Closed for the Holiday?

Doesn't this make "cooling centers" pretty much a waste of money?

  • The city cited the Juneteenth holiday for closing all but one cooling center for vulnerable residents Wednesday even as temperatures are expected to exceed 90 degrees for the fourth straight day.

    “It’s extremely alarming that we are shrinking our cooling centers in the middle of a heat wave,” said state Rep. Lindsey LaPointe, who represents Chicago’s Northwest Side and advocates for the homeless and other vulnerable populations.

    This week, the city established six cooling centers for those who need to escape the dangerous temperatures because they don’t have air conditioning and are susceptible to heat-induced illness. On Wednesday, only one of those centers, the Garfield Community Service Center at 10 S. Kedzie Ave., will be open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. despite another forecast for an extremely hot day.

    City officials have also advised people to seek shelter at Chicago’s more than 80 public libraries this week, but all those locations will be closed for the day as well.

Typical Chicago government. Hope no one died.

Cooling center:

* Bathtub with cool water in it...
* Under a viaduct
* In the park under a tree
* At the lake, in the water somehow
* Fire Hydrant
* Backyard sprinkler

Forget this "cooling center" bullshit - because from there it's a short hop to "free air conditioners", then "free central air"...

Why does the entire country celebrate a Texas holiday? If we're all so eager to celebrate the end of slavery in America then why don't we celebrate January 1st, which, in 1863, is when the emancipation proclamation took effect?

Too bad the libraries were closed. The hot weather getting to you, also OD'ing on opioids? Cool off and get a NARCAN treatment at your neighborhood CPL, one-stop shopping!

Along with that if you get put in the hospital here this can happen:
Patients at Ascension hospital network given dangerous doses of narcotics after disastrous cyberattack

*so if the hospital didn’t kill you with Covid ventilators they still have a chance to do the killing! Then they can say you died of natural causes!

There is this thing called Lake Michigan.

Cool breezes, even cooler waters, why, one could both launder the clothes they are wearing and cool off nicely.

I'm curious how many people actually use those cooling centers to begin with.

Chicago officials will probably give illegal aliens new Lexus vehicles with AC so they feel welcomed in the city. Meanwhile, get the refrigerated trucks ready for the commoners.

Hey, don't let a paid day off get in the way of providing life support to the needy. Wonder how big the pensions will be for these government workers....

Historically with the beginning of old man Daley to the present-day moron mayor, Democratic administrations have run the city. They have consistently, aggressively and continually shoveled shit down the Community's mouth. The Community has willingly devoured their administrative shit for decades and keep voting for Democratics. If your kids can't read, write or do math thank a Democrat and the CTU. And give yourself a pat on the back because you like to eat Democratic shit too.

I love it that Democrats used a made-up "holiday" for blacks as a reason to close cooling centers used almost exclusively by blacks. At what point do blacks realize that Democrats aren't their friends?

Juneteenth? Probably the only holiday that actually celebrates Ignorance! Err ahh slavery is gone? No shit? Well Ill be damned, gone? Really. I wonder why none of our Democrat owners didn't tell us about it. Over 400,000 Union (Republican) boys died to free us and our Democrat owners kept it a secret. I gotta me get down to the clerk's office and register to vote, as a Democrat. Ignorance!

Juneteenth, Bud Billiken, Kwanza, just what is real about all of these. It is made up like Santa Claus and the easter bunny. We don’t need anymore Hallmark holidays, nor do we need to federalize them. Insanity, Idiocracy here we come.

I lived in North Carolina with no A/C for four years. Somehow, I survived.

How did people survive at all in the past without these cooling centers? The 1900s, up to and through 1999, people must have really suffered.

There was no a/c in the house back then, nor was there a/c in Illinois going back to, say at least 300 years. You didn't whine. You adapted and overcame.

This is just the politicization of weather, another way of detracting from the real issues affecting us.

That’s really funny. Cooling centers closed because of a fake holiday.

Growing up, our house never had central air, we had a window unit in the family room, thats it, somehow we managed to survive. My mother grew up in Englewood in the 30’s-40’s and said as a kid, on really hot nights they would camp out and sleep in the parkway of Garfield Boulevard, during the day they’d take the streetcar to the lakefront to cool off. I wonder what has changed?
