want to look again. There certainly is an order containing specifications. It even has pictures.

I have news for ya. Gas masks work as long as they are taken care of. Just like the 250K n19 masks that were expired by 4-5 years that no one wanted to store. Then miraculously, Covid struck, and suddenly, the expiration date no longer mattered, and the State came and took them back at the order of Fata$$.
If equipment is changed and required then first issue is on the city's dime.
So why haven't they (department) been applying for grants from the Fed or even purchasing military surplus helmets all these years anyway? Oh I forgot this is Chicago where fiscal responsibility is like a fantasy term.

Not a cop. Doesn't OSHA apply to the police? When I was working in industry, my employer had to provide eye and hearing protection, harnesses for working at heights, insulated gloves for working around live panels, ect. It was all them including testing and replacement.
Seems like your vest, helmet, eye protection (laser proof) would be on the CPD and not the officers.

The thing about LASER goggles is that you have to get the ones attuned to the correct wavelength of the LASER in use. Green is different than red is different than purple and so on...
Frigging china laser pointers come in very high power, not approved by anything in the USA, and will blind you if you get this wrong.
There's an old joke in optics labs: "Danger! Do Not Look at LASER with Remaining Good Eye"
Treat assholes with LASER pointers as the greivous threat that they are.
The amount of people sticking up for Mcdermott is laughable. Guy has being throwing other coppers under the bus for years. That's near UV all the way well into infrared.
Visible light is 400-700nm.

The only people who would discpline him would be the top echelon, that's why he can do that. He knows he can do it. If another copper did it(even though there are gyms in the district), they'd get all the hits from the top down. With McDermott, he has power and status, we blue shirts do not have that.

Here's some blue-green-red beam glasses with ANSI Z87.1 impact protection. I'd get the ones w/the wraparound to protect against beams getting in from the sides.
