But I do plan to have the conversation about racial disparities. I think the narrative that I’m gonna put a lot of effort into is balance. Not necessarily taking away the tools from law enforcement to make traffic stops, which I get it, the current language is doing that. But the narrative that I would like folks to know is that you don’t want to take away tools for law enforcement to make traffic stops, but at the same time, what is the approach and interventions that law enforcement can make that t least acknowledge racial disparities, and fairness and equity as it relates to these traffic and pedestrian stops.
So, my energy and my efforts, to your question, is to generate the discussion. Now, out of respect for law enforcement, out of respect for law-abiding citizens, it was not my intention to get this reaction. But I certainly understand it because of the broadness of what was reflected in the language.
Looks like we'll have to buy that plate sticker after all.

Best way to change the "disparity" in traffic stops is to stop putting more and more officers in black and brown neighborhoods and start assigning officers equally among neighborhoods equally among races.
For example, ten officers in a black neighborhood should mean 10 officers in a white neighborhood, ten officers in a brown neighborhood, etc.
Now how do we address the disparity in 911 calls for services in different neighborhoods......

I have said this in ever training incident and opportunity I got. If I work in area that is 99.5% a certain race and there is nothing really viable bringing in /generating revenue or tourism (due to crime/robberies/theft and/or vandalism/destruction) then the only vehicular or pedestrian traffic you encounter is that same 99.5% race, well then. Racist or disparaging that does not make me.

In the interests of fairness and equity, I think this so-called “legislator” should go into the community and strongly encourage his constituents to register their vehicles EVERY YEAR, keep them in good running order, obey the speed limit and other traffic laws and then they won’t have to worry about getting pulled over and the vehicle being searched for guns and drugs. Sounds simple enough to me.

Well we can call it the Keep Kam Buckner out of jail law, since he caught a DUI from an improper lane usage stop.
This proposed legislation did not sound like a proposal by someone representing decent, hard-working, law-abiding constituents, but rather a proposal representing the law-breaking, underbelly, criminal element of society. There was only one group of people who would have benefitted from such legislation if passed.
This was not a conversation-starter about "unjust" traffic stops. It should start a conversation among the constituents of his district as to whom exactly does he represent.
Maybe he should have a conversation on why certain minorities are either so ignorant or morally corrupt to think that they do not have to follow the rules of civilized society?

What is more concerning it that this Representative floated this concept out there to solicit a reaction - I'm glad people are watching proposed legislation that have a public safety motivation. Slaughter and Sims are the architects of the SAFE-T Act and it is obvious that their agenda is not based on public safety but on popularity/politics.
This withdrawal is just a little speed bump in the progressive march to a socialist utopia. Next try will be in a bill like the SAFE T act passed at 4 am on the last day of a legislative session. Probably will not come in an election year.

Yesterday, ISP officers stopped a semi on I-70 for improper lane use and other minor traffic offenses. During the stop officers found of a girl suspected of being trafficked. Enforcement of minor traffic violations saves lives and empowers survivors.
Did Slaughter ever consider that it is possible more cops are assigned to black areas so it stand to reason there will be more traffic stops? Has he even considered that it is possible black people are worse drivers or less respectful of traffic laws? A study by the John Jay College in NYC stated just that.
